Little Ass Boombox 3.28.14

Posted on:

The annual Big Ass Boombox Festival is a free showcase of a huge spread of up-and-coming local bands and writers. Building from the festival’s success, the monthly showcase, Lil’ Ass B-Bo, as everybody is calling it, offers a smaller sample of great new bands, authors, and starting this month, comedians. This month’s lineup includes Sweet Tooth, Adam Brock 4, Family Night, Max Fortune, and Sioux Falls. You gotta catch ’em all, but definitely catch Adam Brock 4 for sweet pop tunes somewhere between jazz and folk with remarkable vocals, and sioux Falls for a throwback to late 90’s indie pop reminiscent to early Modest Mouse crossed with Foo Fighters.

Little Ass Boombox is happening Friday, 3.28.14 at Kelly’s Olympian. The show is free. – Chandler Strutz

Tension without release: the sound of NYC punks Weird Womb

Posted on:

Undeniably, the electric guitar, which was almost marginalized by Brooklyn bands of the late aughts like Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Matt & Kim and Grizzly Bear, is taking back a dominant role in the NYC scene’s sound of the 10s. This thanks to a generation of young bands like Weird Womb – which we highlighted in our latest Best of NYC Poll for emerging artists – who find inspiration in the guitar-centric, heavy sound of the 90s. From that decade, these four Brooklyn dudes chose as main inspiration the rather uncompromising sound of post-hardcore, brought to fame by legendary DC band Fugazi, delivering an explosive 7" sarcastically titled "Ruined by the 90’s," self released in May of 2013. The three songs on the EP are concise excersises in tension without release, and should be really experienced exclusively in a live setting (in places that allow mosh pits).

Asaad Album Release Show at Silk City March 26

Posted on:

Asaad (born Saayid Asaad) has been one of the most prolific and controversial artists in the local hip-hop scene. Since dropping his debut mixtape Flowers in 2009, the North Philly emcee/producer has released seven other albums and nearly a hundred tracks. He first caught our attention with 2011’s #DIRTYMIDDLECLASS, which helped to get him nominated for The Deli’s annual year-end Best Emerging Artists Poll, where he won Philly’s Readers’/Fans’ segment of the competition. 2012 proved to be his most productive year to date with the release of New Black History Month, #WHITE, and #TROY, as major music media outlets began to take notice, but the venomous tongue of the brash, young talent and an album cover that depicted Tupac having sex with Notorious B.I.G. seemed to alienate him from the rest of the hip-hop world. An artist, who once thrived on the controversy, began to show signs of wear in 2013. Asaad surprisingly changed his stage name to Saudi Money, attaching it to a handful of releases, and then, after showing great dissatisfaction with the music industry (there were rumors of him being "blackballed" by the hip-hop community), he attempted to delete the existence of himself and his music from the internet. Well, it seems that the time out of the public’s crosshairs has helped to rejuvenate the Philly-bred talent. He’ll be returning this evening at Silk City under the name Asaad, once again, with a new record, Flowers II, in tow. Come out tonight and experience his rebirth! Tall Heights treks across New England in spring tour

Posted on:

After a while, folk music can all seem to blend together into one big sea of acoustic guitars and delicate voices. What makes Boston’s Tall Heights stand out is its beautiful two-part male harmonies, supplied by Tim Harrington and Paul Wright, who, in addition, play guitar and cello, respectively. “Man of Stone,” the title track of the band’s latest release, reaches the emotional heights of Bon Iver’s most memorable work, complete with wailing strings and careful guitar strums. Later on the album, the duo leans more toward traditional folk music on “Flash Boom,” its flawless harmonies never faltering. If they’ve got you captivated, you can check out Tall Heights at their upcoming New England tour dates throughout the end of next month. – Jake Reed

The Nico Blues becomes The Sound is Fine + releases debut EP + plays Cake Shop on 04.04

Posted on:

New Jersey’s power pop quartet The Sound is Fine (ex-The Nico Blues) have just dropped a self-titled debut EP that put them on the Deli’s map – again. Their pop rock influences give off the vibes of a less-lame Smash Mouth with a guitar sound reminiscent of early Dinosaur Jr. or Built to Spill. Thumbs up for the clean production and recording, which was all rigorously DIY. Listen to the opening track off their EP titled "Big Dream Kid" below via their Bandcamp page and catch them at the Cake Shop on 4/4 with The Everymen. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: Rosy Street

Posted on:

If NYC rockers Rosy Street sound old school to you, it’s because their music is blessed with the quality of timelessness. Kyle Avallone’s vocals find their comfort zone in rambler rock tracks a la’ Lou Reed ("Little Rambler"), sparse acoustic ballads reminiscent of Leonard Cohen ("The Rose), and thoughtful americana-pop numbers ("Downtown Queen" – streaming). Jon DeLorme’s tasteful use of the pedal steel guitar creates a signature sound for a new band that’s full of character and good songs. – photo by Carly Sioux (carlysioux.com)

Free Download: “Solo Harp” – DRGN King

Posted on:

DRGN King just posted the first release since their debut LP Paragraph Nights. The single, "Solo Harp," "was written somewhere in between the hours of 3 and 6 am and fleshed out at Kawari Sound," and is labeled "space pop" on their Soundcloud page, which we do agree, makes perfect sense. After all, aren’t we all a bit spacey at that time of the night? You can stream and download the track for free below.

Escondido Announces May Tour with Wild Cub

Posted on:

Escondio cut their debut album, “The Ghost of Escondido” in a single day.  The dynamic energy between the duo of Tyler James and Jessica Maros accelerated the process, and a shared affinity for spaghetti Westerns lends the project a sense of camp and drama.  The spark of their initial chemistry is still burning, as their social media is peppered with images of the pair in the throes of recording. The duo just announced a tour abroad in May supporting fellow Nashvillians Wild Cub, and are receiving a flood of glowing press during their current tour of the Northeast. Take a listen to “Black Roses” to reacquaint yourself with their realm of fringed jackets and desert sunsets before their new stuff hits; David Lynch reportedly had high praises for the tune. –Terra James-Jura

Weird NYC duo Star Rover plays April residency at the Manhattan Inn

Posted on:

If you follow us faithfully you’ll know that, even though we blog about a lot of different music, bands that sound truly different make us go: "what?" – hey, it’s the NYC scene we are talking about after all… Brooklyn’s Star Rover is a band that defies the genre categories we are so fond of, and this earns them extra points. But it doesn’t mean that we won’t try to throw a label at them: instrumental-prog-roots-rock-that-doesn’t-suck-although-this-label-would-make-you-think-so. You can catch all that at their upcoming Monday night April residency at the Manhattan Inn, in Greenpoint. They’ll also share the stage with other rather "weird" bands we like like Celestial Shore, Steve Marion (Delicate Steve) and Benjamin Lazar Davis (Cuddle Magic). First show on April 7 with Celestial Shore.
