Recommended Show: I Am The Albatross At Empire Control Room
I Am The Albatross’ most recent and self-titled album is quite a successful interpretation of gypsey/blues rock; a sound that describes the south well, paying homage with a tasteful reimagination. The songs all contain a surly and hung-over haze, personified perfectly in "Strugglin": "Well, it’s whiskey in the morning/Gin and tonic at noon/Pulling down the blinds in a motel room." for a preview of what could only be a vivacious performance hit up the Empire Control Room & Garage tomorrow. Hop Along & Glocca Morra Opening for Owls at Union Transfer July 14
Owls return to Philly tonight for a special show at Union Transfer, and they’ll be supported by an assortment of eclectic local bands that are joining them on tour. Ever since releasing their debut full-length Get Disowned, Frances Quinlan and the rest of Hop Along have garnered much well-deserved praise, and have performed with noteworthy bands like Fucked Up, The Sidekicks, and The Thermals. The four-piece will surely be pulling out all the stops for their hometown friends and fans this evening. Glocca Morra is the kind of Philly-inspired DIY band that sends out EPs like Museum Mouth with hand-drawn paper bag art. And with their recent summer hiatus to prep for this tour while working on new material, tonight might be the perfect occasion for a preview of what the guys have instore for their next release. The DC Area Deli Presents: Cheers Elephant, The Trillions and DC’s The Jackfields on Thursday, July 17th at DC9!
The DC Area Deli Magazine is proud to present a special night at DC9, next week on Thursday, July 17th. National touring act Cheers Elephant (from LA via Philly) will be joined by their friends The Trillions (from Richmond) and The Jackfields (featuring beloved DC musicians Mike Reina and Anthony Pirog performing as a duo), for an incredible night of catchy psychedelia laced with mind-blowing guitar wizardry.
Cheers Elephant is currently on a country-wide tour that will see them opening for the likes of The Zombies ("It’s the time of the se-ea-son for looooo-ving!"), as they’re set to become the next big thing in psychedelic guitar pop. The Trillions are Richmond favorites, named on of Virginia’s top 10 bands by Paste magazine. Both Mike Reina and Anthony Pirog have absolutely ridiculous resumes, playing in numerous bands in DC, NY and beyond, including together with (Smashing Pumpkins drummer) Jimmy Chamberlain in Skysaw.
If you love fun, sun-drenched tunes, shiney, happy, guitars, and catchy, melodic, but seriously impressive musicianship, you can’t miss this show. DC9, Thursday, July 17th. 8:00 PM. $10. –Natan Press
New Video: “Little Johnny Jewel” (Television Cover) – Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band
We were very excited to learn that Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band will be releasing a new full-length album this October entitled Intensity Ghost, via No Quarter Records. The quartet is easily one of our favorite live acts lately, and you can catch them for free performing under the beautiful LED lights at Spruce Street Harbor Park on Thursday, July 24 opening for Purling Hiss. And if you’re still hungry for more of their hypnotic, exploratory jams, they’ll also be throwing down the night after (Friday, July 25) at The Boot & Saddle with Oneida and I IM EYE MY. Check out the video below of the group covering "Little Johnny Jewel" by Television, one of Forsyth’s major musical influences, at Little Berlin!
Lambchop Playing TWO Shows at The Basement 7.15
This Wednesday, infamous and prolific country rockers Lambchop with be performing their seminal 2000’s release "Nixon" at The Basement. They will, in fact, be playing it twice, as two shows (one at 7pm, the other at 9pm.) The evening is dedicated not only to the rare chance to see the group perform the album that essentially brought Lambchop an international awareness, but also to raise funds for the Mary Mancini for State Senate campaign (Mancini has been married to frontman Kurt Wagner for almost two decades.) Lauded as "America’s Most F*cked-Up Country Band," (Exhibit A: the beautifully weird track "Up With People, included below) and with no less than 14 titles in their discography, a $25 cover is a bargain. -Terra James-Jura

Following its poppy lead single “Golden,” We Were Astronauts have premiered the second single from its forthcoming Artificial Light EP. “Keep It Together” follows in the footsteps of melody-driven rock radio giants Kings of Leon, with catchy vocals and a thoughtfully pieced-together array of guitar pedals carrying the track from start to finish. Look for Artificial Light on September 9 and get your tickets to August 23’s album release party here. – Jake Reed (@jakejreed)

Katie Frank & The Pheromones and Heyward Howkins Host Roadside Graves at Bourbon & Branch July 13
From starting out as a college graduate sharing her personal compositions during open mic nights, to becoming a solid roots-rock five-piece, Katie Frank & The Pheromones have taken great strides to get where they are. And the release of their debut full-length Counting Your Curses over the winter has helped them tour to SXSW, and get ready to make their Philadelphia Folk Festival debut next month. Before they play the fest, they’ll be making their Bourbon & Branch debut tonight, where they’ll be joined by fellow BITBY labelmate, Heyward Howkins. This will be Howkins’ last show for a bit as he’ll be stepping away from the stage to record new material. So it’s a good reason to attend and see if he reveals any new morsels like the unreleased song "Everybody’s Waiting" from their recent Folkadelphia session. They’ll be hosting Metuchen, New Jersey Americana outfit Roadside Graves. Bourbon & Branch, 705 N 2nd St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill
People The Kangaroo drops great hits on “Greatest Hits Vol. 3”
People The Kangaroo’s Greatest Hits Vol. 3 is not a greatest hits collection at all – rather, it’s the band’s first EP, following last year’s single “We Can Still Say I Love You.” The album starts with a swelling synth and a spoken word sample, a brief detour from the music that follows. First up is the poppy “Blue Filter (Clicking Clicking),” a fair example of the band’s knack for a good hook and Pablo San Martin’s slick production, but “Time is Running Faster” is even better. With extraterrestrial backing vocals, synth and guitar riffs that twist and turn around one another and drums big enough to fill a stadium, the EP’s second track is also its focal point. Next, “Hit You” careens on the line between cheery and dissonant, fitting its creepy lyric – “I’m in the back seat, I’m gonna hit you if I can,” vocalist Alan Wurman sings. Grab Greatest Hits Vol. 3 for free on Bandcamp now and see the guys play it live at T.T the Bear’s in Cambridge on July 23. – Jake Reed (@jakejreed)
Trans Van Santos Little Tybee Brass Magic and Merrimack Play Amnesia – 7/13
The transient San Francisco psych folk staple, Mark Matos is playing his first show in San Francisco since his moving performance with Mark Matos and Os Beach at the Rickshaw Stop earlier this year. Matos has reemerged to play Amnesia with his new musical outfit, Trans Van Santos tomorrow night.
The popular Atlanta based experimental folk band, Little Tybee along with Bay Area based Brass Magic and Merrimack will complete the bill for this night of experimental and moody folk rock.
This is going to be another great night at Amnesia, so make sure you support the return of Mark Matos, and a lineup that will cloud the club with nostalgic and illuminating folk experimental sounds.
