Rachel Pearl, “Dodgeball”

Posted on:

The Deli caught wind of Rachel Pearl earlier this July at NAMM, where she charmed an afternoon crowd with her jazz-influenced pop (accompanied by Bakithi Kumalo, the bass player on Paul Simon’s "Graceland.") The fiery-haired songstress has a handle on both ends of the spectrum; she’s capable of strumming a quirky little ditty on her ukelele or belting an sparkly, auto-tuned, area-worthy piece.  The start of this month saw the release of her single "Dodgeball." While it is a freakin’ cute track, the clever language and interesting instrumentation (and the branding.  Oh, think of the branding.) reveal Pearl’s very shrewd handle on pop as an artform. The thing has more hooks than a Reno truck stop.  Pearl’s personality and inclination for pushing the envelope with beguiling results makes her an artist to keep an eye on.  Whatever she cooks up is going to be sweet.

Rachel Pearl is hosting a series of open mics at the Rutledge.  More information can be found HERE. -Terra James-Jura

Living Days are back with new single and show at Union Pool on 08.20

Posted on:

After ten years spent covering the NYC scene, here at The Deli we have the occasional nostalgic day when we like to reminisce about awesome bands from a few years ago that undeservingly disappeared from the face of the earth. Decadent and troubled looking dark pop band Living Days was ALMOST getting to that point. Back in 2010 we enjoyed their debut single so much that we booked them for our very first SXSW show. Then a few years went by without much happening. We are therefore very glad to see them (and their mysterious and charismatic front lady Stephonik Youth) back with a show scheduled for August 20 at Union Pool, sharing the stage with another one of those semi-forgotten NYC acts (Midnight Masses, more about them soon).  The band recently dropped a new single "Thrill Anybody?" (streaming) and is finalizing a new album that should see the light early in 2015.

New Beard celebrates release of ‘ My People are Around’ EP at Mercury this Saturday (08.02)

Posted on:

Self-described “weird rock” band New Beard will be kicking off the release of their new EP “My People Are Around” with a release show at Mercury Lounge this Saturday, August 2nd. Though the record is coming in at six tracks shorter than the band’s first full-length “New Beard City,” don’t be deceived by its brevity — it is tightly packed with strange vocal inflections, grungy power chords, and irony-stricken lyrics in all of the right places. While some tracks on the album verge on compositional chaos, others play out with the soft, crooning exterior of a folk song — much like the opening track, “The Weight of a Tiny Being” a quirky love song that reveals the probable origins of the band’s name: “You have changed me for the better/I grew out my facial hair for you.” Check out the video of title track My People are Around. – Jillian Dooley

Haki

Posted on:

Haki is fronted by the talented Kelsey Ashby. On their latest release, Positive, her vocals range from rhythmic screaming to hushed crooning. Through out the album she shows incredible range and energy. The band’s sound ranges from thrash metal to punk to doom and never really lets up. They are destruction and beauty rolled up into a young explosive package.

You can catch Haki at Ebenezer Lutheran Church on August 6th with Evasive Backflip, Fake Limbs, Crude Humor, and Unabomber.

New Video: “Dirty Laundry” (Live) – Cayetana

Posted on:

Cayetana‘s Augusta Koch (guitar/vocals) and Allegra Anka (bass) performed an endearing, stripped-down version of "Dirty Laundry" for the most recent Space Jam Sessions. The original appears on the trio’s upcoming LP Nervous Like Me (Tiny Engines). The full band will be headlining OK Fest this Friday at West Philly’s Golden Tea House. (Photo by Ally Newbold)

Genders + New Madrid + The Ghost Ease at Doug Fir 8.1

Posted on:

This Friday night at Doug Fir Lounge marks a homecoming show for Genders, returning from a brief West Coast tour with another of the evening’s outfits, New Madrid. Add The Ghost Ease to the mix and it’s a show not to be missed.

All-female power trio The Ghost Ease will kick the evening off with a slow, but powerful punch. Expect to be delighted with celestial vocals, thoughtful story and drums to batter away the memory of your working week. Catchy undercurrents of old school guitar riffs are complimented by vaporous melodies, and I can’t help feeling a little Tim Burton after listening to the album.

New Madrid are in town from Georgia next, and I am excited. What a joy to hear a band that not only has the basic talent and beyond, but clearly has a great skill for creating an entire sound. Their 2014 11-track album, Sunswimmer, is a feast of orchestral swells and punchy anthemic verses, delivering complex classic guitar that Chris Rea would be proud of and full harmonies to please all of you Beach Boys fans.

Genders close out the night. Their national tour last year with Built to Spill was followed by a debut album, which has caused much a flutter. Maggie Morris’s warblings are enough to make you feel… anything she wants to make you feel – an intoxicating control in a front person. With exciting syncopation experimentation, Katherine Paul’s drumming skills are wicked. A kind of New Wave sound, I cannot wait to see if it translates into live performance, and from what I am told it is irrefutable.

Quite reliably, every year Brooklyn churns out a dream pop band that makes waves in the blogosphere and beyond, and Beverly is the latest in this series. The band – which in its original inception featured Frankie Rose on drums – recently signed with local label Kanine Records (who launched Grizzly Bear, Chairlift and Surfrer Blood among others), and just released this new video for the single "Out On A Ride" (watch it below). They will be touring with break out NYC indie poppers The Drums in September and October, and play Rough Trade on August 5.

In It Together Fest!

Posted on:

It’s finally here! In It Together Fest starts tomorrow, Thursday 7/31. The first night features some of my favorite bands in the city, all on one mindblowing bill. Acme‘s indie-psyche funk, Wanted Man‘s blazing blues-rock, and Paperhaus‘ oh-so-tight indie-rock join together for a night no one who loves local music should miss at Fort Loko. The show will be opened with a comedy show (cause, in this festival, musicians are in it together with all sorts of other creative people, see?), and Vundabar (from MA) brings some of my hometown (Boston) sound to the District.

After that, it’s like 3 more days of crazy. Look at that map! There’s shows everywhere. Which ones do you choose? Which ones do I choose?? How many can we pack in to our memory-holes? I’m getting a bit stressed. I’ll tell you one thing: I am going to know the bus routes in this city so well by the end of the weekend. At the very least, there’ll be a good show near you at some point. Stop by, make a small donation and support local music! –Natan Press

A Deli NYC premiere: Katie Buchanan unveils video/single “Go” from upcoming EP

Posted on:

Singer-songwriter Katie Buchanan has just unleashed a haunting, extremely well shot crime scene-inspired video for her single “Go” that brings an element of melodrama to the already-heartbreaking track. Set to appear on her upcoming EP of the same name, the song is said to have been inspired by a toxic friendship nearing its end, and the video offers a symbolic representation of this ending in the form of death. The video is a gorgeous interpretation of a song rooted in sheer sadness, and Buchanan’s dark, blues-inspired vocals – planted effortlessly on top of hollow percussion and a sparse, steady guitar arrangement – underscore this feeling. Watch the video below. Buchanan’s forthcoming EP is set to release on August 5th. – Jillian Dooley

Avery Rosewater Opening for People Get Ready at JB’s July 30

Posted on:
It feels like it’s been a moment since we’ve come across Avery Rosewater in a live setting. The local outfit, fronted by Arches’ Julien Rossow-Greenberg, is a freewheelin’ rock ‘n’ roll band that doesn’t shy away from dreamy reverb on the vocals. They shared a digital single, “Jeff 24,” this past spring, which felt reminiscent of earlier War on Drugs tracks. Avery Rosewater will be opening tonight at Johnny Brenda’s for former Deli NYC print cover boys and girl, People Get Ready, who are particularly known for their entertaining live performances. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
