Weekend Roundup

Posted on:

Has anyone been tapering their training schedule and carbing up in anticipation of The Tour de Fun on Saturday?  No?  Has anyone cut back to one pack per day to at least make it to The East Room without keeling over? Yeah… about that…

This weekend finds some great bands coming through town with some great local bands supporting them, as well as plenty of opportunities to watch music, ride bikes, and day-drink.

Friday:

Bully is about to get a huge bump in notoriety and awesomeness in opening for Superchunk at The Mercy Lounge.  9pm, $15

Over on the other side of the compound, Vinyl Thief is playing with INTL (formerly The Young International) and Phin at The High Watt, 8pm, $7 (check out their new live video for "Slow Down" below)

Wandering EyeTake the Power Back and The Cherry Bombs make up a night of cover bands that you will actually want to see at the Stone Fox.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to see an all-female tribute band to Rage Against the Machine? (Well, I guess anyone with Superchunk tickets…) The show starts at 8pm, and cover $5.

Current Deli Nashville Artist of the Month Mouth Reader is playing at The Boro in Murfreesboro with Thumper, Boyfriend and Good Sex, 9pm

Deli sponsored Psychedelix Americana 2 night show at The Bell House starts tonight!

Posted on:

There’s quite a bit more to NYC folk music than the uninitiated might think. Musician, show organizer, and ex Deli distro van driver extraordinaire Alex Borsody has managed to bring a bunch of divergent folk sub-sub-genres together for Psychedelix Americana for a two night show at the Bell House on April 11/12 . From Gangstagrass‘ hip-hop flavored folk jams, to Andy Statman‘s legendary flame-throwing mandolin playing, to honky-tonk cover ladies Your Ex-Girlfriends, and West Coast alt-country guests New Riders of the Purple Sage, this show features it all. Even Alex will be joining in, with his own unique take on Folk with his band, Union Street Preservation Society. Other bands on the bill include, Scott Metzger, DEJ Superjam, Melody Allegra Band, Bennett Sullivan, Astrograss Plays John Hartford, King StorkChris Q Murphey, Seth Kessell and The Alex Mallett Band.  The show is sponsored by Relix Magazine and yours truly The Deli Rag.

Get on over to the Bell House Fri-Sat, April 11-12, and find out how much there is to NYC’s myriad roots and Americana scene – ticket pre sale here. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Unicycle Loves You announces fourth album “The Dead Age” + plays Cake Shop on 04.17

Posted on:

Brooklyn via Chicago trio Unicycle Loves You enjoys toying around with oodles of distorted guitars and vocals as if they were the next The Jesus & Mary Chain – and maybe they are! Their approach is definitely more garagey and upbeat, but the musical concept is not too dissimilar from the one the Reid brothers successfully proselytized in the late 80s: conceal great pop songs under several layers of droney, grating guitar sounds and feedback. Check out preview single "Falling Off’ from the band’s upcoming fourth album "The Dead Age" (scheduled for a June release) and see them live at Cake Shop on April 17 with Steel Phantoms, High Waisted, and D.A. Stern & The Sanctuaries.

Stream Canker Blossom’s new Gooner.

Posted on:

I Hate Everyone is officially the perfect song to hate everyone to. Think of The Descendants with female vocals, and you’ve got Canker Blossom. Baltimore-based pop-punk band Canker Blossom brings the punk back into “pop-punk” scene. Strong female vocals run the band’s new album, Gooner, smashing their way over the fast-paced guitar riffs that punks worldwide have always loved. –Hannah Brady

Burnt Ones Release New Album + Play Record Release Party with Al Lover Useless Eaters and Violent Change – 4/12

Posted on:

Fresh out of their van, San Francisco’s Burnt Ones are back home from another US tour, and they’re finally ready to celebrate the release of their latest LP, Gift at Brick and Mortar Music Hall this Saturday, April 12. After a self-imposed six-month hiatus from playing live gigs, the band is making up for lost time with a fresh perspective on its music and live performances.

Though most listeners are familiar with the garage glam sound of the band’s first two albums, particularly their pop masterpiece single, Gonna Listen to T. Rex (All Night Long) off of their debut album, Burnt Ones have pushed passed conventions of the traditional garage rock sound, forfeiting digestibility in favor of creating more well rounded material.

For Gift, the band channeled its erratic live energy in the studio, bundling their pop melodies inside warm distorted layers of dissonance. Fluctuating rhythms lend each tune capricious vibes, and the introduction of a drum machine tinges the record with foreign electronic flavors. Mark Tester’s familiar vocals, particularly during those hushed and subtle tremolo moments, keep the songs anchored and facetted to the band’s roots. Gift, which was released on Castle Face Records on March 25th, without a doubt can still be recognized as a Burnt Ones record, but this time around, Mark and company challenge listeners to pay closer attention, and to actively listen and locate the infectious elements that are always at play in Burnt Ones’s songs.

If you accept the challenge, come out to Brick and Mortar this Saturday for the Burnt Ones’s record release show. The event will feature performances by Useless Eaters, Violent Change and Al Lover. – Lauren Espina

Carved Up Take Over Upstairs of KungFu Necktie April 10th

Posted on:

Be forewarned that the Guild is presenting a show upstairs at KungFu Necktie this evening. The trio of Carved Up doesn’t veil their intention; rather, they tear down the gates with a full-bore sonic assault. However, don’t mistake the group’s unrelenting style for an off the cuff invasion. There is a distinct measured approach; an ebb and flow.  Breathe-catching moments have a calm before the storm feel, setting the stage for yet another all-out barrage. Opening the night, Wives bring an inherently raunchy yet appealing punk rock sound. Sandwiched between the local acts is Chicago post-punk trio Yeesh and Boston rockers Lady Bones. KungFu Necktie 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5,21+ -Michael Colavita

Psychic Teens Bombard Boot & Saddle April 10th

Posted on:

Philadelphia band Psychic Teens are the kind of punk band that make stereotypical 1950’s housewives faint. Fresh off their SRA Records-produced sophomore album COME, their music is an application of the most self-aware sort of shoegazing post punk drenched in the reckless abandon of 80’s metal. Specifically, imagine Bauhaus and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet in a blender. They’re bringing their uniquely grungy, wry, and downright insane brand of prog-punk to Boot and Saddle in what is sure to be an all-out blitzkrieg on your ability to hear the next day. They’ll be joined this Thursday by trippy, massively theatrical heavy rock band The Cassavetes and opener Sad Actor. Boot & Saddle 11131 S. Broad St., 8pm., $10, 21+ – Daniel Ludwig

Ejecta meets our expectations with nude video for “Eleanor Lye” + tours with Sleigh Bells

Posted on:

Oscar Wilde’s quote "I can resist anything but temptations" can be applied both to Ejecta‘s new video for single "Eleanor Lye" (will the nudity "convince" you to watch it?) and… to this post’s title. But hey, we think we earned the right to use that cheapish headline, because we totally predicted this kind of unveiling in our previous post about the Brooklyn duo, who famously promoted their debut LP through a series of au naturel pictures of lead singer Leanne Macomber advertised/posted on Pitchfork. Ok, we’ll admit it, wasn’t that hard to guess. But we are truly wondering how well this promotional idea is working for the band, and how much is actually distracting people (dudes in particular) from their music. For example – as you can see from this post – we are completely distracted. Ejecta is currently touring with Sleigh Bells. Check out the new video here (you may not want to watch it if you are in a public place).

A NYC band between ambient and post hardcore: Jerkagram

Posted on:

Brooklyn trio Jerkagram, formed by twin brothers Brent & Derek Gaines, brings you a special blend of post hardcore, math rock, post rock and ambient. Their twisting, seductively repetitive riffs are arousing and hypnotizing at once. They released their debut LP titled ‘Let’s Talk About Us’ last month and it features a fair amount of laid back tunes to kick back to (at least until the menacing guitar build up wakes you up). An exception to the rule is single "Animal Magnetism," a punchy math-rock gem that concedes no rest for the ears – check it out below. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)
