Swoon & Sway to Radiator Hospital (Solo) at Golden Tea House March 13

Posted on:

I think that it’s safe to say our love for Radiator Hospital runs deep here at The Deli. The project’s creator and frontman Sam Cook-Parrott is a master wordsmith. Revealing so much heartache and emotion in every one of his lines, I can’t help but swoon and sway uncontrollably to his tunes. If you’ve caught Radiator Hospital live recently, then you should know that he has found a rockin’ band to back him since coming to Philly from Michigan; however, tonight, Cook-Parrott returns to his bedroom roots, performing solo this evening at Golden Tea House. Joining him on the bill will be power popster Spoonboy, Theo Grizol (of Defiance, Ohio and Nana Grizol), and melancholic duo Hot Tears. Golden Tea House, (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

PREMIERE: The Colorines – Paleontolgy (EP)

Posted on:

It’s our pleasure to premiere The Colorines‘ brand new EP, Paleontology, which is the first batch of songs ever released by this soon to be fountain-of-music. The Colorines are Robosco, Dwreck, Ozkr and Grim, and formed earlier this winter. “Each member brought a song or two from either a previous band or one they had been sitting on” Dwreck tells us, creating a mini-smorgasbord of instant classics.

The EP starts off with “You’ll Forget This”, which is possibly the most memorable song of the lot (go figure). A beautiful melody paired with a muted bass and baroque harmonies reminds us of something off of The Beach Boys’ “Holland” or "Friends" records.

Other stand out tracks include the haunting and retrospective ballad "Pseudosyde", the theme song to the 21st century loner. Dwreck takes lead on the number singing lines like: “everybody thinks that I died” and “I don’t see them crying over me, everyone’s having some, and I’ma get me some”. One can’t help but feel optimistic, although this song seems to be derived from nostalgia and those crappy high school years of days gone by.

Though we are totally getting into the darker tones of The Colorines, adding a more upbeat song like “Haircut” towards the end of the EP comes with a sigh of relief. A stream of consciousness about haircuts, hot moms and Facebook-stalking paired with Dr. Dog-like harmonies and a catchy bass and rhythm section that a young Beck would have been jealous of, makes this a great song to welcome Spring (or at least welcome the extra hour we’ve been rewarded by daylight savings).

The EP closes with “The Postmodern Life”, which hits us back again with darker notes but also remains to be the most driving song we’ve heard yet from the Colorines. The chorus is catchy and relatable to every 20 something living in the city: “…coming off a bad year, tell me where you’ve been all the time? …even if it’s greener on the other side, keeping a live but you can’t make it high…” Maybe it should be renamed "The Postcollege Life"?

The band says to be on the look out for NYC show dates this spring and a full-length in the very near future. We are patiently waiting for more from the Colorines.- Sam Kogon (@samkoogon)

New Video: “Moving To Neptune” (Cruiser Cover) – Lucy Stone

Posted on:

If you didn’t know already, Cruiser‘s Andy States has some serious skills when it comes to writing uber-catchy indie pop. Match his track, "Moving To Neptune" (from Cruiser’s debut self-titled EP) with the pipes of singer-songwriter Lucy Stone, and you have something that might be even more infectious than the original. Check out her rendition of the song for Root Down In The Shadow‘s Cover Club below!

The Blacklist Royals Release “Righteous Child”

Posted on:

Blacklist Royals announced their full schedule for SXSW this week, available here. Twin brothers Nat and Rob Rufus are aiming for a June release of their second full-length album, “Die Young With Me.” Inspired by the scars of a childhood spent battling cancer, it’s a more serious departure from the rollicking glee of their debut “Semper Liberi.” Producer Ted Hutt brings the same magic touch to the album as he did with similar blue collar American rockers Flogging Molly, Lucero, and Gaslight Anthem.  Rest-assured, however, that the rough edges are just as deliciously jagged in this new recording; listen to “Righteous Child” for further proof. –Terra James-Jura

Nautica releases “winter” EP

Posted on:

Recorded in a Vermont basement in January, Nautica’s winter is a charmingly lo-fi set. The four-track EP begins with the fuzzy opening riff of “All I Can Be,” which works its way into a catchy, distortion-heavy frenzy of a love song. The trio shows off a softer side on “Whatever You Want to Call It, James,” accompanying the song’s chorus with falsetto harmonies – before immediately turning the guitar effect pedals back on. A recent post on the band’s Facebook page revealed that plans for a short tour later this month have been scrapped, but you can check out the Burlington up-and-comers at the Elks Lodge in Cambridge, MA, on March 23. – Jake Reed

CCR Headcleaner Marriage + Cancer Stillsuit and Baus Perform at The Night Light in Oakland TONIGHT

Posted on:

Tonight CCR Headcleaner, Marriage + Cancer, Stillsuit and Baus will be coming together for a show at the Night Light in Oakland. Baus is an Oakland-based band with a sound that’s derivative of no-wave and post-punk. This month they released their debut LP, Idol MindsStillsuit is a self-proclaimed experimental band from Oakland. Their music is decidedly noise rock with abrasive vocals and jagged guitar riffs.

Portland-based pissed pop band Marriage + Cancer is in town for their second Bay Area and has been supported by great local bands for both events. Known for their reverb-laden vocals and up-tempo riffs, this band is not to be missed as they make their way through California. CCR Headcleaner wages and aural assault on unsuspecting ears. The Bay Area band is loud, sludgy and chaotic. Their most recent release is a split EP alongside Ty Segall’s side project, Fuzz, for the Less Artists More Condos 7 inch series. – Erin Dage

Kimono Kult releases mind-bending debut EP

Posted on:

Kimono Kult is a completely new band, shaping the industry into something no one, not even producers were ready for. A blast of experienced musicians came together to create an statement that is, creatively, all in Spanish. A sextet group featuring Nicole Turley, former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, John Frusciante, ex-Mars Volta and At The Drive-In guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, singer Teri Gender Bender from Le Butcherettes and Bosnian Rainbows, instrumentals from Dante White of Dante Vs. Zombies and Laena Geronimo from Raw Geronimo, this incredibly talented group of musicians got together to debut a four track EP called Hiding in the LightNow I do not speak Spanish, nor have I ever taken a class; my knowledge doesn’t pass knowing how to count to 10, but you can still feel and hear a story coming from the instruments and the tone streaming through Bender’s voice. The Spanish language acts with no rules, executed fluently with its instruments creating a mind-bending experience that even I had a hard time grasping. But that is the point of music – the musician creates the sound for themselves and the listeners choose to create their own story to match it, connecting on different levels. I took this album as a type of philosophy, existentialism, to be exact- ‘stressing the individual’s unique position as a self-determining agent responsible for the authenticity of his/her choices.’ Everyone’s mindset is different and this EP has its crazy, loud and progressively beautiful sounds that make it so jarring without an unsatisfying noise. These hauntingly engaging artists truly test the limits of music, which no one has dared explore before. – Kayla Hay

Evan Patrick unveils video for electro R’n’B single “Body”

Posted on:

Love is a complicated thing. In Evan Patrick’s latest synth-R&B single, ‘Body,’ the NYC artist challenges how we’re used to thinking about the mysterious bond between partners.

The song is taken from latest EP ‘Night Visions,’ and is as much a lusty, after-hours R&B jam, as it is a telling indictment of how we see our physical shells in the digital age. The video pictures Evan in search of Taiwan’s famously over-the-top love hotels: complete with roses plastered on the walls, enormous hearts found on the bed, and a very patient young lady. Watch the video below, and plan your next vacation.
