Finley Martin’s Backtracks

Posted on:

Solo artist Finley Martin has spent the past two years creating his premiere album, Backtracks. Finley’s deep voice brings a rich flavor to hauntingly beautiful piano harmonies in the first song of the album, “The Empress of Ireland”. As the album continues, it becomes apparent that his voice is able to do much more than lay the melody for a classical melody, but also fit a variety of modern genres. His versatility creates an album which seems to explore each subgenre of modern rock. The vast majority of his album is acoustic guitar and voice, and the diversity of his sound makes Backtracks captivating. You can catch him this Thursday, June 12th, presented by the RLife Live Series at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, or June 19th at William Jeffrey’s Tavern    –-Hannah Brady

The Wurxs Opening for People Under The Stairs at JB’s June 9

Posted on:

Cousins Gee Moolah & Trons of the production/emcee combination known as The Wurxs will be making a somewhat rare appearance at Johnny Brenda’s this evening. The duo is probably best known for its collaborations with some of Philly’s best rhymeslayers like The RootsBlack Thought, who was featured along with fellow Roots associate Truck North on the track “Visions Polarized,” as part of the group’s WURXSWEDS series. However, tonight they’ll be stepping into the forefront live on stage at Johnny Brenda’s, weaving elements of smooth soul with the forward get-down drive of funk, all while conscious confident flows grab the reins to steer your ears as your body instinctually sways. The Wurxs will be sandwiched on this evenings’s bill by Brooklyn’s Fresh Daily and headliner LA’s People Under The Stairs, whose latest album (and 9th overall) The 12 Step Program was just released last month. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $15, 8pm, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Weekly Feature: Twintapes co-headline The Deli’s Northside Electro Stage on 06.14 at Spike HIll

Posted on:

Brooklyn trio Twintapes doesn’t take the easy way out. Although their bread and butter is plush, danceable electro-pop, they perform sans laptops. And it’s clearly something they’re proud of — the lack of computers is one of the first things mentioned on their social pages. Performance-wise, this laptop-free commitment takes the form of a collaborative chain reaction: singer/frontman Pavel Rivera initiates sounds to all-analog synth player Landon Knoblock. From there, Benny Reiner adds rhythm with an electric/acoustic melded drum set. This unique DIY-electro approach has paid off. Twintapes celebrated the release of single and subsequent video “Everyday Chemical” (streaming) in mid-March.

Dead Stars announce LP Summer Bummer + play release party on 06.19 and 4Knots in Uly

Posted on:

Grungey and fuzzy trio Dead Stars finally announced the release of their first full length this summer, a record dripping with the elements that attracted attention towards them over the years: a pop sensibility through angsty chords, dewy melodies and distorted guitars, and their trademark juxtaposition of the lows and the highs of life. So much so that new track ‘Summer Bummer’ is filled with ‘anti-summer’ lyrics according to Jeff Moore (vocals and guitarist), but that doesn’t stop it from feeling good. Drums so fast that almost sound abbreviated are consummated by a fluid bass line that doesn’t so much lay underneath the melody, but is integral to it, making the whole thing writhe with passion and pulse. New LP ‘Slumber’ is out 6/17 on Old Flame Records – support them at the launch show on June 19th at Union Pool, or see them at Village Voice’s 4Knots fest in July. – Francesca Baker

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Indie Guitar Rock songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Track: “I Was At A Party” – Weird Hot

Posted on:

Local "funk noir" six-piece Weird Hot recently shared a new name-dropping single called "I Was At A Party," which was recorded with Jeff Zeigler. It has a bit of a too-cool-for-school 80’s throwback vibe, and the band definitely sounds like it is partying somewhere that we’d like to be hanging at. Well, you can do just that when Weird Hot performs on Saturday, June 21 at Johnny Brenda’s.

Slowness Releases New Album + Plays Hemlock Tavern TOMORROW – 5/8

Posted on:

San Francisco based ensemble, Slowness has released a new album. This local, quintessential shoegaze – drone pop band’s second release, How to Keep from Falling off a Mountain was produced by Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon, Wax Idols) and Geoffrey Scott and was mastered by Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500).

The album is clean and classic, and upholds the quietly competent ambiance that makes Slowness a uniquely subtle band that is incredibly hard to ignore. They also mix classic images to amplify the intention of their pure shoegaze compositions which tend to become intertwined with complex bridges, and experimental elements that are impressive.

You can catch a live performance by Slowness tomorrow night at The Hemlock Tavern for their album release show!! We’re excited to hear new material from this band. Do your best to make it out and support their new release!!
