Blue Skies for Black Hearts Release Self Titled Album

Posted on:

Blue Skies For Black Hearts began as a solo project of Pat Kearns over a decade ago, but has evolved into a Portland mainstay and touring band with five members and six albums. Throughout the band’s career, they have intertwined sounds of 50’s rhythms and jaunty 70’s folk rock, as well as  alternative rock that sprung from the 90’s. It’s been three years since 2011’s  Embracing The Modern Age, and BSFBH hasn’t strayed far from their base of fuzzy, filtered, multi-generational sound on their latest self-titled album.  It’s a seasoned group, and they have footing in a progressive form of easy-going classic rock, however it is more complex with the band’s rounded out line-up.

To self title the album seems befitting. It’s a sunny blend of guitar play between rhythm and lead ("Gone On Too Long"), and anthems focused on release ("Keep On Keepin On"). But Pat Kearns’s songwriting is beautifully keen and cool, with ever-clear vocal delivery. "Waiting To Run" has harmonics and crashing cymbals to eradicate self-destruction on a  beautiful day.  "Nothing Came In The Mail" delves into vague existence and soldiers charging compounds; like all of the songs it is embellished with a melodic solo, in this case the bands addition of keyboardist Mark Breitenbach. The last three songs play to the romantic ear:  "Don’t Look Back" is sexy funk and choruses, and is followed by "Love Scenes", which sings of longing and inspiration with the sweetest of guitar chords. "Back Home" is about getting back to that special someone with psychedelic undertones.

Blue Skies For Black Hearts play their album release with Spirit Lake at Doug Fir Lounge on Wednesday night, 7/9. For optimal listening pleasure, make sure to grab a copy of their beautiful new black and blue vinyl. Check out the video for the album’s lead single "It’s Gone On Too Long" below.

NYC popstress Catey Shaw, who received a fair amount of attention in 2013 for this single and video (which conquered none other than Perez Hilton’s ears), just announced the release of a new EP entitled "Brooklyn," scheduled for September, and took the opportunity to unveil a track from it entitled ‘Revolution’ (streaming). But that’s not it because on July 15 she will disclose the single and video for ‘Brooklyn Girls’ and then play a free show at Baby’s All Right on 07.17. It promises to be a colorful night.

Video: The Canyon Rays, “The Sunshine Growers”

Posted on:

As an east coaster by-way-of the west coast by-way-of the east coast (it’s a been a lot of there and back if you know what I mean), I whole-heartedly welcomed the sunny vibes that The Canyon Rays so expertly delivered upon my first listen. The band fits in perfectly with the sunshine pop aesthetic, so naturally pioneered by bands like The Turtles and The Beach Boys. I can’t help but think of this band as an amped up west coast version of Real Estate whose music may be a bit mellower but share similar song structures. The Canyon Rays expel positive vibes to no end, combined with uplifting back up vocals and just the right amount of synth to add a tinge of dream-pop into the mix. The Canyon Rays recently released a music video for their self-explanatory song "The Sunshine Growers" which you can watch below; three minutes and sixteen seconds of nothing but happiness, posy-vibes and you guessed it…sunshine. – Jake Saunders

Gross Relations release new EP “Wasted Time”

Posted on:

There’s nothing generically slacker rock (or generically post rock, for that matter) about Gross Relations’ new EP, “Wasted Time,” released June 25th, which showcases the band’s best songs and production to date. If one were to cut any of the four songs in half, you’d have a perfect example of one genre or the other, but together, their futuristic synth-wave keyboards throw simple, catchy bar chord licks, and muffed, reverb-heavy vocals create a cool break from convention, and a nice trip back in time. Neither side of the project is overdone to become self-evident. Just when you think a song is going to be wholly one, the other injects itself seamlessly, all complimented by a heartfelt vocal harmonizing that acts as an added layer of reverb or fuzz. Check out title-track "Wasted Time" below. – JP Basileo

From the NYC submissions: Walrus Ghost’s instrumental soundscapes

Posted on:

For Brooklyn-based sound sculptor Walrus Ghost, everything is fair game. Tracks like ‘Bent’ and ‘Seventwentyone’ take crashing waves and chilling voices caught in suspended animation, re-making them as aural landscapes dense as a rainforest. Latest record ‘uplifting themes for the naysayer’ takes some of the picturesque destinations you can find on Walrus Ghost’s Instagram, and juxtaposes these journeys together in ways a camera could never capture. Listen to the haunting ‘PCM126’ below and make sure to wear a good pair of hiking boots along with a great pair of headphones. Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

MantraMantraMantra, “World on Fire”

Posted on:

While Mantra Mantra Mantra may be out of commission for the rest of the summer as guitarist Greg Dorris heads out on tour with another project, they left us with this single as a holdover. "World on Fire" has enough depth to fortify us through at least some of the dog days. It pushes into experimental electronica territory with an aesthetic anchor (read as: they get a little weird but keep it right pretty.) There’s plenty to chew on in the span of five minutes; the track is a series of ascents and lulls, with the intensity backing off a little only to make the next wave more powerful, and the saxophone jamming out for the whole thing keeps a thread of consistency while amplifiying the awesomeness. Keep an eye out for their next wave of shows here, and dig into the rest of their releases here. -Terra James-Jura

Noisy NYC bands to check out: Bueno at Death By Audio + The Silent Barn

Posted on:

When the name of the game is improvisation there’s a special connection that occurs between musicians who are truly listening to each other; a non-verbal communication ruled by the harmonic environment which they create for themselves. A connection that’s not hard to miss when the musical decisions made by the band are completely intentional, and even more so when they are indeed listening to each other.  Bueno, a five piece band from Staten Island we had the pleasure to see at a Deli issue launch party last winter, has that connection, something distinctly present in the live recordings that they have sprinkled all over the web.  Their music is mostly improvised, with song structures based and existing loosely within a post-punk influence (Talking Heads, Parquet Courts, The Bad Hand to name a few), but Bueno implements much more than that, ranging from jazz fusion, to blues, indie rock and funk in one tight and neatly packaged experiment.  The inclusion of the saxophone combined with Luke Chiaruttini’s drawling vocals (which sound like a perfect cross between Lou Reed, Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts and Matt Schultz of Cage the Elephant) only adds to the odd assortment of elements that enter the Bueno vibes.  You can see them live on July 10th at Death By Audio as well as on July 22nd at The Silent Barn.  – Jake Saunders
