You’ll want the latest from The I Want You

Posted on:

On June 4, The I Want You will release its latest EP, Ah Really, but the six-song set is streaming on Bandcamp now. The EP kicks off with “Off and On,” a catchy indie rocker with hints of dissonance and a delightfully lopsided time signature. Things slow down on the title track, which benefits from a church organ and those cleverly layered vocals on the chorus. EP closer “Total Disaster” is the collection’s IDGAF moment, erupting in a carefully orchestrated cacophony complete with laser guns and canned laughter. The I Want You successfully shows off its range across six songs – a difficult feat – so see if they can pull it off live at Ah Really’s release party on June 4 at Middlesex Lounge in Cambridge with Spirit Kid and Reports. – Jake Reed, @jakejreed

Wooden Indian Burial Ground // Old Light // AU Dunes // 5.21.14

Posted on:

Wooden Indian Burial Ground does a memorable job of overstepping our tolerance, and that goes beyond our sense of hearing. This is a good thing. The three-piece has a way of introducing listeners to another world and continues to expand that imagination. The fuzz is dense enough that for those unfamiliar, it might be hard to take in at first. Get past that initial shock and you’ll be able to decipher the subtleties that draw admirers back. Nothing about it is emotionally neutral. Each musician involved has a built in intuition to keep the intensity going at all cost. If the city began to burn, Wooden Indian Burial Ground would play until the end.

This Wednesday night, they kick off their tour at Bunk Bar with Old Light and AU Dunes. The band has been slowing down live performance dates in the city so the chance to experience this is fading fast. Show starts at 9 and cover is $6.

Lightouts releases new double single “Disappear/My My”

Posted on:

If we were to make a chart of the most important attributes that we think an indie rock band should have, attitude in the lead vocals would be up there together with songwriting and presence on stage – that’s one of the reasons why we like Foxygen so much. Gowanus, Brooklyn based Lightouts score high points in that department, in particular in their new single "My My" (streaming), a fast paced, jangly song that deviates from its natural pop trajectory thanks to lead singer Greg Nelson’s vocals, which, with their character vaguely reminiscent of Echo & the Bunnymen’s Ian McCullough, take everything in a decidedly rock’n’roll direction. The song was recently released in a double single also featuring the song "Disappear."

Josephine and the Wildfront “Sovereign”

Posted on:

Maybe the release of this single from Josehpine and the Wildront flew under our radar, but we’re catching it this go-round thanks to a gentle Facebook reminder from Ms. Moore herself. “Sovereign” features a low guitar line that sounds as though it comes out of the mist, supported by splashy drums and spectral background vocals. Moore plays with dynamics a little, going softer just when the listener is expecting things to get loud. The now foursome is recording their new EP, “Strange Gold.” You can catch them playing at The Boro this Saturday with Bree and Stagolee. -Terra James-Jura

Austin

:: First Listen :: The Hard Pans :: Budget Cuts

Posted on:

I guess you could call Budget Cuts, the first album from The Hard Pans a debut.  Collectively, the members of the Austin quartet have been staples in so many local clubs and scenes throughout their long careers, that it seems ill fitting to use the term. Not many Austin bands receive the praise that is so generously bestowed upon Jimmy Smith and Claude Bernard’s better known outfit, The Gourds and after twenty years on the road and a dozen albums, it is well earned.  This may have led some fans to become pretty broken up about the group’s "indefinite hiatus" announced last year.  But in the wake we’ve seen Kevin Russell’s Shinyribs and now The Hard Pans have their respective time in the sun.  For fans of what Smith brought to The Gourds lyrically and what Bernard’s virtuoso playing did sonically, they are joined by long time friend and sound engineer Mark Creaney, whose prowess as a songwriter serves as a kind of distorted accomplice to Jimmy Smith’s indefinable persona. On Budget Cuts, The Hard Pans deliver an eclectic mix of odd and deranged songs, tied together only by each songwriter’s uncanny ability to outdo the other through atypical vocabulary and perverse subject matter.  Check out the song "Ain’t Gonna Have It" and the rest of Budget Cuts below.

Designer makes noise on “Bye Bye Bible”

Posted on:

Designer’s “Bye Bye Bible” is the strangest homegrown music video we’ve seen in a long time – and we mean that in an endearing way. It looks like five broken VCRs all vying for one screen, none managing to capture more than a second of air time at any moment. The far-from-accessible video is, of course, fitting for the less-than-accessible track, but if you’ve got an ear for grungy punk, “Bye Bye Bible” might actually get stuck in your head. The song previews the Jamaica Plain punks’ upcoming 7” released on BUFU Records, and they’ll usher it in with a release show at Allston’s Great Scott on June 2 alongside Gymshorts, Nice Guys and Speed Trials. – Jake Reed, @jakejreed

We Were Astronauts chases “Doreé” in new video

Posted on:

Ahead of the September release of its new album Artificial Light, Boston-based We Were Astronauts has unveiled its latest video. “Doreé” is a catchy love song that sounds like a Young the Giant track polished with a pop radio sheen, complete with sharp guitar riffs and harmonized vocals. Its video follows the lyric’s story of a man chasing his high school sweetheart later in life – and it allows plenty of time for the band to showcase its performance skills, playing to the dance floor on which the high school love story reaches its dramatic twist. Watch “Doreé” below and stay tuned for the release of Artificial Light this fall. – Jake Reed, @jakejreed

Silent Rider announces ‘Rave Love’ EP + plays Glasslands on 05.30

Posted on:

Some music is for lovers, and downtempo normally is. Silent Rider is the moniker of Brooklyn based producer Reed Kackley, who has a knack for blending angelic melodies reminiscent of The Beach Boys with sparse and tasteful electronic arrangements, without ever venturing on the upper side of the BPM rate (apparently an electronic song should be within 90-120 BPM to belong to the Downtempo genre). The band, currently comprised of three musicians, just unvelied the single ‘Rave Love’ (streaming) from the upcoming EP by the same name. If you are in the mood for some sonic softness, you can see them live at Glasslands on May 30.

P.S. Silent Rider should meet the High Highs and tour with them, a match literally made in heaven.
