Best of NYC poll – JURORS’ VOTE: Wet, Big Ups, The Can’t Tells

Posted on:

This year 27 NYC "scene experts" (including booking agents from Bowery Presents, Webster Hall, Pianos, Cake Shop etc etc) helped us with our Best of NYC Poll 2013 for Emerging Artists by choosing their 3 favorite up and coming local acts. These jurors are comprised industry people who work with many local bands throughout the year (we’ll publish the list soon), and their vote is the most influencial in determining The Deli’s Best Emerging Artist of the Year.

Their votes this year produced a list of 60+ artists, which means that – as always – most jurors voted for different bands. But some bands appeared more than once in the "ballots": below we compiled a list of the artists who accumulated more points through the jurors vote only. Kudos to quirky Electro-Soul trio WET (pictured and streaming) for getting the top spot, and to Punk Rockers Big Ups and Indie Poppers The Can’t Tells for getting darn close, tied in second place!

After crunching the numbers of all the votes that came in from Jurors, Deli Writers and Readers we’ll publish the final results of The Best of NYC 2013 Poll for Emerging Artists – it should just take a couple of days.

Dark Blue Opening for Deerhunter at Union Transfer Feb. 5

Posted on:

Ex-Clockcleaner John Sharkey III has a new project called Dark Blue where he teams up with Andy Nelson (Paint It Black, Ceremony) and Mike Sneeringer (who doesn’t seem to be part of Purling Hiss anymore, according to the band’s Facebook page). The trio is coming out with a debut 7" single that will be available via Brooklyn-based indie label Katorga Works. It’s A-side "Subterranean Man" sounds like something that you might hear seeping out onto the shadowy streets of Manchester from its local pubs in the late 70s/early 80s. Dark Blue already has a sweet show lined up for this evening opening for the truly rad Deerhunter at Union Transfer. Hopefully this shitty weather won’t deter folks from making it out tonight. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8:30pm, $15 – $17, All Ages – Alexis V.

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: Maginot and the “other” 90s

Posted on:

The Astoria Pop Rock outfit Maginot‘s debut EP ‘Big Changes,’ which dropped in August, is a concise summary of what the 90s guitar pop was all about. Their melodious hooks and verses are reminiscent of some of REM’s early work and their clean guitar work shows some influence from The Strokes.  Their crisp recordings – in these days of lo-fi epidemy – doesn’t hurt either. Listen below to the rock trio’s song “Know” from the debut release (which you can cop for free) via their Bandcamp page and look out for more to come from Maginot, a band that – according to their own notes – plans to “satisfy the growing demands of an insatiable public!” – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

New Track: “Shake” – Moon Bounce

Posted on:

Building his beats without the use of samples, Moon Bounce, a.k.a. Corey Regensberg, is back with another one of his mind-scrambling tracks called "Shake," which just premiered over at Noisey. You’ll also be able to find it sooon on his upcoming EP Dress Rehearsal that is set for release on Frebruary 25. (BTW: We find it humorous that "Zoolander" apears in the Tags section of the post.) Enjoy!

New Track: “Images” – Bleeding Rainbow

Posted on:

Bleeding Rainbow bring more heat and aggression on their latest track "Images," which features Rob Garcia on lead vocals. It’s the second single off the band’s forthcoming full-length album Interrupt, due out February 25 via Kanine Records. They’ll be performing next in Philly this Saturday, February 8 at the First Unitarian Church opening for Mission of Burma.

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: the lo-fi soul of I/O – live at SOB’s tonight

Posted on:

The most talented artists know how to make a lot from very little. R’n’B Songwriter I/O – a project we discovered through our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists – seems to enjoy these limitations. Whether wondering where things went wrong in the reflective ‘Wasted My TIme,’ or caught in the throes of passion for popular track ‘You Slay Me,’ I/O is a constant tinkerer with his arsenal of audio toys, using his talents to extract the hidden humanity found just beneath the surface of a robotic playground of beatbox grooves. I/O will be supporting his latest full-length ‘Isolation’ when he plays S.O.B’s tonight (8pm). Join him then to show him he’s not as isolated as he might think. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Blank Range Wins 1st Round of 8 off 8th: Road to Bonnaroo

Posted on:

The first installment 8 off 8th Road to Bonnaroo was last night, Feb. 3rd, at the High Watt/Mercy Lounge, and Blank Range took first place. They earned high marks from fans and judges thanks to their magnetic chemistry and air tight musicianship, perhaps not unaffected by guest players from Apache Relay and Diarrhea Planet. This is already shaping up to be a great freaking year for Blank Range, after 2013 involved the release of 6-track “Phase II” in April and “Scraping/Before I Go to Sleep” in November. They are just about perfect for Bonnaroo, aligning closely to the festival’s mellow, down-home vibe, and similarly populated by kids hopped up on various things (in this case, possibly the ghost of Lou Reed.) How many peasant skirts will go flying when the crowds catch a whiff of these post-everything phenoms Nashville has thus far kept hidden? –Terra James-Jura

Artist to Watch: Twin Oaks

Posted on:

Multi-instrumentalist Aaron Christopher and singer-songwriter Lauren Brown are Twin Oaks, a collaborative duo whose doleful, soft-spoken brand of shadowy folk pop conveys a bevy of emotions with minimal resources. The pair recorded their second mini-LP The Lion’s Den in the intimacy of Aaron’s bedroom in Chino, which mosly centers around willowy acoustic melodies locked into Lauren’s brittle, yet evocative vocal delivery. Their sparse approach creates a spaciousness that lets the bittersweet compositions breathe, suffused with the calmness of a sunlit early morning. One could easily describe it as dreamy or blissful, but there’s nary a shrouded note – these are songs that pulsate with quiet emotion and golden-hued translucence. The duo is currently in the process of recording their debut full-length, which should further illustrate their delicate timbre. – Juan Rodríguez

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Portland Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Portland Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it of with remarkable flair!

Kudos to nocturnal psych-rockers Genders (pictured) for winning it! Thumbs up to ethereal dream poppers WL and to sugary indie pop maestros Wild Ones.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Portland scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Portland produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Tim Larson @ Saki

Posted on:

Tim Larson (The Drovers) released his latest solo album, Vargar, today. The album’s sound is dark and methodical, which blends well with Larson’s deep, rich vocals.

You can catch Tim Larson @ Saki on Feb. 8th with Transmontane.
