Bleach Blonde Dudes’ Prismo Beach Tape

Posted on:

How is your summertime muscle pump-up coming along? Remember, there is no such thing as working out too much; one must simply channel the sun, become the pump, and feel the burn. At least that’s the motto for the hunks of Bleach Blonde Dudes, who will release their debut EP, Prismo Beach Tape, this Wednesday at Holocene.

While I can really only picture some odd elfish creatures ever actually working out to Bleach Blonde Dudes Prismo Beach Tape, the tunes really are dynamite. With a spooky take on experimental rock ‘n roll, the Dudes explore variations of electronic, surfy and psychedelic pop, that can at times feel completely extra terrestrial. Opening track “Zebra” elicits imagery of fictional creatures concocting a witches’ brew to feed an idolized zebra god. “Blue Spiders at the Hot Springs” continues in this haunting dream pop vein for two minutes and 45 seconds before exploding into a guitar heavy rock epic. Aptly titled “Spirit Party” offers another dose of ethereal synthesizer, smooth grooving guitar licks and bridge comprised of what appears to be voices from beyond the grave.

Lending a spot for Bleach Blonde Dudes as they get pumped-up at the release party for Prismo Beach Tape this Wednesday at Holocene, are instrumental psych shredders Mascaras, and electronic chill-wavers Fog Father. The show begins at 9.

Found in the NYC music submissions: KDH

Posted on:

A desert landscape filled with grinding Sabbath-inspired grooves and spacious, psychedelic guitars, topped over with tightly wound harmonies that might otherwise belong to surf-inspired beach jams. It’s an unlikely combo for sure, but that’s the style KDH made their own. The result is a sold-out limited edition cassette named ‘Kill Devil Hills’ that’s as scenic as it is tumultuous. Tracks like ‘Barnburner’ and the anthemic ‘Ratchets’ for instance, pound their way into your skull, while leaving you strangely relaxed and in need to go sunbathing. Check it out below to see what we mean. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Blank Paper releases new single ‘Whip’ + plays Glasslands on 07.02

Posted on:

Blank Paper, a synth-pop quartet we tried but failed to book for the Northside/Best of NYC shows we organized this weekend (the band couldn’t play), just released this new supercatchy single entitled ‘Whip’ (streaming). Employing a wide palette of electronic sounds, Blank Paper blends 80s synthpop elements with quirkier electro ones, all while sleepwalking through lucid lyrics fitting perfectly with last year’s debut record sleeve’s giant, fold-out unicorns. From that record check out single ‘Ambien,’ which revels in this state of unconsciousness. See them live at Glasslands on July 02. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Way to Go Moses Opening for The Cold and Lovely at KFN June 17

Posted on:

The tandem of Bret Buckman and Ethan Cohen, a.k.a. Way to Go Moses, with recent addition Greg Whitney, setup shop this evening at Kung Fu Necktie. Their self-titled debut serves as a calming peaceful injection of folk rock. The vocals wrap around each other in a reinforcing embrace, developing harmonic texture while avoiding the tendency of turning cheesy because the instrumentation provides a perpetual jangly moving aesthetic that plays into the thoughtful lyrical integrity, keeping the sound crisp. The bill will also be supported by local psych-punk/pop trio Seismic Thrust, whose sound is catchy while remaining raw around the edges, and headlined by the LA-based duo Meghan Toohey (The Weepies, Lenka, Schuyler Fisk) and bassist Nicole Fiorentino (Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Spinnerette), a.k.a. The Cold and Lovely. Kung Fu Necktie 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita

NYC Buzz Alert! Mainland plays Mercury tonight + Bowery on June 23

Posted on:

Brooklyn indie rockers Mainland recently released their sophomore EP "Shiner," featuring four diverse songs of driven guitar rock, including noteworthy  single ‘Savant’ (streaming), an upbeat and semi-epic punk rock gem bearing sonic overtones ranging from spaghetti western soundtracks to the irresistible punk-folk of The Pogues. The band, which is scheduled to play Mercury Lounge tonight opening for Made Violent and Bowery Ballroom on June 23 with The Colorist and Field Mouse, has obviously been catching The Bowery Present’s ears, which bodes well for the future, and is enough of an achievement to elevate them to the status of ‘NYC buzz band.’ They also have a couple of shows at NXNE this coming weekend.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

A Comprehensive Guide to Hickey Fest

Posted on:

From Friday, June 20th through Sunday, June 22nd, Hickey Fest will be highlighting some of the best and brightest independent bands in California. Some of our favorite Bay Area based bands will be performing, including the festival’s coordinator, Ash Reiter. We’re excited to share a comprehensive look at who is playing the fest so you know when and where to be to catch your favorite bands! We’re going to highlight a few bands we think you shouldn’t miss, but the full schedule is posted below for you pleasure.

"I dreamed up Hickey Fest because I liked the people in my music community, but felt that many of us never had the opportunity to just hang with each other. We admired each other from somewhat of a distance and tried to connect over the din of rock and roll clubs or between sets for a couple minutes while people smoke out in the cold. But for me this was a hard environment to really get to know anybody. With Hickey Fest I’ve tried to create a relaxed yet stimulating atmosphere where our community of musicians and friends can forge meaningful relationships or even meet for the first time. I’ve seen these relationships carry over from last year’s fest and people are constantly telling me how it was the highlight of the summer. I encourage folks to unplug for a weekend, leave their phones, computers and jobs behind for a couple days and immerse themselves in some real California magic. In fact, what could be more quintessentially Californian than an old fashioned rock and roll concert in the redwoods on the river? I really think Hickey Fest is the type of thing you might look back on 20 years from now and proudly tell your kids "I was there. I was part of that," because the west coast really does have some cool stuff brewing and its wonderful to be able to shine a light on all these great artists." – Ash Reiter

New Track: And the Giraffe “Yellow Dog Blues”

Posted on:

And the Giraffe are comprised of duo Nick Roberts and Josh Morris, who started the project as University of Florida students in Gainesville, FL, and kept it alive through school changes and cross country moves.  Now that the pair is settled down in Nashville, allowing them the luxury of taking Dropbox out of the equation. They have been working on a full-length follow up to superb ambient folk EP’s “Something for Someone” and “Creature Collector.” They released this single, a cover of W.C. Handy’s “Yellow Dog Blues” at the start of this month for a Studio 360 competition.  What comes of their submission is a lush rendition of a 100-year old rag enveloped in a soft, warm haze of diffused noise , much more M. Ward than turn-of-century blues. The band is playing fooBar on July 18th with Bear in the Campsite and Matthew Fowler. -Terra James-Jura
