Stream: Pink Mountaintops “Ambulance City”

Posted on:

Steve McBean has remained staunchily dedicated to the different sides of hard rock with his main project Black Mountain for close to a decade now. However, his other significant project Pink Mountaintops has been just as worthy for other reasons – the former embraces sludgy riffs and proggy instrumentation, while the latter has a looser template that can vary from blissful psychedelia to reverb-laden indie pop. Now forget everything you’ve read in this description to begin to get into the mindset of what his latest full-length Get Back sounds like, since McBean has set aside his more genial side to deliver a ballsier record that has more grit and attitude. The story of this album started when McBean moved to Los Angeles, finding a likeminded soul in Icarus Line member Joe Cardamone and subsequently working together on an album that wholly embraces the hardy psychedelia that has shaped this city in many ways. Not to mention the fact that there’s a laundry list of LA-based musicians that collaborated in the making of Back like Rob Barbato, Annie Hardy and Steve Kille. "Ambulance City" is just one of the many rollicking layers found throughout the album, a pulsing rocker that rides a motorik rhythm as McBean and his cohorts implement some fuzz-flaked guitars. There’s much to dig in Mcbean’s newest endeavor, one that should introduce and please both old and new fans alike with its contorted explorations on how to reshape (and sometimes deteriorate) the classic design of rock n’ roll. Get Back will be released on April 29 through Jagjaguwar.

Brooklyn’s semi-lunatic, cheese defier, art rock band Workout is playing Manhattan gay travern Stonewall Inn this Thursday March 6, and to make sure nobody has any excuses to miss this show they are organizing a party bus that picks up ANYBODY who will show up at Williamsburg’s Bar BIA 67 between 7 and 9 pm (multiple rides, folks!). During the trip, passengers will be offered complimentary beer (and music), which will surely help put them in the proper mood to make the Stonewall show one to remember. Check out the band’s recent video for single "Life is a Nightmare," featuring Cher – or something that looks a lot like her.

Where Is My Mind?: Creepoid’s Sean Miller & Anna Troxell

Posted on:
There are definitely two stories that will always stand out in my mind when thinking about the band Creepoid. I once saw the band implode during a performance and nearly brawl on stage at Tritone, after just having such a good time drinking together before the show (definitely like five too many drinks that evening), but then all was good the next morning, and they were able to laugh about it over breakfast. Another classic was when the band’s van broke down in Alabama on their way back from their first trip to SXSW, and they ended up stuffing the nonfunctioning vehicle in the back of a U-haul to bring it home to Philly so it could be fixed (in order not to negate the van’s warranty) – all while taking turns sitting in the back of the U-haul in the van. It’s those unusual tales that help in defining Creepoid for me. They’re a talented group of unique characters, who are chill but can be quite volatile, at times, which reflects in their sound. But at the core, there is familial, misfit bond that propels the band forward and draws you into their music. And today, I’m happy to welcome the long-awaited release of the group’s sophomore self-titled LP, out once again via No Idea Records. It’s another must-have for your collection! I also had a chance to toss a few questions at Creepoid’s Sean Miller (guitar/vox) and Anna Troxell (bass/vox) before they headed off for tour and another hectic SXSW. Check out what they had to say HERE!

Cellar Doors & Cool Ghouls Co-Residency at Amnesia in San Francisco Begins TONIGHT

Posted on:

A single bill with both Cool Ghouls and Cellar Doors on it is a knock-out for any garage-psych fan. Multiply that formula by four and you get Amnesia‘s March residency. Every Tuesday this month, two of San Francisco’s premiere rock and roll outfits–and some of California’s biggest underground bands–will be co-headlining a residency at the intimate Valencia Street staple, and you can join the party for the sliding scale of $7-$10.

Since releasing their eponymous debut LP in 2013, the Cool Ghouls have risen to the forefront of the city’s rock and roll community with a raw, classically-minded sound and raucous live shows. With infectious harmonies, three rotating lead vocalists and the occasional horn section, they never offer the same show twice, and these residency shows will be no different. Currently in the process of recording their second record, the band is ready to unload some new material, though you can also bet on hearing crowd favorites like Natural LIfe and the sweet, facial hair-inspired Grace.

Cellar Doors channels the city’s underground psychedelic scene of the 1960s through their own modern, post punk filter. The result is a dark, distorted psych sound that exists in the more sinister spectrum of rock and roll. Though the band has only released a single EP, 2011’s The Melody Haunts My Reverie, they have been busy spreading their reverb-soaked music like a plague throughout the Bay Area and beyond. Live shows are the only place to hear the band’s latest tunes, so take advantage of the chance to catch them multiple weeks in a row at one of the cozier venues in San Francisco.  –Lauren Espina
