A young NYC folkstress: Maggie Rogers releases sophomore album ‘Blood Ballet’
With the release of her sophomore full-length album “Blood Ballet,” 20 year old singer/songwriter Maggie Rogers crafts an impeccable collection of folk songs that convey an elementary charm. Opening track “Resonant Body” is built around banjo accompaniment, giving it an Americana feel that takes us back to Neil Young’s more rural tracks. Her voice is seductive, drawing the listener into a world of lyrical imagery with a clear gentle delivery. “James” takes the storytelling further with a three-quarter time waltz progression and heartfelt sentiment. “Drift” adds synth strings and soft percussion to the mix, underscoring strong-yet-tender vocals. Contemporary artists like The Pierces, Wilsen and Courtney Barnett all come to mind as kindred souls. – Dave Cromwell
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
From the NYC submissions: funk-soul collective King Holiday plays Baby’s All Right on 07.18
In a city that moves as fast as ours, it’s nice to know there’s musicians out there like King Holiday that are able to show us how important it is to not forget the simple things in life: like breathing for instance. With a near-mystical blend of astro-soul and funk groove, the Bedstuy, Brooklyn 10-piece construct soaring melodies in tracks like ‘Dub of Love’ and ‘Breathe’ that bring home an aura of peace and nostalgia that ties together disparate influences with a tightly wound bow. Hear blazing track ‘Breathe’ below and see the band when they play at Baby’s All Right on Friday, July 18th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Stream: Wunder Wunder, “Midnight Hours”
Australian duo Wunder Wunder made their 8,000 mile trek to Los Angeles after being seduced by this city’s sun-drenched landscape, which they romantically describe having “continuous unspoiltskies, pastel sunsets, and backdrop of palm trees.” Producers Aaron Shanahan and Bejamin Platt sure try to replicate our balmy ambiance on their latest single “Midnight Hours”, a sauntering mid-tempo number with arpeggiated guitars and luminous synth patterns that could just replenish this drought-filled summer. This is the first single off their upcoming full-length Everything Infinite, which will be released on July 15 via Dovecote Records. And make sure to catch them opening up for Cymbals at The Echo on July 22.

I’m an Island, “Crown Jewel Pt. 2”
I’m an Island just released their debut EP "Crown Jewel" July 1st. The collected works of mastermind J. Gardner are absolutely season-appropriate; much of the lazy guitar across these 4 songs is a pretty good approximation of how wobbly and distorted the boom box on the dock sounds as you’re surfacing from a running dive off of it. Especially endearing is "Crown Jewel Pt. 2." The pendulum swings a little more towards Vampire Weekend than Will Oldham on this track, but both elements remain present, as they do for the duration of the EP. Gardner has hit upon a distinct vibe, and it is going to be a pleasure to hear more from I’m an Island (especially in the dead of winter.) Check out the whole EP here. -Terra James-Jura
The Verner Pantons, Lunch and Jollapin Jasper at Rontoms
Resurrection Records is showcasing three of their forthcoming VIBs at a FREE show this Sunday July 6 at Rontoms. And get this: the first 20 people on the patio get a free Resurrection release.
As if you need more convincing, the actual bands performing will ensure the quality of the night. We got The Verner Pantons, a 60s influenced bubble-gum psych pop outfit whose jangly, candy-sweet guitar hooks will get your feet tapping and heart swelling. They keep their The Byrds influence on their sleeves and aren’t above a G-C-D chord progression, but I’ll be gosh danged if they don’t seamlessly slip into the pocket and add a spunky flair of their own to boot. Lunch are one of the premiere Portland post-punk bands, venturing into darker sounding, hard-edged musical stylings. Their driving Wipers and deathrock influenced brand of punk will get you out of your seat, wired and ready to shake your head around. Jollapin Jasper are another garage-psych band conducive to The Verner Pantons’s sound, but a little heavier on the psych aspect. Where The VPs funnel their creativity into sunshiney melodies, Jollapin Jasper channels their energy into fashioning more spacey hooks akin to Au Dunes or Still Caves.

Botanist Releases New Song – Callistemon
San Francisco based underground experimental black metal band, Botanist has released a new track from their upcoming album, VI: Flora LP. We like strange music, and Botanist creates mathy, experimental black metal for the music connoisseur.
The new track, Callistemon is pretty trippy and apologetically ambient. With rich screamo vocals, this off kilter metal band creates a chilling atmospheric vortex of a unique combination of soundscapes that are probably under appreciated, particularity by traditional metal enthusiasts. Nonetheless, the music is interesting if anything. We recommend you check out what Botanist is doing, especially if you’re looking for something new as a listener. -je
The Homophones & Hello Shark Opening for Attic Abasement at The Elemental Hazzard July 6
The brand new DIY music space, The Emerald Hazzard, debuts tonight with a show from Magic Death Sounds’ summer event series and Philadelphia Bike Rescue that’s headlined by Rochester, NY’s Attic Abasement. And it will be supported by a couple of local Deli favorites. It’s been a while since we’ve last seen Jason Ferraro and the rest of The Homophones dancing around on a stage, while playing their happily manic musings. But their long hiatus has been largely in part due to the band working on new material so we may be treated to new treats among classics like “Mala Strana” and “Polish Thuggz.” Ever since they transplanted from Vermont, Hello Shark have been really impressing us with their quirky lyrics and oddly beautiful songs that resonate from their albums HS and Break Arms. And they’re sure to be a welcomed addition to this intimate house show. The Emerald Hazzard, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8 PM, $5 All Ages – Bill McThrill
