Recommended Show: Clouder at The Flat, July 18th

Posted on:

If you’re looking forward to fireworks this year, Clouder has got you covered. The sinister rockabilly of the group’s latest single "Phantom Girl" should put a firecracker under your butt and shoot you straight off to the moon. The track launches immediately with a rattlesnake guitar snarl followed by a screaming hook where singer Eric Gilstrap calls you a ‘little girl’ repeatedly (it’s a lot more fun than you’d think). The band’s never been shy, but this new song rips things to shreds. It’s a monster of a track, and delivers the proto-punk sledgehammer action found throughout the band’s sophomore album ‘Sister Raygun’ (Fleeting Youth Records). Hear ‘Phantom Girl’ below and see the band when they play Fort Useless–SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE FLAT)–on July 18th. -Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Album review: Fake Fancy – New People (EP)

Posted on:

Self-described as “a boy and a girl that met over their mutual love for hardcore evangelical conservative beliefs and tequila shots,” an admittedly tongue-buried-firmly-in-cheek wry ironic smile weaves itself in and out of the tracks that make up the new EP from Fake Fancy, entitled New People.

At its core, this is two-person, boy-meets-girl lo-fi garage pop, reminiscent of Kansas City area darlings Schwervon!, only featuring a much more prevalent electronic edge. The lazy comparisons of The Black Keys or The White Stripes could certainly be applicable as well, but there is a deeper range of tone and darkness that deserves being mentioned here. A real separation from those two aforementioned duos comes from the wholesome balance established between the melancholy David Byrne vocal stylings of John Elijah against the more pure and sunshiny Sheryl Crow sound of Katie Vah. Coupled with the witty and elevated lyrical prowess, Fake Fancy rises above being “just another two-piece indie rock band.”

The EP has a multiple personality disorder in the best of ways, featuring a stirring amount of variance amongst six songs that come in at a total of eleven minutes. The sweet afternoon breeze strains of “If A Man Made A Machine” and “Summer Hours” provide trancelike respites from the more avant-garde, chaotic moments in “I Have A Drum Machine” and “Mild Violence.” “We Hold Hands” and “Aqua Teen” show Fake Fancy at its best, with head-bobbing beats, tight harmonies, and accessible yet charmingly odd instrumentation firing on all cylinders.

Overall, this is a tidy little slice of pop music. With a sonic landscape that effortlessly bounces from Downy fresh to the kind of sticky grime you find in an old broken down engine block, Fake Fancy makes no efforts to pigeon hole itself into one kind of sound.

–Zach Hodson

Zach Hodson is a monster. He once stole a grilled cheese sandwich from a 4-year-old girl at her birthday party. He will only juggle if you pay him. I hear he punched Slimer right in his fat, green face. He knows the secrets to free energy, but refuses to release them until Saved by the Bell: Fortysomethings begins production. He is also in Dolls on FireDrew Black & Dirty Electric, and Riot Riot Riot, as well as contributing to various other Kansas City-based music, comedy, and art projects.

Fake Fancy will be on KKFI 90.1 FM tonight, on High Voltage Rock N’ Roll Radio Show to release the album at midnight. The band will be playing at Jackpot Music Hall on Thursday, July 31, with 2twenty2, Little Time Off, and Onward to Glory!. Check them out.

Muffassa Kicks off West Coast tour at Kelly’s Olympian 7.17

Posted on:

I like shows with an entirely local lineup. Especially when the bands all bring different elements of the scene. The bill at Kelly’s Olympian this Thursday (7.17) is a perfect example of just how much talent Portland has to offer.

Fre$h Hair will kick off the evening with a certain mischief. This duo manages to glorify day to day heartache and experience with charming harmonic frivolity. Whilst their lyrics may seem typical of two young women trying to smoke their way through things, they bring authority in their writing and in doing so, a truly beautiful modern folk sound.

Up next is Ladywolf with their rhythmic jolt of lo fi psychedelic rock. Listening to Ladywolf is like being transported to a place I’ve never been. Mainly New York in the late seventies. I feel like I’m in a dirty nightclub and I’m 21 again. In a glorious way.

The Handles bring a heartache of lap steel country drawl with great, laid back capability. Their choruses play with melodies that will have you singing along even if you only pick up half of the words. "My love is a bottle, and you are the reason". It’s that kind of sadness that makes you feel right at home.

Mufassa will close out the night before hitting the road the following morning to embark on a West Coast tour. If The Beatles, T Rex and Black Sabbath had a baby – spunky and confident, these boys definitely know how to pack a punch with songs like "Johnny," but can also draw you back in with the thoughtful storytelling in tracks like "Women." This evening will be quite the ride.

Stream the First Single Off Celestial Shore’s Forthcoming Album

Posted on:

Celestial Shore, Brooklyn’s masters of syncopation and tempo changes who graced the cover of The Deli’s 2013 Summer Issue, are out with another monster of a song, entitled ‘Gloria’. We must say we’re quite surprised by this new single for a couple reasons: 1. It’s a little more straight forward than most tracks by the trio, which is actually good – we even hear a bit of a Pixies influence! 2. The entire song doesn’t seem to feature any odd time signatures – although (for the math rock nerds) there’s plenty of switching between 4 quarters and 6 quarters. Dissecting Celestial Shore’s songs is only part of the fun, because their melodies are something bordering on heavenly, and this track’s graceful regression to simplicity allows for a full appreciacion of the actual song.  This tune, together with new material they performed at our recent NYC B.E.A.F. show, has amped us up for their sophomore full-length, ‘Enter Ghost,’ to be released this October.  You have a couple chances to see Celestial Shore this week, one at the Landlady release show tonight at Baby’s All Right, and again this Sunday at the secret house show which is part of the 1.21 Gigawatts Festival (the catch is that you need to have a full weekend pass to go this show, but it’ll be worth it). – Jake Saunders

LODRO tours US + readies debut album release

Posted on:

In what seems to be an age dominated by 90’s throwback guitar bands, there aren’t many acts around right now quiet like LODRO. Fronted by Jeremy Cox (formerly of Royal Baths) and Lesley Hann (formerly of Friends), these self-described “neo-noir punks” have deeper routes with The 13th Floor Elevator and Nick Cave’s Birthday Party than, say, Nirvana. In an exclusive interview with The Deli, we caught up with Jeremy – apparently after the summer tour there’s a full length ready to be released.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Psych Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

From the NYC Submissions: The Ghost of Arthur James

Posted on:

Folk gospel group The Ghost of Arthur James has a knack for finding the spiritual blessing hidden among all our earthly travels. The group’s debut record ‘Small Target’ highlights this journey: punctuated by revelations discovered during trips through America’s heartland (‘Highway Blues’), and the spiritual revelations these have brought to bear (‘All Across This Land’). Like all our spiritual horizons, the landscape the group finds is rugged and untamed, but The Ghost of Arthur James finds the beauty in it all. Check out a live performance of ‘Highway Blues’ from Braund Sound Studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Fight Amp Packing a Thunderous Punch at KFN July 15

Posted on:

The power trio of Fight Amp is set to charge the stage this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. The group recently announced that they will be heading into the studio next month to record their next EP, which will be released via Brutal Panda Records at some point early next year. Fight Amp systematically constructs walls of intense menacing sound developing an atmosphere that can stew gradually, enveloping the room or quickly hitting hard and fast like last night’s storm. With either attacking style at their disposal and an unrelenting instrumental mentality, the results provide a thunderous, effective punch. Joining in on this heavy noise-rocking spectacle will be a pair of Brutal Panda groups, locals Ladder Devils and San Francisco’s Kowloon Walled City. The bill also features Baltimore’s Roomrunner whose brand of rock inhabits a slight up-tempo pop element. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7pm, $8 – $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
