Young Tricksters causes a wave with “Ripples” EP

Posted on:

The latest release from Amherst, Mass.’s Young Tricksters finally delivers its spacious and melodic indie rock to its listeners. Welcomed with a release show at which all of its five tracks were played, its hard to tell which moments deserve the most attention on Ripples – the audience had plenty of cheer to spread around, whether for guitarist Lucas Solorzano’s slow burning solos or the band’s sing-along three-part harmonies. On “Gotta Move On,” the band leads toward 60s psychedelic rock, while it steers in a more alternative rock radio direction on the lead single “Twisted Love.” Buy Ripples on Bandcamp now and see what the commotion is all about. – Jake Reed

SF Electronica to check out: The Actress Not The Character

Posted on:

The Actress Not The Character is an electronic instrumental project from San Francisco, which released a new 7-track album on Bandcamp a few days ago. Their music is textured, with a ambient and rather "delicate" industrial influences – i.e. think about noises made by small machines rather than by Ministry or NIN. These guys aren’t afraid to tense sounding atmospheres, but always in a textural, not too loud fashion. Listen to album opener Monster/Not a Monster below

Mister Tang’s Shakin’ Bones

Posted on:

Ever get the feeling of impending invasion when a song starts playing? The newest single "Shakin’ Bonesby Portland-based Mister Tang could be comparable to accidentally opening the door into a meth super-lab, and running away as fast as you can.  With it comes unraveling emotions of intimidation, disorientation and subtle aggression. Somehow, this song walks the fine line of echoing 1960s garage rock without crossing over to mimic it entirely. Tang’s screeching "I wanted it all" over and over again brings the listener back to reality and away from the invasion. You’re left realizing that we’re all in this together.

Where Is My Mind?: Nothing’s Domenic Palermo

Posted on:
If you didn’t know or haven’t listened already, Nothing put out a fabulous new full-length album entitled Guilty of Everything, which is also The Deli Philly’s March Record of the Month (you can read our review HERE), via hometown independent powerhouse Relapse Records. I ran into the band’s frontman Domenic “Nicky” Palermo the other week after DIIV’s show at The Boot & Saddle, and suggested that we should do another interview together. It had been almost three years since our last one for his Suns and Lovers release. He was down with it, and said that I “had to be able to come up with more interesting questions” than what he’s been getting lately. The pressure was on, but I was up for the challenge. I was pleased to get a message from Nicky the other day saying that he thought the questions were “great.” Mission accomplished! You can view our recent Q&A HERE.

Auctioneer Headlines at JB’s March 5

Posted on:

Art-pop outfit Auctioneer found its inner pop star with the band’s latest single "Hard To Believe It.," and I’m digging it. The mid-tempo, radio-ready track features the group’s first collaboration with drummer Tommy Bendel (Buried Beds), which could possibly get a bit more permanent with the departure of former drummer Todd Scheid, who will continue to produce and record acts out of his studio in the Lehigh Valley. Auctioneer will be headlining this evening at Johnny Brenda’s with support from some fine out-of-towners, Berlin-via-NYC dream-pop act Fenster and lo-fi Burlington, VT trio Hello Shark. NYC’s self described "Street Metal" thrashers IKILLYA are getting set to release their sophomore album ‘Vae Victis’ in April, a record that explodes from your speakers with relentless fury – considering it was produced by Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God/Hatebreed) this comes as no surprise. For the past 8 years, the band has been honing their craft in some of our favorite local haunts like Trash Bar and St. Vitus. Having recently been signed to Megaforce records indicates that Brooklyn’s metal scene is getting some worldwide respect once again.

‘Vae Victis’ is slated for global release on April 29th, check out the video for the title track ‘Vae Victis’ below. – Joey Fish @squidterm
