Not Blood, Paint celebrates “Time to Deliver” EP release at Radio Bushwick on 03.08

Posted on:

This Saturday, March 8th Brooklyn based rockers with Michigan ties Not Blood, Paint will take the stage at Radio Buswhick with full creative control. If you’re one of the initiated, then you know this means something special. If not get ready to make the trek just-off the Jefferson L stop to drink the Kool-Aid and join the party. Part spectacle, quasi-vaudeville, semi-spirtual and chock full of talent, these guys have become masters of harnessing their own breed of magic in their music and live shows.

There’s plenty of videos and tracks online to familiarize yourself with NBP’s genre hopping, avant-art rock epics. Since ‘Time to Deliver’ has been available, we’ve been invited ever deeper into this creative vastness. From the start, "Heartbeat" carries you through an operatic roller-coaster ride of a song with a swinging pendulum rhythm that eventually reaches the throat. The final (and title) track "Time to Deliver", carries the same pivot and roll stylistic techniques those familiar with the group have almost begun to expect. The payoffs come in an angelic-like ascension ever higher into a dreamy infinite world that seems like it may never end… that is, until the final lyric "Time to Deliver" ends the 5 track release, bringing you quickly back to reality.

If you’re into their brand of a-typical neo-prog-beyond classification style of music, then the live show is where you’ll see Not Blood Paint be truly omnipresent. The "New Suit Methodology" they bring with them to every show is truly something to behold, and is often talked about after the final curtain call. And since this is their first "90 minute to 2 hours set," who knows what they have in store. Not to mention: Monogold and Miniboone are the opening acts and worth the ten dollar admission on their own. See you there! – Joey Fish @Squidterm

Communion w/Vacationer, Worshyper, Drone Ranger, The Ghost In You & More at Underground Arts March 6

Posted on:
Don’t worry, Communion doesn’t mean anyone will have to say grace, and it’s more of a bring-your-own-wafer situation (if that’s what you’re into). Rather, it’s a showcase of some of Philly’s fine talent, coupled with the collective’s network of national/international touring acts. Vacationer has probably the most appropriate name out of any band. Their songs transport listeners to a tropical shore with their “Nu-Hula” style: poppy tracks infused with island melodies (some even incorporate samples of tropical birds chirping). The group isn’t afraid to experiment with traditionally opposing sounds, creating music that rises and falls like waves on a beach – sometimes rolling smoothly from one sound to the next, but more often crashing into the ears with varying moods that, somehow, still feel natural. Another Deli favorite, Worshyper, takes their sound in a different direction. The vocals are R&B, the music is electronic, and the result is infectious, futuristic soul. Psych rockers Drone Ranger will remind you that guitars are still alive and well in Philly, adding lo-fi synth that feel like it’s being broadcast live from outer space. They play shoegaze with a little more movement – thanks to the effects leaning toward a groovier sound. Opening the evening will be The Ghost In You, a.k.a. Billy Polard, providing serene vocals full of reminiscence and a wistful optimism towards the past. Queens outfit, Pearl and the Beard, brings a powerhouse trio of vocal artists who sing over beautiful orchestrations of various strings and percussions, alongside the traditional guitar, drum, and bass. Ok, maybe you may want to say a bit of grace for this plentiful bill. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell

There’s no fog in Andrew Scandal’s “Mosaic Mirrors”

Posted on:

Boston’s Andrew Scandal released the album Mosaic Mirrors last month, and the eight-song collection is as trippy as it is captivating. The indie singer knows when to keep it organic (“Rainy Room,” which features instrumentation by The Lightyears) and when to let synths take center stage – check out the 8-bit Nintendo bleep that leads into “Fluorescent Dreams.” Album opener “Superpowers” is a highlight, with its “Do-do-do-do you know” hook and the disorienting vocal echos that crop up throughout the track. Since the album’s release, Andrew’s been keeping busy: he is featured on “Night Swim,” a collaboration with London-based artist ZEEN, and will play at Hotel Vernon in Worcester, MA, on March 21. – Jake Reed

Congratulations to Dancer for Winning the Deli Magazine Artist of the Month Poll

Posted on:

Congratulations to the Bay Area based power pop band, Dancer for winning The Deli Magazine San Francsico Artist of the Month Poll! Dancer won over voters with their style of hook-filled power pop that incorporates ’77 punk attitude in the vein of Johnny Thunders and Richard Hell. Recently the band came out with a 7-inch called Bitchin’ Heat on Grazer Records. The release packs a serious punch with jams on it such as "Heart Failure". We’re happy about their success and wish them the best of luck in their power-pop filled musical endeavors!!

The Greening Album Release w/ Everyone is Dirty and Sweet Chariot at Slim’s TONIGHT

Posted on:

Pop-rock explorers, The Greening will be hosting their vinyl release show for their upcoming album Eon v. Aeon, this Friday ay Slim’s in San Francisco. The band describes their music as Collage Rock, infusing catchy rock and roll hooks with all manner of fuzzed-out, psychedelic space tones. But make no mistake; The Greening is definitely still a guitar band as evidenced by the heavy riffage on new tracks like “Into the Fugue” and the prog-rock inspired “A Victory”.

Also performing are Oakland’s Everyone is Dirty, who combine the grit of 90’s era Sonic Youth with the pop sensibilities of Jenny Lewis and Rilo Kiley. Lead singer Sivan Gur-Arieh’s darkly seductive vocals and electric violin are the highlight of the group’s transfixing live performances. Kicking off the night is Sweet Chariot, a local SF group who plays americana biker rock in the spirit of Tom Petty and Gram Parsons.

Stop by Slim’s this Friday to check out some of the Bay Area’s best rock and roll! -Ethan Varian

Is Olga Bell the Anti-Putin? Sophomore album ‘Krai’ out in April

Posted on:

After the recent international events, Russia’s image would definitely benefit from anything hipper than invading a neighboring country (while pretending it didn’t happen). In this context, a new song by Russia-born, NYC based avant-indie composer/producer Olga Bell is just what the doctor ordered. The musician announced her sophomore album ‘Krai’ scheduled for an April release, inspired by the lesser-known corners of her homeland and written entirely in her native Russian.
Now… we are not very familiar with Russian music, but if it’s anything like this song… maybe it’s time to delve into it!

From The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013: After the Smoke

Posted on:

As far as new wave rappers go, most of the MCs who attempt to push the envelope end up getting lost in the mail bag. Musician / Designer / Developer After The Smoke (who recently relocated to NYC from FL, and made it at #43 in our 2013 poll for Emerging NYC Artists) might as well be FedEx. From the hoppin, bouncin, jumpin electro smooth beats to his characteristic buttery croon, ATS’ music is magnetic and visionary. Somewhere between Andre 3000 and Frank Ocean with a little Shabazz Palaces for flavor you’ll find ATS ironing out the wrinkles in his niche. His album Microwaves is a free download on afterthesmoke.com right now. It will go great with that bowl you just packed. And when the smoke clears, you can listen again. – BrokeMc

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Hip Hop songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Creepoid just premiered the second music video, "Baptism," from their kick-ass self-titled LP (No Idea Records), via NYC music blog Wondering Sound. It was directed by Wade Vanover, and was partially shot on Super 8 film. The idea behind the ambiguous video is "to mimic the creation and deterioration of memory." The band is getting ready to head down to SXSW for a week packed with shows. (Photo by Andrew Swartz)
