Willow releases “Slumlord” EP, previews upcoming full-length “BlueLung”

Posted on:

Willow’s Slumlord EP has finally been unleashed after recording delays held back its December release date. The four-song collection begins with the muffled vocals and layered guitars of “Fixtures," and things get even trippier on “Colors,” where warbling vocals and whistles fade in and out as guitars bounce off the walls of the nearly percussion-less production. The set closes with the sleepy “Breathe Water,” which also acts as the first release from BlueLung, the band’s upcoming full-length debut. While a release date for the album has yet to be announced, you can keep tabs on the Providence rockers’ Facebook page to find out more about the band’s music and upcoming shows. – Jake Reed

The Deli NYC’s Record of the Month: Frankie Cosmos – “Zentropy”

Posted on:

If you like unassuming, short and charming pop songs about high school, firemen and buses, look no further than 19 year old singer-songwriter Frankie Cosmos. In her just released first full-length ‘Zentropy,’ (though she’s put out at least 40 other digital records on Bandcamp over the years – no joke!) Greta Kline reveals much of her inner child, whether singing about what her dad is up to or how birthdays don’t mean you’re getting older. But ‘Zentropy’ equally exposes a young lady just beginning to wrestle with explorations of love and life anxieties. It’s a fascinating journey just begun, and songs like "Birthday" (streaming below), showcase a melodic talent that’s not afraid to experiment with tempo changes and assorted influences, without losing her signature, intimate style.
If Frankie Cosmos manages to keep half these levels of prolificity in her 20s, we can definitely expect a bunch of hits from her. Because great music – like everything else – is all about trying hard.

See her when she plays at Glasslands on April 28th with garage-pop quartet Toons. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

The Mercy Beat share debut single “Sweet”

Posted on:

There’s currently not much known about electro-pop act The Mercy Beat, though the deliberate veil of anonymity asks us to listen without making any assumptions about the members involved. Which doesn’t sound like such a bad proposition, after all – the song is there for us to hear, and we’re free to judge it by its own merit. So how good is the song, then? Well, "Sweet" seems to follow the very current trend of playing glistening hooks over a steady, rhythmic beat with the new romantic seduction of its lead singer’s dramatic vocal delivery. They’re playing their first show in at the Echo on April 8 at the Echo, which seems like a noteworthy start for a band making their debut appearance. Might as well attend to finally put a face to the name.

Exit Vehicles release first EP.

Posted on:

DC’s Exit Vehicles released their first EP this weekend, and you can find them on Spotify and iTunes. Recorded in famed Inner Ear Studio, it’s an exciting introduction to what will surely become a new favorite. Aggressive yet melodic, progressive yet tight, a solid post-punk rhythm section drives a clean alt/indie sound reminiscent of the best in the city’s history. They’re the kind of band you’ll be bragging about seeing when they were small. As of now you’ll have to wait until April 26th to catch them locally at Axum’s Lounge. Until then, the EP should be on regular rotation on your player of choice. –Natan Press

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: OJR

Posted on:

Singer-songwriter/actor OJR might have been raised in Virginia, but his heart belongs to New York. One-half stone cold rocker, one-half rootsy folkie, Oliver John-Rodgers is a missing connection between Dylan’s acerbic lyrics, and Lou Reed’s deadpan rock posturing that’s desperately needed out there in the jungles of Bushwick. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

New Guts for Hot Guts at JB’s March 24

Posted on:

After drummer Greg Frantz left to temporarily join Bleeding Rainbow, we weren’t really sure what would happen to noisy, post-punk outfit Hot Guts. Well, it looks like frontman Wes Russell has regrouped and teamed up with darkwaver, Void Vision‘s Shari Vari, which should make for an interesting combination. I don’t know of any recordings available from the duo yet so you’ll just have to come out to Johnny Brenda’s tonight to hear what the latest version of Hot Guts sounds like now. They’ll be headlining the beloved Fishtown venue supported by NYC-based duo Weeknight and macabre local singer-songwriter Scott Churchman. It will be their only hometown show this spring so don’t miss out. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

The Bottom Dollars releases debut full length + tours the West Coast

Posted on:

The Bottom Dollars are that well-worn pair of jeans you can always rely on to get you where you’re headed: no matter how dirty they may get. It’s that classic rock energy that works like nothing else as your reliable late night, bar-hopping soundtrack. Coming off a recent album release and a string of dates at this year’s SXSW, the Brooklyn band is currently touring the West Coast  after releasing their new single, ‘Smoker’ (streaming). Taken from their recent debut full length ‘Meet Me In Cognito,’ the track powers through an admission of guilt over a nasty habit. Through pounding drums and down-home guitar solos, the band tries persuading you that ‘momma didn’t raise a smoker.’ Listen below to one of the catchiest tracks from the album, and see if you’re convinced. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Pretty Ugly at That Music Thing 3.28

Posted on:

Pretty Ugly released this single “Space Ghost” in December. It strikes a keen balance between sugary pop and messy garage while fitting in with the peculiar wave of surf rock that has been overtaking Nashville as of late. It packs a lot of muscle into two and a half minutes, and is a tantalizing precursor to the new material the foursome has been laboring over. They present to you two reasons to look forward to the end of the week: a show with Plastic Visions at The End on Thursday, March 27th, and an appearance at warehouse party/free concert That Music Thing in East Nashville on Friday, March 28th. -Terra James-Jura

Holy Wave’s Psychedelic Flashback Fantasy

Posted on:

Through a whirling Teisco organ, fuzzy guitars, and echoing vocals emerges the amazingly mysterious psych rock five piece, Holy Wave.  Like something straight out of the 60s, the El Paso natives are channeling their Zombies-like approach and taking listeners through a labyrinth of experimental textures and sounds. From super chill tunes like “Do You Feel It’, to the busier “Psychological Thriller”, their latest album Relax pushes out to sea and invites you to lay back and enjoy the illusory ebb and flow. Holy Wave are touring up and down the west coast in April, returning home for Austin Psych Fest on Thursday, May 1st.  – Written by Jodi Lang

Future Twin Luke Sweeney Daydream Machine and Johnny Holleran Play Brick and Mortar TONIGHT

Posted on:

Kymberli’s Music Box Presents a stellar line up tonight at San Francisco’s Brick and Mortar Music Hall. Influential local bands, Future Twin and Luke Sweeney will share the stage with Portland based dreamgaze rock band, Daydream Machine and Johnny Holleran of the band Without George, who will be opening the show with a solo acoustic set.

Future Twin is a sweet sounding punkabilly, soulful garage rock band that will bring a strong live performance. Janis Joplin-esqe vocals are evenly woven throughout twangy power chord riffs, making for a unique and untraditional punk soul sound. Luke Sweeney‘s gazey and romance-centric ballads are a post modern reflection of ’50s pop love songs. If you like The Black Lips’ tamer ballads, you’ll enjoy Luke Sweeney. Daydream Machine creates lush walls of sound with their music. Doused with seamless harmonies and a slightly complex shoegaze compositional style that never overwhelms, this band puts on a pristine live show, and George Holleran will open the show with an acoustic set that will set the mood for a night of eclectic music.

Make sure you make it out to Brick and Mortar Music Hall tonight. –je
