New Japanese Breakfast Cassette Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Little Big League‘s Michelle Zauner introduced us to her lo-fi solo bedroom project, Japanese Breakfast, last summer by sharing June, an ambitious attempt at writing and recording a song a day for a month. She continued with this creative outlet earlier this summer by recording seven more songs as part of a blog with Eskimeaux, Florist, Frankie Cosmos and Small Wonder, which encouraged her to be "really open and honest" about her feelings. She eventually released the collection of tracks as an EP Where Is My Great Big Feeling? that will be available on cassette, along with her latest eight-song album entitled American Sound, via Seagreen Records. You can stream and download the project’s first label release in its entirety below.

The Deli Portland’s Guide to PDX POP NOW! 2014

Posted on:
Three days, outdoor and indoor stages, tons of rad local music…even room to park your bike. The annual PDX Pop Now! fest takes place July 18th through the 20th at 226 SE Madison St, Portland, OR 97214 (underneath the Hawthorne Bridge). As always the festival is free and totally all ages.

PDX Pop Now!, Portland’s rock and roll non-profit has one mission; to “stimulate and expand participation in the Portland music scene” – an admirable cause to say the least, considering all the hard work this organization has done to support local art. From its early days as a listserv for Portland music lovers in 1998, PDX Pop Now! has grown into an “all-volunteer organization committed to…provid[ing] and support[ing] live performances and recorded materials.”

Overwhelmed by all the stellar bands? Here are some of our recomendations of what not to miss:

BARRA BROWN QUINTET: Friday 18th, Outdoor Stage, 6pm
Brown, a Lewis & Clark College alum, has been making all sorts of waves in the Portland music scene – particularly in the jazz community. He’s been composing some killer, adventurous tunes that blend his eclectic taste in music. For instance, if it weren’t for the styling of trumpeter Tom Barber along with Brown’s polyrhythmic metric play, the song, “How the West was Won” could easily pass as an upbeat instrumental pop tune.

BROWNISH BLACK: Saturday 19th, Outdoor Stage, 1:30pm
Three cheers for neo-soul! Brownish Black started when front-person M.D. Sharbatz moved here from Detroit. Raised on a steady diet of Motown, punk and metal, Sharbatz attempts to blend all three sensibilities into this project, cultivating the lo-fi, “jagged” Stax soul sound with a “hard-edged beat to it.” Get ready to break out your tambourine.

SOUVENIR DRIVER: Sunday 20th, Outdoor Stage, 4:15pm
Souvenir Driver have been touring material from their recent LP, Living Water. Self-dubbed as “bliss pop” the band’s list of genre influences is myriad, toting post-punk, psych, shoegaze, and even goth. “Kiss You Close” and “Feel the Flood” combine heavy bass with echo-heavy kick-snare and vocals like a sedated Joe Strummer to produce a slick, sinister new wave sound.

Also check out:
ALAMEDA: Sunday 20th, Outdoor Stage, 2:15pm
Alameda‘s pristine folk pop will cradle you until nothing hurts.

COMA SERFS: Sunday 20th, Outdoor Stage, 6:15pm
With their jagged, garage rock, Coma Serfs will basically tear down all that sweet healing you got from just watching Alameda…but in the best way possible.

Local all-female pop-punk trio Cayetana continues to gain momentum leading up to its debut album Nervous Like Me. Following the joyous burst of youthfulness in "Hot Dad Calendar," the group is back with another bouncy, endearing new single called "Serious Things Are Stupid," which you can check out over at Steregum as well as an interview with the site’s "Band to Watch" (but Deli readers knew that already ;o). The track will also be found on their forthcoming record that will be available on August 26 via Tiny Engines.

Bubble Cats at Habesha 7.18

Posted on:

Is your life lacking in the sonic sensations that can only be provided by a night of frenzied, unfiltered rawk? Mine too, my friends, mine too. Fortunate for us, the guys in Bubble Cats will be performing at Habesha Lounge this Friday night to provide us with an auditory fix. This four-piece act shreds through jagged riffs, heavy rhythms and crisp vocal shouts backed by an energy that embodies a  punk rock spirit. Their three intertwined EPs (Hiss, Purr and Mews) showcase this energy through crisp production, but is no substitute for their live performance. Joining them will be the sludgy, blues-infused tunes created by recent Medford transplans 100 Watt Mind and Djupang. Show starts at 9pm with a 5 dollar cover, be there for a night of rock n’ roll in it’s purest form. Your ringing ears will thank you for the experience.

Luke Sweeney Releases Second Single From Upcoming Album Adventure:Us

Posted on:

Luke Sweeney has released a new track from their upcoming full length album, Adventure:Us. This endearingly jangly pop rock track is quintessential Luke Sweeney, but slightly stripped down and more lyric based. Doin’ It To You is a pleasing song that doesn’t overwhelm and reveals warm tones, but still contains that sense of humor we’ve come to enjoy and expect: an over the top song title coating a non-aggressive musical composition style that is fun, creative and well produced.

Keep your eye out for the release of Adventure:Us on October 14th us through Aerobic International. –je

WAG Friends w/o Benefits and Sun Valley Gun Club Play Brick and Mortar Music Hall – 7/23

Posted on:

San Francisco based college rock alt band, WAG will be performing live at Brick and Mortar Music Hall on July 23rd. This up and coming young band will be sharing the bill with Friends w/o Benefits, and odd band who refuses to share their recordings to entice you to attend their live shows. We guess that’s cool, we’re all about letting you know about cool shows around town, but a recording would be nice.

Rounding out the bill will be the Oakland based Sun Valley Gun Club whose sonic vibe sounds like sun-kissed college rock. If you’re young, energetic and into fresh Bay Area music, head out to this show.

Eula’s Got A Trippy New Video

Posted on:

Fuzzy art-punk band, Eula, has released a video for their single, "Orderly", the a-side off their recent 7" single.  The hyper-surreal video features a woman dancing in a zebra striped one-piece in front of trippy images loaded with after-effects.  They’ve released several videos for songs in recent years, which always proves be an effective mode of expression for the band; another way to present their signature inconsistency.  Exploring multi-media dimensions is only a compliment to the hardcore genre-crossing fire that their sound encompasses.  Stream the video below, and you best save July 31st in your calendar because they’re playing their single release show at Palisades with Courtship Ritual, Pile and Big Ups, and you know you don’t want to miss that fucker of a lineup  -Jake Sauners

Tocca’s Sound Has Us Gazing Into Space

Posted on:

Risa Elledge and William Wong are Tocca, a genre-defying project unafraid of sharing premature works; unmastered and raw, their songs promise much potential. Elledge’s vocals are undoubtedly enticing and easy on the ears. Accompanied by bright and uplifting guitar riffs on "What You Need to Get By", her slight husk and powerful emotional projections seem effortless. Each track is completely different from the next, and yet flows seamlessly due to Elledge’s consistently distinct and breathy vocals. Stream "What You Need To Get By" below. -Rebecca Glandon

Modern Baseball Just Added to the Lineup at The Fire July 16

Posted on:

The Guild slipped Philly four-piece Modern Baseball onto the slate for tonight’s show at The Fire, as a late edition solidifying a youthful pop-rock-emo-tinged lineup that already featured San Diego’s Weatherbox and Gainesville’s Dikembe, who are set to release a new LP Mediumship next month, as well as fellow locals Hightide Hotel (whom along with Dikembe were part of a four-way split single last year). For their part, Modern Baseball’s open approach toward personal expression touches home in an easily relatable humor-laced appeal toward honesty, lyrically finding ways to sneak in and tie down, while instrumentally rushing forward at a pace in the wheel house that cruises yet demonstrates aggressive tendencies. It’s a good opportunity to get intimate with all the acts this evening. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita
