Luluc releases LP ‘Passerby’ + unveils video for ‘Small Window’

Posted on:

Notwithstanding their undeniable talent, until now Zoë Randell and Steve Hassett seem to have been laying low as masters of the indie-folk scene, but have emerged with ‘Passerby’ as a powerful force in bottling dreams and giving them back to listeners with a lovely melancholia attached. Luluc, the now Brooklyn based Australian duo, has worked alongside The National’s Aaron Dessner to craft a wonderfully calm and lilting album that has already managed to charm fans worldwide upon its July 15th release. Dreamlike and simple, the album carries a heap of nostalgia that never exactly reveals the person or place it is nostalgic for. Alongside ‘Passerby,’ the band has also released an artful video for “Small Window” that embodies the same dreamy, ambient spirit of the album—watch it here. – Jillian Dooley

Congratulations to Oh! Grandpa, Our New Artist of the Month!

Posted on:

Congratulations to Oh! Grandpa, our new artist of the month!  While Murfreesboro might conjure up associations with house shows and Glossary’s skeleton friend, it’s time to add Oh! Grandpa’s punchy, piano-driven noise to the list.  The trio draws influence from funk, rock, and blues with a very punk rock sensibility of pleasing their own aesthetics before anything else.  Luckily, what Oh! Grandpa likes is right in line with what Deli readers like; it was an easy win for the band (that may or may not have anything to do with how fun it is to say their name.)  If you have any lingering doubt that Oh! Grandpa can jam the F out, check out the twists and turns in "Stubborn Gatekeeper" from their EP "OG." -Terra James-Jura

Debut Freeman LP Available for Streaming

Posted on:

The demise of the strangely wonderful Ween definitely was taken hard by some of our Deli staff and friends, especially those who grew up or went to school in the Philadelphia/Bucks County area during the band’s heyday. Admittedly, we were a bit confused by Aaron Freeman’s (formerly Gene Ween) 2012 release Marvelous Clouds, a tribute album to Rod McKuen. However, with his first post-Ween LP of originals, Freeman (Partisan Records), you’ll find him returning to the type of songwriting that made the band a cult favorite, albeit with even more pop leanings. Obviously, we miss Deaner’s rock god guitar work, but listening to the new full-length record is giving us a warm, fuzzy feeling that we haven’t had in a very long time. You can check out the album in its entirety over at Spin, and Freeman will be stopping by Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, October 3.

Album review: Attic Wolves – Volume and Boldness (EP)

Posted on:
An introduction made by a banjo at one point in time may have thrown listeners off. But with the recent revival of the rootsy instruments in mainstream music, the banjo has become just as welcome as the drum kit. Kansas City’s Attic Wolves have taken all of the soul from roots music and molded it into their own brand of powerful and emotional folk. Attic Wolves hold the title of The Pitch’s Best Local Album of 2012 (their debut EP, Carry Us On) and now, Volume and Boldness is every bit as good.

Channeling all that soul that is carried in folk tunes, Attic Wolves hit the listener with “Here’s To Looking Back.” A catchy guitar ditty and smooth, mellow vocals serenade the listener. A story of sorts about two people growing close, then falling apart. The song explores how people change and how life is never constant. Though the message is a bit melancholy, the song finishes strong with a positive spin; the old mantra “so it goes” is in full effect.

Volume and Boldness is comprised of five tracks that completely blow you away not only in the sense of the musical composition, but the lyrical heaviness as well; an album to help heal the hurt heart. “Safe and Sound” explores unconditional love. “It’s Not Over” deals with the things in life that are out of human hands. “Leave Me Be” is a heartbreak and a half of a song. The outro song, “I Know Who You Love,” looks into unwanted love from one party to the next, and again, the songs hints that everything will be okay.

The album title is taken from the band’s personal traits, explained in its bio: “[It] reflects what we believe is required of us as a band in order to succeed. Volume and Boldness is our way of doing business.” That statement is ever so true. All the listener has to do is dissect the lyrics to understand.

Basketball Shorts Are A Slam Dunk

Basketball Shorts was born out of a passion for rocking hard and drinking lots of Lone Star.” This, ladies and gentlemen, is what you call the makings of a true Austin party band.
Basketball Shorts come alive on stage with head-banging anthems designed for having a sweaty ball. Inspired by everything from hard partying to pizza to Forrest Gump, the trio’s songs are peppered with quips, adding to those good time party vibes.
A band that doesn’t take themselves too seriously? That’s a band you can really get down with.

Spank Rock headlines a trio of local acts for the Red Bull Sound Select showcase curated by Jump Philly. The temperature will be on the rise tonight as the sensual, steamy, pulse-grinding groove is all but assured to make things hot and heavy with a lyrical flow that isn’t afraid to offer direct observations and raunchy intentions that are guaranteed to make those within the confines of Underground Arts blush, giggle and possibly get a bit horny. The moodily melodic pop-punk of Mumblr will also grace the stage with its varying levels of intensity, appropriately fuzzing out while applicably providing an air of disorder. The unfiltered psych-boogie experiment of Prowler appropriately performing underground will expand one’s expectations and wet the appetite for an evening that dares to boldly tear down boundaries. Adult Swim [Burlesque] w/Schoolly D at PhilaMOCA July 19

Posted on:

Liberty Rose, Fem Appeal, Hayley Jane, and a bunch of other lovely ladies return to PhilaMOCA tonight for another bizarre but enticing edition of the Television Burlesque Art Show. And for this performance, they’ll be doing it to an Adult Swim theme, which should prove to be weirdly entertaining even if you aren’t a fan of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Robot Chicken, Tom Goes to the Mayor, and other after-hour segments. On top of it all, there will be a special musical performance by the Godfather of Gangsta Rap and man behind the Aqua Team Hunger Force theme song, Schoolly D. It’s a rare occasion to catch the man who penned songs like “Gangster Boogie” and “King of New York” loooooong before it was a common occurrence by the likes of Ice-T, N.W.A., Snoop Dogg, and a whole generation of others, especially in such a smaller scale venue. And that’s all the more reason to attend this evening of fun-filled debauchery. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 3:30pm, $20 Door/$25 VIP, 18+ – Bill McThrill

Ian Levy Pieces Togehter a Mosaic

Posted on:

It’s easy for lyrical MCs to go over the top with their garrulous polemics.  NYC’s Ian Levy eschews this tendency and keeps his introspective musings engaging.  In the track “Complex,” he tackles the dichotomy between days teaching the youth in Harlem versus evenings “surrounded by accountants on a thousand dollar carpet; it’s a shark pit scarfing on my conscience, kid.”  Like a painter struggling to choose the right colors to bring a canvas to life, Levy seems to labor over his verses, rhyme patterns, and content to deliver tracks that will stand out in the echoing alleys of a city rife with rhymers.  In the Mosaic EP, available free on his bandcamp page, he examines his potential with such sharp focus that his fans are compelled to investigate with equal fervor. -Broke MC
