Tropic of Pisces releases debut EP, plays Baby’s All Right on 02.13

Posted on:

It seems appropriate for a glockenspiel player to have a project with heavy tropical influences, although the origins of the instrument – as betrayed by its name – are from what is arguably one of the least tropical places: Germany. Tropic of Pisces is the new project from the guitarist/glockenspieler of Oberhofer, Mathew Scheiner. In his band’s lighthearted melodies you’ll find an affinity with Vampire Weekend, although Mathew’s melodies have a jazzier feel to them. Charming single "Symmetry" (streaming), from the omonymous EP out on 02.25, is a playful carribean-pop ditty with a synchopated chorus that might make you feel tipsy. See them live when they play Baby’s All Right on 02.13 with other northworthy Brooklyn bands Fort Lean and Sacco.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Bad Side Opening for NOBUNNY at Underground Arts Feb. 7

Posted on:
Sometimes bands ease their way in gradually building in energy before reaching a high point, Bad Side is not one of those bands. Rather than climbing the stairs and celebrating at the top, the group unloads a full-scale attack with an immediate hardcore edge. A jarring stampede approach characterizes the instrumentation that embraces controlled outbursts. While the momentum driven avalanche of sound has raw moments, the drums and bass smashing their way through, creating an open space for the vocals and guitar to do work, the group harnesses its collective ferocity finding a path to follow. Local rockers The Whips will be unveiling their new guitarist Kyle Seely. With grimy guitar riffs, a psychedelic twist and a forward thrust, Wisconsin duo The Hussy fills out a bill that will open for the always unpredictable NOBUNNY at Underground Arts tonight. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: Bridget Davis + the Viking Kings, live at Spike Hill on 02.20

Posted on:

Bridget Davis + the Viking Kings  – a folk ensemble that placed third in our Best of NYC Year End Readers’ Roots Music Poll – isn’t your typical crooning Country songstress. Each song weaves together its own unique tapestry of interesting characters and romantic late-night adventures, and most of these characters have some dark stories to tell. These songs are narrative inspiration perfect for anyone with an axe to grind. For her just-released EP ‘January,’ Davis takes the month to task. The eponymous track compares January to a lover that leaves you in the cold, a fairly apt description if you ask me. Let’s hope February treats the singer/songwriter a little better (and us too!), with her upcoming show scheduled for Spike hill on Feb. 20th at 10pm. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Major Powers & the Lo-Fi Symphony Wins The Deli SF’s Best of 2013 Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

This Year’s Readers’ Poll Winner: Major Powers & the Lo-Fi Symphony

We’re sincerely pleased to congratulate Major Powers and the Lo-Fi Symphony for winning The Deli San Francisco Best of 2013 Readers’ Poll (for emerging artists). This hard working band was able to beat out 50 of the Bay Area’s best and brightest emerging bands for the coveted title of our Year End Poll’s top artist. This self-proclaimed “Adventure Rock” ensemble creates large overtures of sound that resemble bands like Weezer, and a more lyric and melody driven Andrew W.K.. We wish them the best of luck, and are always proud to see emerging bands succeed in the Bay Area.

Keep a lookout for an exclusive interview with Major Powers next week!

Runner Up: Down Dirty Shake

Down Dirty Shake is an incredibly enthusiastic band that always throws a hell of party. We’re so happy to give them an honorable mention because they crusaded hard and were in the lead early on in the voting process. With over 300 votes, this band didn’t do to shabby and we want to highlight their hard work, and their ability to pull their fans together. They’re always winners in our eyes.

Down Dirty Shake’s live shows are always a blast! Make sure you make it out to experience their high energy performances and psychedelic soul vibes.

Runner Up: The California Honeydrops

This is another early frontrunner band! The California Honeydrops are a veteran Bay Area group that deserves a lot of respect for their loyal fan base and great music. With a smooth classic rock and roll, blues sound, you’ll appreciate their well produced throwback musical style and songwriting. Make sure you support this amazing local band in all their endeavors. – Jordannah Elizabeth, Editor

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging New England Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging New England Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Kudos to indie rock slackers Krill (pictured) for winning it hands down!

Thumbs up to multifaceted blues rock songwriter Sarah Borriello and to pop experimenters And the Kids.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free) and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ New England scene experts (our jury) and asked them to nominate three more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music New England produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Communion Night w/Caveman, Commonwealth Choir, Cruiser & More at Underground Arts Feb. 6

Posted on:
Are you ready to be saved? No? Neither am I, but I am very pumped to get out of my apartment tonight after all this sleet and snow. Where will I be? Communion is bringing their monthly music showcase once again to Underground Arts. The event connects rising national/international touring acts with some of your favorite locals. This evening features former Deli NYC Emerging Artist of the Year, Caveman, whose intelligent indie pop is so good for the soul. They’ll also be supported by indie-rock heartthrobs Commonwealth Choir, uber-catchy, buzzing indie-popsters Cruiser, Damn Right! (who will be accompanied by Grimace Federation’s Wes Schwartz on guitar, and we also heard that they’ve been moving away from their former jam-band sound to something in the vein of dreamy Washed Out meets Tycho), and much more. Now, let us pray. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
