Half Waif unveils new single + plays Cameo on 07.11

Posted on:

Merging disparate influences comes natural to Half Waif‘s Nandi Rose Plunkett, maybe because of her Indian, Irish, Swiss and American roots, as well as classical training, love of electronic instrumentation, and a natural inclination towards a pop hook. New track ‘Ceremonial’ (streaming) might take a while to enter your system, but once it does, you’ll be transported by its grace and unexpected depth. From globules of bouncy pop to classic low string style synths, the song shifts through genres with surprising dexterity. There’s a slight off beat to the 4/4 rhythm underpinning the various sonic layers, suggesting a slight element of conflict between the inner and outer, a transience, like that of the waif. Even her voice constantly shifts – crisp enunciation falls on the beat, punctuated with chanting gasps, followed by a soaring bridge with stretched vocals. A downshift in tempo two minutes in does not seem out of place in a track only 4 minutes long, but instead augments its simple symphonic quality. Featured in our latest Best of NYC year end list, Half Waif is currently working on her first full length album, and you can see  live on Friday 11th July at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn. – Francesca Baker

New Video: “School Of Rock Charlotte Kids React to MAN MAN!”

Posted on:

This is adorable. School of Rock’s Music Director in Charlotte, NC, Eric Lockwood, exposed some camp youngsters to the wonderful weirdness of Philly’s own Man Man, and told them that they were about to view the "greatest band in the world performing the geratest song in the world – "Black Mission Goggles" live at Amoeba. We definitely spotted some future music critics and a couple of new Man Man fans in the crowd. You gotta love the brutal honesty of children! Special thanks to Philly Mag for bringing this to our attention.

Willis Earl Beal has been making waves recently with the news that he has left Hot Charity (XL Recordings). It was two months ago that Beal quietly released an ep, Curious Cool, on his soundcloud putting his relationship with Hot Charity in question. In a recent interview Beal listed an array reasons for the surprising but not unprecedented move.

This week CD Baby announced that Beal’s new album, Experiments in Time, will be released in August through their online channel.

Weekly Features: Cheap Blue Yonder play Rockwood on 06.27

Posted on:

Rock pop outfit Cheap Blue Yonder‘s first full-length release, titled ‘Light Sleeper,’ came out in March 2014. With tunes like "I’m Not Trying" and "When You Woke Up…" (streaming) that walk the balance beam between elegant melodies, dissonance and straightforward rock ‘n’ roll, Cheap Blue Yonder gives us music that’s hummable and intriguing at once. The band’s lighthearted stage presence, in a scene dominated by extremely serious musicians, is an extra plus. See them live when they play Rockwood Music Hall on Friday June 27.

Record Review: HEAL – Strand of Oaks

Posted on:

When Strand of Oaks’ new album, HEAL, was conceptualized, it probably sounded like an unremarkable trainwreck. I could see Tim Showalter in a room saying, “It’ll be like really mellow folk-punk, and also, we’re gonna put some ambient synth and heavy metal guitar riffs in there too.” The only reason you wouldn’t roll your eyes is that Tim Showalter has the look of a Viking warrior. However, what should be a seven-car pileup is one of the most exhilarating, soulful, and unique experimentations within the songwriter genre to come along in a good while.

HEAL simply grabs influences from far too many genres to be put in a box. It transitions between aesthetic styles with a deliberate pacing, opening with “Goshen ’97,” as something akin to early The Heavy, gradually bringing in synths to become more and more comparable to Depeche Mode, and by the time the songs “For Me” and “Wait For Love” come around, sounding more like the lovechild between Cold War Kids and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Each song is so radically different that the only thing keeping them identifiable as the same project (or even the same artist) is a rock solid aesthetic and thematic coherence; it’s a record with something to say, and while finding an overwhelming variety of ways to do so, doesn’t go off message for even a second.

The track “JM” is what really exemplifies everything that works about this album; it’s where HEAL goes from simply shifting between different styles to sublimely merging them into a single sound. The song combines furious (yet carefully layered) guitar riffs, melancholy piano, and vocals with a hushed intensity over hooks that concisely capture the bittersweet nostalgia of backwater suburbia. It’s the album’s zenith, a near-perfect balance of head rocking indulgence and sorrowful meditation, tapping into and honoring his fallen songwriting hero, Jason Molina.

And what really should be recognized is that this album is the result of a lot of experimentation and a fair share of failure, coming off 2012’s admittedly subpar Dark Shores, which missteps may fall more heavily on the the shoulders of the album’s producer John Vanderslice. Yet that tonally messy album was really just Showalter coming out of his melancholy comfort zone and realizing the need to trust his own instincts. The result is his latest offering that’s able to make sorrow and existential dread exhilarating and a musical style that’s utterly unique while still feeling completely organic. At its worst, it’s pleasantly reminiscent of other artists and styles, and at its best, it’s blending them together in a way that one could hardly imagine possible. – Daniel Ludwig

Peter Matthew Bauer Record Release Show at JB’s June 24

Posted on:
There are a bunch of fine releases from local area artists this week, but I’ve been really digging my teeth into Liberation! from The Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer. The collection of songs is predominantly autobiographical, touching “on such subjects as growing up in a Hindu Yoga cult, Scientology, the city of Philadelphia, the God Shiva, the city of Varanasi, Richard Dawkins and Jorge Luis Borges, and was heavily influenced by the work of Roberto Bolano & Elvis Presley.” Obviously, there has been a lot to take in with every listen, amidst beautifully hypnotic melodies. Liberation! is out today, and is available via Mexican Summer. Bauer will be celebrating its release tonight at Johnny Brenda’s supported by A.M. Mills, the new project from Drew Mills (ex-Blood Feathers), and Royal Shoals. Johnny Brenda’s, 1250 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Push Ups Bring In-Your-Face Punk to Cambridge, MA

Posted on:

Normally, The Deli New England only covers actual New England-based bands, but I went to a show a week ago at Charlie’s Kitchen in Cambridge, MA and saw a band from Philly called Push Ups, and these guys kicked enough ass to justify getting themselves on a “New England” blog. The four-piece played a short set (only about 20 minutes), but I’ll be hard-pressed to find more local bands who play with that kind of intensity. Lead singer Zac Beaver was all over the place—literally. He ran up and down the room: jumping in the air, crashing to the floor; he even laid the mic down at one point to do a cartwheel. These guys play straight-up raucous punk and it rules.

After the show, they gave me a CD, Grow Up or Try Dying (the background music to this very review), and I was impressed that their recording holds up to their live performance. The opening track on the record, "College Ruined My Life", sounds like a Bronx B-side and it is glorious. For more info about the band, check out their Facebook page.

Wild Leaves unveil new video + play Rough Trade with Streets of Laredo on 07.10

Posted on:

In their latest EP ‘WIND & RAIN‘ Brooklyn’s dreamy folksters Wild Leaves got us used to a really, really slow pace, so the video of new, upbeat single ‘Forever Moonlight’ (streaming below) sounds like some sort of warm-season-induced awakening of senses, and perception and summer – together with traveling – seem to be central themes in the video. The band is gearing up for a Rough Trade show with Deli favorites Streets of Laredo, scheduled for July 10.

Weekly Features: Low Fat Getting High plays The Chris Gethard Show on 06.24

Posted on:

The aggressive grunge punk trio known as Low Fat Getting High puts a bullet bursting with energy, catchy choruses and rough edges right between your eyes. The band has been slowly making a name for themselves thanks to their energetic live shows, and has captured that sort of flare on their latest 4-song EPs: 2013’s ‘Bad Yoga‘ and recently released ‘Poor Circulation‘ – a fanzine/EP collectors might want to own (the band’s songwriter Michael Sincavage is a skilled illustrator who has contributed with his work to various issues of The Deli). Interesting doors have been opening for the band in the last year, including shows in support of Titus Andronicus, Jon Spencer and Bass Drum of Death, and – on June 24 – they’ll be celebrating their (internet) TV debut at the Chris Gethard Show.
