NYC Artists on the rise: Folding Legs
Stylish melodic songwriting and charismatic female vocals is what NYC based trio Folding Legs brings to our sonic table with their debut EP "Drown in Light," released in late 2013. If – upon listening – you happen to hear some kind of old continent element to their music, that’s because two fourths of the band hails from across the pond (Vienna and Stockholm, origin of lead singer Katharina Stenbeck). In particular, we hear a little bit of two European artists we like a lot: Turin Brakes and Likke Li. There aren’t a lot of bands with this kind of grown up alternative melodic sound in NYC, and Folding Legs pull it off really well for a brand new band. You’ll have the opportunity to see them live at Rough Trade on Friday May 16 with Stargazy.
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Track: “Make Out San Francisco” – Gorgeous Porch
Orbit to Leslie‘s frontman Chris Wood began playing around with doo-wop in lo-fi on the band’s EP Preppy Spooky. With his latest project Gorgeous Porch, he continues to experiment with the genre intermingling Casio beats and dreamy melodies to create an eerily beautiful groove. Check out "Make Out San Fransisco" (below), which opens his EP Moomania that was recorded with the collaborative help of Pat Bradley. Enjoy! (Photo by Amy Mulligan)
Thom Donovan Album Release Show The Basement 6.11
June 17th is the release date for pop experimentalist Thom Donovan. Titled "Canon," it will be his third album in his efforts as a solo artist. He has spent years as a studio and touring musician before forming his own band, Lapush, and subsequently splitting off again in pursuit of bending pop music to his classically-trained sensibilities. Such endeavors result in high-brow concepts such as tracks inspired by poems from 1562 ("The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet," Arthur Brooke) with unusual instrumentation and a mind towards ear-catching repetition, like his first single, "Shipwreck." The video is an absolute feast for the sense, featuring accomplished vocalist Ruby Amanfu. The album release party for "Canon" is scheduled for June 11th at The Basement. -Terra James-Jura
What The Festival?! 2014
This June 19-22, Central Oregon plays host to the third annual What The Festival, which boasts a stellar lineup this year that includes a handful of great local artists. From the headliners to the early sets by up and comers, music fans will have many opportunities to see what this region has in it’s electronic suitcase, while partying night and day.
While we would love to rightfully claim festival headliner Washed Out as one of Portland’s own, having written the theme song to Portlandia, he hails from the other side of the country. However, on the same musical plane and also performoing at WTF, is Portland’s homie Emancipator. Producing worldly chillwave music at a high level, he mixes in a variety of live instrumentation, which should be highly showcased at this festival as he will be backed by his band, the Emancipator Ensamble.
Another well known local name on the bill is Natasha Kmeto, who has steadily been on the rise with four albums and a strong national following. Her R&B voice matches well with the dark and laid-back beats that she sings over. WTF is just one of many festivals she will be playing at this summer.
Local producers Solovox (who is currently featured in the Deli Portland’s Artist of the Month poll)and Manoj will deliver energetic dancy sets. Solovox is a live mixer and synth wizard. His music will take you on a funk driven ride that will result in you losing your sunglasses. Manoj mixes bouncy beats that have made him a master at the art of dance music. Other notable Oregon acts are the bass heavy Mr. Wu and Octoban.
It can be easy for larger-scale festivals to neglect local influence. But with a packed lineup of local DJs and surrounded by spectacular scenery, What The Festival Is staying true to it’s Oregon colors. Get tickets to WTF here.

Nightmare the Cat Announce Debut LP
Ah, the fated lyric video! Nightmare the Cat are the latest to give us a first unveiling through sound and words, and with good reason, since they’ve officially announced the release of their debut full-length Simple. It comes on the heels of their much-celebrated EP of the same name (so much for keeping things simple, right?), and it presents the band in all its anthemic glory – the song works as some sort of dance/rock hybrid, incorporating crunchy guitar riffs equipped with the soulful vocals of Django Stewart.
Catch them opening for Neon Trees at the WIltern on June 14. Simple will be released via Capitol on July 8.
