King Lollipop Santoros Wyatt Blair and Levitation Room Play Brick and Mortar Music Hall TONIGHT

Posted on:

Some know King Lollipop as Cody Blanchard, guitarist for the legendary Bay Area garage rock group Shannon and The Clams, but to others, he’s simply known as the "goblin king of the junkyard, stealing pies from all the windowsills in the wasteland!" In all seriousness, King Lollipop is an artist from Oakland that sings about dumpster diving, trolls and cheeseburgers – in a hiccuping, rockabilly-style voice. Known for having his guitar slung high and the hem of his pants even higher, he looks like he has emerged straight out of a John Waters film, which is something that we at The Deli SF can definitely get behind! He’ll be performing in San Francisco at  Brick and Mortar Music Hall TONIGHT with Los Angeles-based artists Santoros, Wyatt Blair and Levitation Room along with Bay Area based DJ, Al Lover

Bringing a sleepy, psych rock style of sound to the line up will be Levitation RoomWyatt Blair is an artist known for combining elements of glam rock guitar stylings, power pop lyricism and garage rock grittiness. Last year he released his album Banana Cream Dream on Burger Records. Santoros is a group of seven that plays a style of frenetic, psych-infused garage rock. They’re known to put on an energetic show, and have an album called Ancestros that is worth checking out. –Erin Dage

Mount Pressmore Revives Progressive Rock

Posted on:

Rest easy Prog rock enthusiasts; Mount Pressmore is here to keep the artsy, jazz-fusion genre alive and experimental in Austin. After a year of examining and perfecting their songs, Pressmore’s album, Enjoy, was recorded over just three short days before being released last year. Keyboardist and vocalist, Thomas Shaw, takes pride in the accomplishments of his band, as well as his father, Robert Shaw. With 14 Grammy awards behind the famed conductor, it is no wonder that his son Thomas will settle for nothing short of perfection in one of the most difficult forms of rock and roll music. Listen to their epic single, ‘Trampoline’, for a very Yes-like symphonic masterpiece matched with some very David Byrne-esque vocals. –Written by Jodi Lang

A Deli Premiere: Twintapes’ Everyday Chemical

Posted on:

Usually discussions of chemical compounds are limited to physicists, chemists and other ner… ahem… mad scientists. But NYC’s electro-pop trio Twintapes has found a romantic synergy in the elements that might make you think differently about beakers from now on.

The sans-laptop band has always sounded at once experimental, melodic and danceable, but for latest track ‘Everyday Chemical,’ they may have released their catchiest song yet. With themes of addiction, dreams and strange trips blasting from Nord Leads and Tempest keyboards, the song gives science brand new rules to follow. Listen to the track premiere below (and to the Benny Reiner remix here), and see the band live when they play Mercury Lounge on April 4. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Electronic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

rjd2 & Lushlife Throwdown at Union Transfer Feb. 21

Posted on:

DJ/producer/multi-instrumentalist/record label owner rjd2, a.k.a. Ramble John “RJ” Krohn, skyrocketed to fame and hip-hop credibility thanks to his debut LP Dead Ringer and 2004’s critically acclaimed Since We Last Spoke. None too shabby for a virtuoso who records, arranges, and produces all of his songs in the comfort of his fully furnished basement studio. The Renaissance man is back with his latest sonic journey More Is Than Isn’t, and his homecoming at Union Transfer tonight should be a real throwdown, especially with another Deli favorite, emcee/producer/multi-instrumentalist Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Haldar, in tow. Lush has been making waves since his head-turning (and bobbing) 2009 mixtape Cassette City. So tonight will be an opportune moment to see him in his element, especially since he’s been crafting a lot of new material that we’ve been patiently waiting for him to unleash. Check out the collaboration that Lushlife did with rjd2, Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs, Nightlands), YIKES the ZERO, and many others for Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through below! Weekly Features: The Spring Standards travel to SXSW

Posted on:

We caught up with Heather Robb, from the talented NYC melodic folk trio The Spring Standards, a few weeks before the band leaves for a new tour that will take them down to Austin to play the SXSW festival. Touring is obviously a special time for these guys, not only because their live shows are truly magical (not all bands can put out a live record like "Live from Delaware," released in 2013), but also because of the inspiring stories the band collects from traveling through this big, weird country. – LINK: Daniel Ludwig’s Interview with The Spring Standards

Weekend Itinerary

Posted on:

Here is a brief round-up of recommended events for this weekend, assuming last night’s tornadic activity (will someone please name their band Tornadic Activity?) does not lay waste to any listed venue.

Friday:

Hard Working Americans performs at Marathon Music Works. This collective of veteran musicians, including Todd Snider and Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, have come together to reimagine a collection of beloved hits and perform them in a way that tells the story of the working man. Turbo Fruits open, show starts at 7pm, and tickets are $25.

Liza Anne is having a record release show for her new album “The Colder Months.” Sam Pinkerton and Aliza Carter Band join her at The High Watt starting at 8pm. Cover is $7. The official video for her single “Rubble” is available for your viewing pleasure at the tail end of this post.

Saturday:

Natural Child will be at in Grimey’s at 5pm for an in-store performance. The band is performing fully plugged in, there will be free beer for those of age, and their brand-spankin’ new album “Dancin’ with Wolves” will be available a few days before its official February 25th release date.

Go to the Stone Fox to see why folks are fawning over Angel Olsen’s parlor trick of channeling Roy Orbison, and enable local “love song addict” Natalie Prass as she spirals deeper into her obsession. Show starts at 9pm, and cover is $10.

Nashvillian-by-way-of-Chicago songstress Tristen will be at Exit/In, with Adia Victoria and The Wans complete the lineup. Cover is $12, show starts at 8pm.

Sunday:

Southern Sludge rockers Thelma and the Sleaze hit Exit/In. Goodbye June and The Poor Boys join the girls; show is $7, and starts at 9pm.

The Basement has you covered with their no cover Sunday Post in case you spent all your dough this weekend watching talented ladies (musicians or otherwise…) 1933, Jimmy Weekend, Owsley Brothers, The Red Tails and That’s My Kid perform, beginning at 8pm.
