American Television recently released the first song off of their Sorry Sara EP, titled ‘Sorry Sara’. ‘Sorry Sara’ opens with a resonating guitar chord laying calmly below complementing fast-paced chord progressions. The lyrics figuratively scream "zero fucks given". Lead vocalist Steve Rovery is simultaneously apologizing to Sara for keeping her awake as shit hits the fan, and apologizing for the less exciting nights which presumably allows her to slip into the internal hell that a quiet night can bring. You can catch them celebrating(?) Easter on April 19th at Mackey’s American Pub in Manassas. –Hannah Brady
Joel Gion Premieres New Music Video
San Francisco based neo psych-revivalist and Bay Area based music legend, Joel Gion is beginning to gain momentum with his solo music project, Joel Gion & the Primary Colors. With a hand full of local shows under his belt, Gion continues to emerge with the premiere of his new music video, Overthrow. The video is a reflection of the washed and colorful track that highlights Joel’s whispered shoegaze vocals and Ryan Van Kriedt‘s unique and haunting audial production style. Members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Federale, Asteroid #4 and Dead Skeletons lend a hand to this sensuous track.
The video (created by Damien Taylor) is completely trippy and portrays a visual homage to psychedelic culture and rock and roll awesomeness. Look out for this track, which is set for release on 7" and download cards on April 22. Gion’s new full length album is titled, Apple Bonkers and is set to emerge onto the scene this summer. -je

Young Tongue (formerly The Baker Family) make fresh imprint with “Cat Calls”
It isn’t easy for a band to change monikers without facing the risk of losing any, if not all buzz their previous handle may have generated. Not so, for indie pop group Young Tongue, formally The Baker Family. With the release of a digital EP "Cat Calls" the group seems to have made a solid push for relevance to an audience that may have previously dismissed them as yet another Americana family band, to which they couldn’t be further from. They are expected to release a full length LP this summer but for now we’ll have to settle for the 4 track EP, full of rich percussion and dreamy omnichord backdrops. Saturday at Red 7, Young Tongue opens for UME and Megafauna. – Andy Bianculli
Field Mouse announces debut LP
Dream-pop Brooklyn band Field Mouse are preparing to release their debut LP “Hold Still Life” via Topshelf records. Scheduled for July 22, the album was co-produced by the creative forces of singer/lyricist/guitarist Rachel Browne and producer/guitarist Andrew Futral. After splitting recording time between two noteworthy Brooklyn studios (Seaside Lounge and Let Em In) in late 2013, the band delegated the mixing of the songs to Kyle Gilbride (Swearin’ Waxahatchee, Upset). We’ve had the privilege to preview the record and the new tracks stay true to the band’s original dreamy, guitar based style, while adding new sonic elements like synthesizers to the mix. Heartfelt pathos can be frequently found through the combination of sweet vocal melodies and introspective lyrics. “Asteroid,” laments that “it’s a shame” how often we just “walk away” from each other. Deeper cuts like “Horizon City” shows the band expanding on preconceived notions of their overall sound, simultaneously touching on both prog and punk elements. “Bright Lights” ostensibly incorporates bittersweet feelings of longing, joy and sadness, all at the same time. The band will be playing at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn on May 26, and while you wait, check out the video of Field Mouse’s latest single from one year ago, entitled "Tomorrow is Yesterday" – below. – Dave Cromwell
Sweet Spirit
When Bobby Jealousy called it quits a few months ago, fans were left scratching their collective heads. But before there was a chance to mourn, enter Sweet Spirit. Sabrina Ellis’ newest and possibly best group to date. Combining all the urgency and attitude of Ellis’ punk outfit A Giant Dog and all the catchy, pop-perfection of Bobby Jealousy, Sweet Spirit is everything we hoped would come next. It doesn’t hurt that Ellis may be the best frontwoman in town. Recorded material is limited to the recently released "Let Me Be On Top" featured below. You can catch Sweet Spirit in all their glory on April 20th at Hotel Vegas with Mellowphant and Dumb. – Andy Bianculli
New Video: “Whore” – Moon Bounce
The always entertaining Moon Bounce aka Corey Regensburg sprung a new video on us today, and boy is it a doozie. If you have seen the video for his earlier single, “Shake” you may not be too surprised, but this clip is fantastically disturbing. The video follows a creep tyke facing his demons in a surreal series of events. The song, Whore, grinds, humps, and weaves it way through the nightmarish narrative. The twisted serenade is sweet and bitter at once. The track is off of his Dress Rehearsal EP, which is out now. Check out the video below.-Adam G.
Afternoon Metal House Show: Thou and Contempt 4.17.14
If you can’t appreciate the aggression, emotion and straight up virtuosity that produces up some of the best black metal/doom/hardcore music, then I question your roots in rock ‘n roll and music in general. This Thursday afternoon shake off your hipster timidness, release the inner punk rocker you once were and show some gusto at the Megaton Haus show freaturing Batton Rouge doom band Thou, midwest grindcore Cloud Rat, Oakland’s Reivers and Portland’s very own Contempt. While you’re there, pick up Contempt’s January release Skinwalker on cassette. The show starts at 1pm at 10128 NE Pacific st. Portland. – Travis Leipzig
90s inspired NYC bands with good song and terrible picture: Washer
Sometimes all you need – besides a better band picture – is to break things down to the essence. Which if applied to rock’n’roll means drums and distorted guitars. Then throw some vocal melodies over that, layer it a little bit, and voila! Long Island/Brooklyn two-piece Washer does this with effortless ease. With a lo-fi sound that reminds us of our (semi-forever-lost) youth, echoing in part Local H and even contemporary acts Ty Segall or Mozes and the Firstborn, these guys deliver good songs blessed by unpretentious fun. Their jangly jams come to us just in time for spring: it’s time to roll down the windows and enjoy the time-ride back to the 90s. – Joe Fish

NJ “Sophistipoppers” Terrible Terrible unveil single “Pulling Teeth” + announce May release
Don’t let the name fool you. Terrible Terrible is actually a talented group of optimistic musicians from New Jersey (ok, their upcoming record will be called ‘Fail Better,’ but I guess you’ve gotta set the bar somewhere…). New single ‘Pulling Teeth’ takes the quartet to soaring landscapes, where ambient synths marry tightly placed, reverb-soaked, loungy harmonies that take you to church and heaven and back down to Earth again. Fans of the genre known as "sophistipop" (i.e. jazzy pop from the 80s a la Sade and Everything But The Girl) should find common ground – although the NJ quartet seems to enjoy a little electronic experimentation every now and then. Look out for their debut record dropping in the early summer. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
