New Music Video: “Blue Moon” – The Extraordinaires

Posted on:

With The Extraordinaires, every release feels like an art project. And with the new music video for their single, "Blue Moon," off the band’s forthcoming album Dress for Nasty Weather, you find the group tramp-ishly bonding together, creating something that is all at once so heartwarmingly beautiful, strange and romantically timeless. The fellas outdid themselves on this one. It premiered yesterday over at The Key. The Extraordinaires will be celebrating the release of their new record this Saturday at Johnny Brenda’s with Grandchildren and Teen Men.

Recommended Show: Bee vs. Moth with Muchos Backflips at Holy Mountain

Posted on:

Bee vs. Moth is a band that will surprise you, unless you know many bands that effectively switch from funk jams or latin-jazz influenced melodies to distorted hardcore noise-rock in a heartbeat, and our guess is you don’t.  To be completely honest, their bandcamp description sums up the sound kind of perfectly: "The band has one foot in the world of jazz improvisation and the other firmly planted on a distortion pedal."  The improvisation is present, and the intentions executed from an incredible range of influences while completely resisting categorization. With two releases as well as a few movie scores under their belt, Bee vs. Moth is gearing up for their third studio release due out in August.  You can catch them tonight with Muchos Backflips and Cosms at Holy Mountain.  Stream a demo for their new album below. -Jake Saunders

Music Video Premiere: Mark Nelsen – Homeward

Posted on:

We promised that we would premiere local singer/songwriter extraordinaire, Mark Nelsen’s new music video this week, and now we are fulfilling that promise.

The title track from Nelsen’s new solo album, Homeward has been morphed into a beautiful live action music video, and the film is just as impressive as the music. With a ‘50s era art nouveau mystique, and hazy intergalactic touches, this video brings a new perspective on psych music and experimental local rock and roll. Mark Nelsen has a unique artistic vision for this new album, and we think his creative ideas and productions should be praised.

If you missed his album release show at the Vortex Room last weekend, you can catch his full live band, Mark Nelsen Band at the Down Dirty Shake residency at Milk Bar tomorrow night. You won’t regret checking out his band, and indulging in the strange outer space experience he has created around his new album Homeward. –je

Free Salamander Exhibit Plays Bottom of the Hill – 7/30

Posted on:

Oakland based art-progressive metal band, Free Salamander Exhibit is playing live at Bottom of the Hill with Drag City Records band, Dead Rider on July 30th. This show will kick off a brief tour the band will be embarking on. This mysteriously heavy and eerie band has yet to release a recording.

FSE employs clout from their defunct music project, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and is slowly moving their way through becoming an emerging, recording local band in their own right. We encourage you to take a chance on a band you’ve never heard before. That is the fun of being a part of the local underground scene. You can hear a little of this, and a little of that, and hopefully become pleasantly surprised as you wade through the array of different genres and artists who perform in the Bay Area. Check out Free Salamander Exhibit and tell your friends how the show was. Word of mouth is a great way to get the scene excited!

Busses & Rosu Lup Opening for Avers at JB’s July 8

Posted on:

Variability – the trio of Busses engages the sonic experimentation with an ear pointed toward the openness it provides, performing songs that stretch the end lines while the core instrumentation remains locked-in pushing fluidly forward. Their latest single “Overload” takes that core groove coupling it with Dave Brett’s gentle, floating vocal arrangement, creating a subtle, drifting out-to-sea effect. However, the group has been known to harbor a heavier harder aesthetic. Tonight, at Johnny Brenda’s, they bridge the gap between harmonious local folk group Rosu Lup, who take that zoomed in intimacy and project it outward, exuding a natural warmth. Having gone through a pair of lineup changes, Rosu Lup is currently working on a full-length LP, which may be available this coming fall. Their performance should offer a preview of that new material. The show is alo headlined by Richmond, Virginia garage-pop/psych rockers Avers, who released their debut album Empty Light earlier this spring. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita
