It will be a first tonight for Tuesday Tune-Out at PhilaMOCA when one of its own, Chip Schwartz, takes the reins of curation for February. You may know Schwartz from his critiques for the art blog, doing sound at the Moz, or possibly as that dude with a beard who is always at the Fairmount Park drum circles. For his inaugural event, he’ll be featuring SKGB (a.k.a. Don Stroud), local glitched-out improv analog noise producer. They’ll also be screening freaky Japanese cyperpunk classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man by cult-film director Shinya Tsukamoto. (BTW: I couldn’t help sharing the movie’s trailer below.) True Vine in Baltimore is throwing a show/fundraiser this Friday, 2/7, to help keep the record shop open.
It’s pretty cool that artists can distribute their music on their own with the press of a button these days, but it can be a double egded sword. The less physical records need to be sold, the less record stores stay open. Record stores are often the heart (or some important organ) of a music community. This is certainly true of True Vine Record Shop in Baltimore, a beloved "record shop/community center/walk-in therapy stand." Times are tight for the folks of True Vine, so they’re throwing a fundraising party this Friday, at DIY space 5th Dimension, in the H&H Building (405 W.Franklin Street). The show will include “Rhodes Warrior” Liz Durette, Asa Osborn, Owen Gardner, Strange Times People Band, and DJ Jason Willett. True Vine has been featured by Rolling Stone as one of the best record stores in the USA, and is a Best of Baltimore Winner in the Baltimore City Paper. If you love music in Baltimore, make this your Friday night destination and bring a donation to help support both a local record store and a center for the music and art community. Check out some Rhodes magic by Liz Durette below. –Natan Press
NYC Artists on the rise: Threats keep downtown punk tradition alive
If you’re into dirty underground Rock n’ Roll and aren’t fussed on spilled beer, blown eardrums, and packed bars you’ve never heard of then chances are you’ll like Threats – a band that this year made it in our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists, in the Revival Rock category. Despite having a barely there online presence and an album only available on Vinyl, Threats have a solid following in the downtown scene. Bonded by a love of booze and music, the band is fronted by Jack Ridley (Drowners‘ guitarist), with Drowners lead singer Matt Hitt on bass and Paulo Dell’Olio on drums. The sound is fast and loose, rough warehouse punk revival with subtle surf elements. With great songs, pro musicians and an insane live show these guys are definitely worth a look. Follow the band on Twitter and when and if Threats decide to play a show you might hear about it. Listen to i wanna get high now below. – Bianca Mascheretti
Debut Dutchwizard Album Available for Streaming
mewithoutYou drummer Rick Mazzotta dropped an "8 bit adventure that never was" last night while some were sleeping entitled The Princess’s Dream, under the moniker Dutchwizard. The inspiration for the instrumental album was Mazzotta’s desire to make music that he could play for his friends while hanging out. The release was recorded at My Land/Your Land/Our Land studios in Germantown, PA, during the first half of 2013. You can stream the eight-track record in its entirety below, and it was also suggested for us to listen to the album in a "linear fashion" during a sitting.
Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists: FINAL RESULTS!
Deli Nation,
Our Year End Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!
Kudos to phenomenal punks Diarrhea Planet (pictured) for winning it, and to lo-fi riot grrrl Bully and mellow folksters Great Peacock for placing 2nd and third – we are very happy with this top 3, more gems are hidden in the list below, theough, check it out!
Here’s how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Nashville scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.
If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Nashville produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Luray to play Iota on Friday, February 7th.
DC’s Luray is currently on tour supporting their album The Wilder. The band, fronted by Shannon Carey on banjo, takes the traditional sounds of folk and country music, mixes them up delicately with pedals and synths for their beautiful recordings, and then retranslates those sounds for their entertaining and energetic performances. You can check out an interview we did with Luray a few months ago here. After a few days in New England, Luray is passing back through the DMV to play Iota on Friday, February 7th. –Natan Press

Mals Totem: Your top pick in the 2013 Readers’ Poll
Readers of The Deli New England, with 478 votes, your choice for the 2013 Best Emerging Artist Readers’ Poll: Mals Totem. Last year, the band was covered by the likes of Berklee College of Music, Allston Pudding and, of course, yours truly. With a vocalist that can chameleon across the band’s range of styles and tempos, the band’s eponymous EP is certainly worthy of repeat listening. Check back for an interview with the guys soon, and in the meantime, take a listen to the Mals Totem EP below.
Rusty Belle: Your second place pick in the 2013 Readers’ Poll
Amherst’s Rusty Belle is the second place winner in our 2013 Readers’ Poll. The folksters finished with 461 votes, just 17 behind the poll’s winner, Mals Totem. The band’s mix of folk, country and blues is unique enough, but it’s the myriad of vocal styles keeps things interesting from song to song. “Devil in your Smile” showcases a deep male growl, while “Sad Little Boys” finds Kate Lorenz sounding like a more attentive Lana del Rey. Want even more reason to love the band? In addition to Zak Trojano, the trio features brother and sister Matt and Kate Lorenz. Check out the band’s Facebook page for a list of upcoming shows, including a February 5 gig in Cambridge and a stop in Proctorville, Vermont on February 15. – Jake Reed
And The Kids: Your third place pick in the 2013 Readers’ Poll
And The Kids takes third place in The Deli New England’s 2013 Readers’ Poll. The Northampton-based band released its Neighbors EP in September amidst a flurry of shows in Western Massachusetts and across New England. The all-female trio’s blend of strong vocals and sparkly indie rock comes with a pinch of clever lyricism too; for instance, “You’re making money but you make no sense,” the ladies chant on “Wiser.” Take a listen to Neighbors below and catch And The Kids at T.T. the Bear’s Place on February 13 or at Burlington’s Radio Bean Coffeehouse on the 21st. – Jake Reed
