This weekend: Folk + Americana overdose at Union Hall

Posted on:

This weekend (July 11-12), roll up your sleeves for some hootin’, hollerin’ barn-burnin’ revelry – and you don’t even have to leave the city. The Great American Roots Stomp is back: a two-night Brooklyn festival showcasing eight acclaimed local bands audaciously bringing Americana roots back into the spotlight. Don’t miss it this Friday and Saturday at Park Slope’s eclectic watering hole Union Hall (while there, pick up a copy of our Ten Year Anniversary OIssue!.

Friday night features a range of high-energy performances, from bluegrass to country to jazz. Jumbo Brown (pictured and streaming) is a group of wild southern boys bringing the sounds of a back porch jam, gold rush piano parlor, and a Mardi Gras parade to the big city. Bobtown‘s compelling blend of voices and instruments move gracefully between elegy and celebration. The Melody Allegra Band‘s virtuosic instrumentals include Melody’s own fiddling, which has been featured on an episode of House of Cards. Seth Kessel & the Two Cent Band moves effortlessly from Prohibition-era swing to gypsy jazz to 1950s rock ’n’ roll without skipping a beat.

Saturday night features strong songwriting and colorful voices. Union Street Preservation Society, an irresistibly lively string band with a Cash-Carter dynamic, weaves new songs from the fabric of bluegrass, old-time and early jazz. Jan Bell & The Maybelles‘ lilting harmonies combine sounds from backroads America with a UK coal mining background; they are winner of the 2008 Independent Music Awards’ Alt. Country Album of the year. The Alex Mallett Band offers genre-jumping, banjo-driven sing-a-long songs with a strong beat and an uncanny wit. Opening the night, Sara Bouchard & the Salt Parade‘s signature salty-sweet vocals will stop you in your tracks while smart, colorful lyrics – taken from history books and other unlikely sources – will hold you hypnotized.

The Extraordinaires are all set to release their 4th full-length album Dress For Nasty Weather at Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday night, and it’s one that’s as artistic and brilliant as their previous efforts. In one way, the record is a blast from the past as it’s the first that they’ve recorded with founding member Matt Gibson since he left touring as a multi-intrumentalist for Man Man. But it’s also a whole lot of new, since it’s the first album released on their own record label (which they co-founded with Justin Wolf of Lux Perpetua), Color Theory Records, and is one that they were able to crowdsource well past their Kickstarter goal. This album will feature the same type of hardbound lyric books that The Extraordinaires popularized with their previous albums, and it also marks the band’s music video debut with their Charlie Chaplin-influenced creation for the single “Blue Moon” (below). It’s an album worthy of much celebration, and they’ll be doing so with longtime friends and West Philly orchestral pop outfit, Grandchildren, and Teen Men, which is a collaboration between visual artists and members of the Spinto Band. Psalmships Album Release Show at Bourbon & Branch July 11

Posted on:

I Sleep Alone (Big School Records), the freshly released LP from Psalmships, the Joshua Britton ghost-folk project, will be celebrated this evening at Bourbon & Branch. The record finds a balance, using lyrical depth that hits home with its unshielded poignant potency. A natural open-air atmosphere gives these earnest tales room to breathe, allowing Britton’s pensive words to resonate, burying themselves deeper in one’s mind, while sharpening their honest eeriness. It’s as though through expressing an emptiness that a catharsis occurs. The penetratingly clear rock of Downingtown’s Chelsea Sue Allen joins in on the experience with Indiana-based folk rocker Nathan Edwin rounding out the bill. Bourbon & Branch 705 N. 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

From the NYC Submissions: Exocomet’s sinister Self Titled debut

Posted on:

Exocomet is a two piece out of Brooklyn whose self-titled debut is a wash of psychedelic, post-punk reverberation.  The album has a unique ebb and flow to it, mostly existing in an atmosphere of washed out ambience. But underneath the ocean of reverb there exists traveling and aggressive melodies that carry the album quite effectively, connecting it into a sum of its parts.  Although mostly dealing with textures boredering on ambience, the album finds contrast in some of the more dense tracks such as "Cyclops", where the dissonant guitars create a rhythm parallel to the charging drums; the song structures are complex, yet rarely leave the realm of discernibility.  The lack of details about this band is peculiar yet only adds to the mysteriousness behind the album.   You can stream the album off their bandcamp. – Jake Saunders

This band submitted their music for coverage here. We added this track to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Album Review: Steep Ravine – Trampin’ On

Posted on:

Steep Ravine has been steadily refining its unique mixture of folk, gypsy jazz, and bluegrass into something both increasingly intangible and captivating at once. Known widely around the bay area for their astounding live performances, instrumental prowess, diverse musical influences, and primary compositional ingenuity of guitarist Simon Linsteadt, the band continues to operate alongside a growing fan base of young and old alike.

Their all-original debut Trampin’ On is a poignant, laid-back, and polished blend of their diverse influences. “White Mare” builds a narrative around a single image; a lover’s comment causes Linsteadt to reflect on his origins in the steady, introspective “Wooden Floors”; the melodic refrain of “Lazy Tide” calls to mind The Band’s Last Waltz theme; and mandolinist Andy O’brien’s traditional-lean shines through in his composition “No.37”. The album closes with the relaxed country breeze of “C’mon Home”, and as the agile group continues its journey, the summer ahead is brimming with shows in Washington,Oregon, Canada, Colorado, New Mexico, and California. – Justin Kohlberg

Mike Castle

Posted on:

Mike Castle has released his new EP "Everything Gold" on his souncloud page. My favorite track was featured in the trailer below and is called "Stop Playing With My Heart". It is a wonderful mixture ’60’s pop and lo-fi garage rock.

You can catch Mike Castle at The Hideout on July 19th with The Donkeys and The Sharrows.
