Album Review: Vulture Legs

Posted on:

A new era of reinvented garage rock is upon us, and there’s no better musical example that represents this statement than San Fran based group, Vulture Legs. Bearing bluesy garage vibes, their four-song EP Crawl With Me ranges in sound reminiscent of a cooled-off Black Keys and a cleaned-up version of FIDLAR.

Organ overtones in No Game throwback their sound to the 60’s, with poetically blunt lyrics (mean on the streets/tryna sell some happiness/woman on the corner, man did you see her? /no she’s not your ordinary girl). With Me Girl leads with a strong guitar interlude, as lyrics plead for a chance with the opposite sex (Won’t you take a ride with me girl/I can show you things girl). Read Between The Lines is filled with fast-paced guitar riffs and battering drum beats as vocals dance up and down the melodies. Citing "a tasty casserole" as an influence on their Facebook bio, the tastiness is inevitably apparent in their first release. We can expect great things from Vulture Legs. –Kat Collins

Ancient River Down Dirt Shake and California Raga Association Play The Knockout TONIGHT

Posted on:

Down Dirty Shake is headling another San Francisco show. This time, they’ll be playing with Gainsville based Ancient River and California Raga Association, formallly the Brooklyn Raga Association. This is going to be a classic psych revival show with diverse interpretations of the genre being expressed by each band. Down Dirty Shake plays psych-soul, with a heavy and stylistic resemblence to The Doors. Ancient River is more Pink Floyd-esque garage, gritty sound that drive, and the California Raga Association brings a roots version of psych rock to the table.

Don’t miss this show!

If you’re paying attention to the 90’s revival that’s happening across genres everywhere, you should probably be familiar with Brooklyn’s Doubting Thomas Cruise Control, who are set to release their new “Appleton ON” EP on Cassette (and digital download), April 22nd . The EP promises to be an intensified, more confident continuation of their effects-driven sound — somewhat gloomy, yet injected with catchy riffs and flowing vocals. Immediately following the cassette’s release, DTCC play a record release show at Emet, in Brooklyn, on the 25th. – J.P. Basileo

Where Is My Mind?: TJ Kong and The Atomic Bomb’s Dan Bruskewicz

Posted on:
If you were wandering along a country road and heard music emanating from a building just a bit farther back, a juke joint were the blues and booze seem to flow in unison and an omnipresent cloud of smoke persists like a perpetual curtain. TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb transport listeners to that cabin in the back with their foot-stomping earnest intensity and Dan Bruskewicz distinguished rasped vocals. The group will celebrate the release of their new EP bluntly entitled Kong, with a show at Johnny Brenda’s Friday. The Deli caught up Bruskewicz to get his take on the process, the community and the future. Check out the entire inteview HERE. – Michael Colavita

Ablebody unveils new single “After Hours” + tours with Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Posted on:

Member of Brooklyn bands between the dreamy and the shoegazer like The Depreciation Guild and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Abel Boynton (aka Christoph Hochheim) is the man behind Ablebody. Under this moniker, Abel put out the debut EP "All My Everybody" in 2013, and just followed it up with a new single entitled "After Hours" (streaming). Almost meditative in tone, the track develops chillwave and dream pop elements through a songwriting approach that is a little more sophisticated than the average – at times almost jazzy – in a way reminiscent of cult (and terribly underrated in the US) UK pop band Prefab Sprouts. Joined by his twin brother Anton on drums, Abel will tour the US in the spring with The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, with a final stop at The Bowery Ballroom on May 22.

Bleachers (side project of Fun.’s guitarist) plays Governors Ball

Posted on:

Bleachers is the solo project of New Jersey’s Jack Antonoff of Fun. (and NJ rock band Steel Train). Jack’s project apparently was solely an independent goal of self-discovery, and news about the band, and its debut album, were kept secret until release of the single “I Wanna Get Better” (streaming) in February. “Except for a small group of people, most of which happened to be members of my immediate family, no one was aware that this music, or this album even existed … even though it existed so deeply to me." The anthemic single has gathered more than 230k plays on Soundcloud in just two months, spreading good vibes with its upbeat optimism. We’re waiting to see what else Antonoff’s band has in store, but in the meantime, fans in the NYC area will have the opportunity to see Bleachers live at the next Governor’s Ball Fest on June 8. – Sammie Spector

Jeffertitti’s Nile Sophomore Album ‘The Electric Hour’ due out April 29

Posted on:

Jeff "Jeffertitti" Ramuno may be best known for playing bass with Father John Misty, but he’s doing just fine on his own. Of all the emerging psych rock bands in LA, and there are plenty, the crown belongs to Jeffertitti’s Nile. They are in great company, but with their upcoming sophomore release, ‘The Electric Hour,’ they have (for now) solidified themselves as leaders of the pack. The energy of the cosmos, like the intangible ether inside a crystal ball traveling the edges of space-time, is packed into every nanosecond of every song. The deeper down the rabbit hole you go with these cosmic warriors, the further from reality you get, and the closer to a mystic truth steeped inside a universe with infinite dimensions. Jeffertitti’s Nile are making music like its a movement. Stream lead single, "No One," and get lost in their sonic web. ‘The Electric Hour’ is due out April 29 on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond. – Jacqueline Caruso

Dot Hacker to Release Limited Edition 7″ For Record Store Day April 19

Posted on:

Mixing alt-rock with art-rock, Dot Hacker’s music feels like the force of a tidal wave made purely of sound. The four-piece, formed by Red Hot Chili Peppers touring member, Josh Klinghoffer, and rounded out by road-worn touring musicians, Clint Walsh, Eric Gardner, and Jonathan Hischke, have planned a special 7" for Record Store Day on ORG Music. Two songs will make up this limited edition release, featuring the lead single, "Whatever You Want." Front and center are Klinghoffer’s powerful vocals, grabbing you by the collar in the first 6 seconds and soaring like a fighter jet until the screaming end. At its heart, the tune is a hard hitting rock anthem, but the layers and layers of meticulous soundscapes at every transition are what make it well worth the repeat listens – (pay close attention to that tremolo effect on the bass). The 7" will be available April 19 with a sophomore full length expected later this year. – Jacqueline Caruso

Mal Devisa to wrap up northeastern tour in May

Posted on:

It’s hard to listen to Mal Devisa without falling at least a little bit in love. Devisa (aka Deja Carr) deconstructs modern music to its core. Instead of flashy instrumentals and high-cost production, she concentrates on simplifying the music, letting her stunning, soft vocals do the work.  With lo-fi recording, simple bass and guitar lines and dashes of garage-sounding drum tracks, Mal Devisa says she “makes music with whatever she can find.” She’s truly an innovator.

Nearly two months after the release of the For Daisy with Honey EP and following a month-long northeastern tour with Wydyde, Carr gears up for her final two shows before taking a break. Catch her at Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA, on April 21 and at the Montague Bookmill in Montague, MA, on May 9. – Jake Dmochowski
