Pachangacha lets the fuzz run freely on “WEIRDHEAD”

Posted on:

The volume pedal turned to the right on WEIRDHEAD’s cover should clue you in to one thing: Pachangacha’s latest release is going to be a loud album. A sea of fuzz is consistently present but doesn’t shroud the album’s other standout moments, like the unexpected falsetto on “Amphetamine” and the “Oh yeah!” hook on “Boobies,” which seems to be a concise way to explain how the band feels about them. Hooks are certainly a strong suit for the band, whether coming from the group’s vocalist, like on “Boobies,” or guitarist, such as on “Underneath Girl.” Put them on your playlist now and check out Pachangacha at their upcoming New England tour dates, listed below. – Jake Reed

Posted on:

Below is a new lo-fi track from Manors, a.k.a. Dayna Evans, called "No Exit." Well, it was actually written in 2008 along with the other songs that you’ll find on her latest EP, aptly named 2008, which she just shared yesterday. Enjoy!

Nikki Lane to Release New Album “All or Nothin'”

Posted on:

Nikki Lane has announced May 6th as the release date of her second album, “Nothin’ to Lose.” Offering up traditional-leaning country undercut with a strong dose of rebellion, Lane fits right in with New West labelmates Steve Earle and The Whigs. Hearing her purr “It’s always the right time to do the wrong thing,” on her single “Right Time” is enough to want to be in on the heist. Lane is currently out raising hell on tour with the Whigs and Old 97’s. -Terra James-Jura

Portland

Settlers // Team Spirit // Skaters // 3.21.14

Posted on:

This Friday night Mississippi Studios will play host to a trio of awesome bands from both sides of the country. Opening the night is Portland’s own Settlers whose knack for driving, atmospheric indie rock can be heard on the track “Proskater” which you can download here for free or $100… name your price. Next up will be the anthemic and energetic Team Spirit of Brooklyn, who blend a power-pop attitude with surf rock vibes to create an irresistibly rocking sound. Also from New York and closing out the night is Skaters, who are able to seamlessly combine a classic indie rock sound with a nihilistic energy typically reserved for garage rock groups. Their performance, along with the entire venue, is bound to be ecstatic as they play songs off of their debut album, Manhattan. Show starts at 9pm, do yourself a favor this weekend and get to this show.

Loupo experiments with the softer side of hip-hop

Posted on:

If your playlist is lacking something a little more relaxed, perfect for hanging with friends or a long drive, we recommend Montpelier’s Loupo. The hip-hop producer crafts beats stuffed with samples and the production tics necessary to make an instrumental track stand out without vocals from a featured artist. On “GottaGo!!” he turns a vocal sample into its own wah-wahing instrument, and on his latest, “GritZZ,” guitar and drum loops cycle as clanking piano keys reverberate into the distance. Of course, Loupo’s experimental creations are ripe for the picking by up-and-coming rappers – take a listen to Notation and Chel Strong’s “To The Sky,” a song released earlier this month that was helmed by the Vermont producer. – Jake Reed

A droney dream: Metal Mountains play Baby’s All Right on 03.23

Posted on:

We are suckers for mellow, psychedelic bands with sulrty female vocalists. That’s why we are writing about Brooklyn group Metal Mountains and their droney single "Structures in the Sun" (streaming below), full of references to the glorious days when acid was the shit, and the Hammond organ the hippest of keyboards. A violin – filtered through guitar pedals – adds an extra layer of beauty. The band released a 7 track album a few months ago (you can find it on Spotify), that’s consistently mellow, dreamy and… drumless. Check them out live at Baby’s All Right on Sunday March 23 with Zachary Cale.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Psychedelic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

NYC Artists on the rise: Fielded, live at Death by Audio on 03.21

Posted on:

LA/Chicago/NYC based one woman band Fielded (wow, that’s a lot of cities for one person!) is the project of producer Lindsay Powell (originally one half of sister duo Festival and part of experimental prog project Ga’an), who creates loop based music featuring random percussive sounds, synths and several layers of her voice. Latest single "Reign" (from upcoming EP ‘Universally Handsome’) sounds like a truly genreless – although vaguely african sounding – pop gem.  Refreshingly, unlike most electronic acts out there, Lindsay doesn’t feel compelled to fill up the sonic spectrum with all sorts of parts, if not – occasionally, and appropriately – to propelle the track’s chorus.

This is a talented, original artist that deserves more attention; you have a chance to see her live in Brooklyn at Death by Audio tomorrow (03.21).

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Cathartic electro rock with Black Bird White Sky at Pianos tonight (03.20)

Posted on:

Black Bird White Sky describe themselves as a "rock/electro band from NYC with a taste for tragic romance, lyrical melodies and throbbing beats" – and we thought to bring them to your attention because we thing we all need a little bit of "tragic romance" in our lives… We stumbled upon them randomly while checking out what Brooklyn post punkers Grassfight were up to – the two bands are sharing Pianos’ stage tonight, March 20th. Check out their latest video "Talk Talk Talk" streaming below.

Free Download: “We Filmed Clouds” – Tutlie

Here’s the second single, "We Filmed Clouds," from Tutlie‘s debut full-length album Young Cries. The track, which is available to be streamed and downloaded for free below, brings the group’s beautiful, lush vocals together with a welcomed dance groove that hasn’t really appeared before in their previous material. They’ll be celebrating the LP’s release tomorrow night at Bourbon & Branch with Les Professionnels, Cult Choir and Brooklyn’s Ponyhof. (Photo by Leah Kolakowski)

The Sound of Animals Fighting Returns at The Troc March 20 & 21

Posted on:
After a prolonged (since 2006) hiatus from live performing, The Sound of Animals Fighting returns to the stage for a seven-date tour that runs through the end of the month, and kicks off with a pair of back to shows at The Troc, starting this evening. The group, is currently, comprised of Anthony Green (Circa Survive) alongside Matt Embree and Chris Tsagakis, both members of RX Bandits, and former RX Bandit Rich Balling. These shows mark the first ever on the east coast for the assemblage of unpredictable experimental rockers. Unleashing an intensely composed variety of music fitting Green’s vocal style and revving up the instrumental elements – smooth, intricately high-gear guitar-heavy compositions invading percussion and unrelenting bass ready to jump the rails while maintaining contact. While tonight’s show is already sold out, tickets remain available for Friday. This is a rare opportunity to see a seldom-formed collective of musicians, so head on over to The Troc if you can. Trocadero Theatre, 1003 Arch St., 8pm, $29.50, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Joel Gion & the Primary Colours Play Two Bay Area Shows – 3/21 & 3/29

Posted on:

A month after playing their first show in San Jose, Joel Gion & the Primary Colours will be playing their first San Francisco gig on March 21st at Elbo Room along with newly minted SF-residents, the garage psych purveyors, Asteroid #4 and Portland’s space rock outfit, Daydream Machine.

If one stacked lineup isn’t enough, The Primary Colours will be playing a second show on March 29th at The Uptown in Oakland. This time around, San Francisco’s garage rock heroes, Cool Ghouls will sub in for the Daydream Machine, joining the Colours and Asteroid #4 for another anticipated evening of revival rock and roll.

As an ambassador of the city’s psychedelic underground of the 1990s, Joel Gion rose to recognition as the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s erratic and endearing tambourine player. After shifting gears and challenging himself to be a songwriter for the first time, he formed The Primary Colours. So far, Joel has dropped small bits of material like his single, Yes, that features members of BJM and Asteroid #4, and drops hints that he has woven his own textured sonic tapestry. Joel Gion & the Primary Colours has yet to release any news about the emergence of their debut album, but check them out at one of their upcoming Bay Area shows to see what kind of trouble they’ve got in store for you and the scene. –Lauren Espina
