NYC Band on the rise: Little Racer releases debut “Modern Accent” + plays Pianos on 04.25

Posted on:

We thought the Chillwave… wave was on its way out, but maybe it was just the winter – there’s no point in releasing that kind of records when it’s cold, right? The first seasonal sun has triggered the release of the third (solid) album by the precursors of the genre (Real Estate), while, on the "new arrivals" side of things, Brooklyn’s Little Racer has just celebrated the release of a debut 6 tracks (what’s that, a Mini-LP?) entitled "Modern Accent" with a show at Baby’s All Right this past Saturday. Surf, new wave and dream pop influences chase each other in this very enjoyable collection of songs, which also reference occasionally to legendary British artists like The Jesus & Mary Chain and the Madchester bunch ("Vanessa" sounds almost like a reinterpretation of The Stone Roses’ "I Wanna Be Adored"). This is a very consistent release that might improve the quality of your late spring and summer months – and beyond! See Little Racer live at Pianos on April 25. – photo credit: Abigail Smithson

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Alt Rockers Ula Ruth play Rockwood on 04.19

Posted on:

Connecticut/NYC-based Ula Ruth have the makings of a classic Heartland brand of rock n’ roll, equally parts comforting and always in style, like that old pair of jeans you just pulled out of your closet to wear again this Spring. Merging alt-country with a penchant for large rock anthems, the quartet has just released their sophomore record ‘Restless Nights,’ revealing a larger sound to jump around to on stage (and plenty of room for frontman Nicholas James to stretch his pipes), while still keeping things rough around the edges.

See the video for Let Down below, and discover how to bake shitty tasting steaks and very messy (and possibly poisonous) cupcakes. Then catch them live when they play Rockwood Music Hall at 10pm Sat, April 19th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Poll Nominee: Troller

Posted on:

Rounding up the bands highlighted in our Artist of the Month Poll is gothic electronica outfit Troller. The band seems to have found a fitting home with Austin’s Holodeck Records, through which their self-titled debut LP has already had a couple pressings.

Between official showcase spots at SXSW last month and Moogfest in Asheville, NC this month, Troller has been gaining a bit of (good) attention lately, and it’s all warranted. Through the heavy layers of synth and wide-horizoned vocals, Troller’s sound is dark yet cozy. –Written by Marie Meyers

Melon and the Mayhem at The End 4.16

Posted on:

Trade in an ampersand and take out ‘the,’ and Melon and the Mayhem could easily pass for the name of a trendy new localvore restaurant somewhere in The Gulch, instead of an indie-pop band strongly influenced by jazz and Big Band swing. Mary Ellen “Melon” Klein leads her band The Mayhem through vintage numbers that are smooth enough to flirt with the boundaries of easy listening. The band is kicking off their East Coast tour in support of their second EP, “Bluerise” with a show at The End this Wednesday. “Cinnamon Eyes” is the first song off the album; it definitely hits its stride when the saxophone enters the picture during the bridge, but, face it, few things do not benefit from a sax solo. –Terra James-Jura

Poll Nominee Orthy

Posted on:

In time for some late-night weekend listening, the third contestant in our Artist of the Month poll is Orthy. The dreamy electronic pop is the work of Ian Orth, aided live by some good friends. Orth is also one of the brains behind Learning Secrets, the local dance party which has been an Austin fixture for several years.

The band was featured last month on WXPN’s World Café, but the most recent news to come from Orthy is that they have news coming, so keep your eyes and ears peeled! –Written by Marie Meyers

Foxy Lemon // Mufassa // 4.12.14

Posted on:

The five guys of Foxy Lemon  have been working hard on production, tightening and experimenting with sounds which largely encompass dripping bass, strong drums, and and classic rock guitar elements of rock and blues. They have oft been compared to doing some fresher, glammy Led Zeppelin or Jack White. Keishi Ihara’s voice is emerging, and the band’s work on their  XOXO EP- like that dirty guitar stretch on "Muscat" (oh, sweet wine),  is kinda hot. The fact that they are returning to The World Famous Kenton Club with Mufassa tomorrow night instantly garners my approval. Patrimony open the night at 8:30 followed by The Ex-Girlfriends Club. – Brandy Crowe

Posted on:

The season of new continues onward in full effect for Space Drugs at Kung Fu Necktie tonight.  After hibernating during the winter; the experimental garage punk outfit welcomed a new bassist to the fold, worked on plenty of new songs, and have their next album lined up to be released over the summer. Tonight’s show will be a good opportunity to preview all of the above. The Deadeyes (ex-Grubstake) will be following along with the theme as maestros of elegant punk with violin.  Word is they have been recording new tracks in the studio of late. And Baker Man will also likely be previewing tracks from their upcoming debut EP. Filling out the lineup will be Maryland’s Alarms + Controls. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Tender Vision and The Fantastic Imagination hit The Pharmacy April 12th

Posted on:

Tonight get ready for a long night of live music at The Pharmacy, Philly’s freshest coffee shop west of the Broad Street line. Headlining the night is Tender Vision, the indie poppers with a flair for the vaguely sad. Kings of the DIY circuit with a new album on the way, ex-Catnaps frontwoman Adrianne Gold and bassist William Sallee miss the Pixies just as much as the next guy, but you didn’t write a song about it. Starting the evening off is the six-member folk band, The Fantastic Imagination. Self-described as “psychedelic fantasy,” the band hones in on precise acoustic riffs and piles on edgy distortion and vocal harmonies for a romantic and almost medieval effect. Next up is the shoegazey husband and wife duo Overly Polite Tornadoes from Kalamazoo, and another husband and wife project from New York, Trifles. The Pharmacy, 1300/02 S. 18th St.,8pm, $5-7 –Maggie Grabmeier

When considering shows to check out it’s always important to keep in mind that Austin is a college town, and that there are scores of musical kids plugging in and making music. Really, hitting the student scene is one of the best ways to get your post-punk kick. One of its bands catching buzz lately there and on our poll is shoegaze quartet Hola Beach

The shoegaze quartet has just churned out a new EP, so check out the first track below. You can see them live at Spiderhouse Ballroom on the 19th, with Casual Strangers and Blackstone Rngrs. -Written by Marie Meyers

The Younger Lovers Quaaludes Bad Daddies and Yi Play the Hemlock Tavern TONIGHT

Posted on:

If one thing’s for sure, we at the Deli Magazine San Francisco can’t get enough of Quaaludes and The Younger Lovers. Quaaludes played our first Deli sponsored event of the season, so we were thrilled when we heard that The Younger Lovers, Quaaludes, Bad Daddies and Yi would be playing a show at the Hemlock Tavern tonight.

Yi is an Oakland based band that plays jagged-sounding punk. Recently, they released a track from their upcoming album, Crying called "Going Dumb." It has the perfect amount of fuzz and noise. Bad Daddies is an East Bay band that plays loud and fast punk. Expect a new 7-inch from the band on Negative Fun Records coming in June! And next is Quaaludes – this girl band plays a mixture of riot grrrl, no wave and grunge and are known for putting on a raucous show! And last but not least are The Younger Lovers, an Oakland based band that features Gravy Train!!! alum Brontez Purnell. Playing a form of fast and snotty lo-fi, be sure not to miss out on this show! –Erin Dage

BRNDA Record Release!!

Posted on:

It’s probably the most anticipated release in DC in 2014. At least it’s the release I’ve been anticipating with the most impatience. BRNDA has, until now, only given us a few hints of how fun and interesting they are, a short glimpse of how delightful their sound is. The few tracks released earlier this year sounded strange and familiar, jarring and accessible. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Fred Schneider singing anti-folk songs with Sebadoh! No. It’s BRNDA. And now, finally, they have released their debut album, brenda. Do you see what they did there? If you aren’t at the record release show, like, right now (at Rock and Roll Hotel with The Sea Life and The Walking Sticks) to pick up the album, they’ll be back soon with more after a short tour (that I can’t find exact details about at this point, but their website suggests I’m not lying, and it includes an instore performance at Crooked Beat Records, with Mobius Strip, on April 15th). Enjoy. –Natan Press
