Milk Was A Bad Choice at The Milk Bar Showcases Religious Girls GuMMyBeAR The Classical and Eitch TONIGHT

Posted on:

Every Wednesday, San Francisco based bar and venue, The Milk Bar hosts an event showcasing local talent called, Milk Was a Bad Choice. This week, Bay Area artists Religious Girls, GuMMyBeAR, The Classical and Eitch will all be playing this ongoing event.

Oakland mainstays, Religious Girls have been perfecting their performances down to an art since 2008. Making the bold choice to play on the floor rather than a stage, they strive to have both the audience and performer on the same level. Playing their own brand of experimental pop which is heavily dependent on harmonies and percussion with intricate time signatures, we’re sure that Religious Girls will wow audiences tonight!

Another Oakland based artist, GuMMyBeAR is well known for playing experimental "glitch" hip-hop. Their instrumentals for the most part, creates light and airy beats. The Classical, a San Francisco based group, brings their style of subdued avant-garde indie pop to the table. And finally, San Francisco and New York based artist Eitch, pronounced, "H" has made a sound all her own. Striving to make music with equal parts alternative, electronica and pop, she has coined the term "altronipop" to describe her music.

Be sure to see all of these artists tonight at the Milk Bar! – Erin Dage

NYC Artists on the rise: paris_monster end Rockwood Residency

Posted on:

The duo paris_monster just finished a residency at Rockwood Music Hall, and I was fortunate to see them two of those nights. A duo with a fair amount of equipment, they planted themselves half on the minuscule stage, half on the floor. Josh Dion had a simple kit on his left side, two synths on his right, and his vocal mic in the middle. Throughout the set, Dion demonstrated inhuman coordination, splitting his mind between drums, synth and voice – an impressive sight to behold! Geoff Kraly in the meantime created electronic drony sound-scapes with his bass and extensive pedal board. They have a bit of soul, electronica, and progressive rhythms all mixed up in a broth of alt rock energy. Keep your eyes locked on these two, and check out their video of single ‘Pride,’ streaming below. – Paul Jordan Talbot

Posted on:
It seems that the Northern Liberties Winter Music Festival has brought with them more winter this week. Last night, things kicked off with The Grizful Dead, a tribute to the Grateful Dead led by local musician Griz (a.k.a. Chris Grunwald). Tonight is the start of the original music portion with local area up-and-comers Americanan-rock four-piece Pine Barons, alt rockers Family Vacation, indie-outfit Rosu Lup, indie rockers Keepers, and singer-songwriter Chelsea Mitchell (of Dirty Dollhouse). Nothing like tunes and booze to get past another storm. Cheers! The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

The Vigils play Los Globos on 2.13

Posted on:

Cleverly named after the malicious secret society in eighties cult classic The Chocolate War, the Vigils are an instinctive quartet with a flair for grandiosity that touches upon the more sensible side of post-punk. Fronted by the slurred, yet impassioned delivery of Danny Cieplinski, the band are regulars in the West Hollywood scene, playing numerous shows week after week with a tireless drive that resonates in their impassioned performances. They’re seduced by the defiance of rock n’ roll, eschewing choppy, slightly delayed guitar chords and tight rhythmic patterns that are performed with a dramatic flair. But there’s also a danceable feel to their brisk, straightforward approach, served in a brooding swing that interlocks with their scuzzy, yet tuneful sound. The band will showcase their performance prowess next Thursday the 13th at Los Globos.

Needle Points Opening for Dead Meadow at Underground Arts Feb. 12

Posted on:
I am always happy to say that psych rock is alive and well in Philly. And I’m excited about one of its young torchbearers Needle Points. When I say “young,” I mean that the band is relatively new, having only been together about a year or so, but their players are seasoned vets that have been kickin’ it around the Philly music scene for years. Their debut album Bom Tugangu was a welcomed surprise last year, becoming one of my favorite local releases of 2013. I’m looking forward to hearing more from Needle Points in the coming years. They’ll be opening this evening for D.C. stoner-rock crew Dead Meadow at Underground Arts. Also joining the herbal-friendly bill is garage-psych guru and hilarious host of one of my favorite web series Trippin’ Balls, Brother JT. You know what to do! New England Music Awards Week resumes with Young Kaii (aka Kathy Silverio), a female rapper nominated for Hip Hop Act of the Year. The openly lesbian rapper is a role model for young people in the LGBT community, but as an artist, she believes that her music extends beyond that part of her identity. We spoke to Young Kaii about her nomination and her first album, This is Love.

Fort Lean and Sacco play Baby’s All Right on 02.13

Posted on:

Once known for their psych pop sound characterized by heavy drum patterns, single stroked chiming guitar chords and distant synthesizers, Brooklyn band Fort Lean (pictured) released new tracks that show a decidedly different side. “Do You Remember” places emphasis on lead vocals built on top of a rhythm that draws from 50’s do-wop. “The Mall” may still keep guitars out front, however its sing along pop anthem style reigns in previous psych leanings. “Envious” is built around a hand-clap percussion pattern and soaring harmonies that seems to draw inspiration from late 60’s/early 70’s hit radio. “All The Lights” employs dramatic stops and starts, ultimately moving from a slow ballad intro to a quicker paced arrangement.

Sacco is a brand new Brooklyn band that merges ambient atmospherics, relaxed drumming and diverse textural guitar flourishes with an appealing vocal style on their current dark psych track “Driving.” See both bands live when they play Baby’s All Right on 02.13 with Brooklyn band Tropic of Pisces. – Dave Cromwell

Happy Diving Releases New Music Video For Never Been

Posted on:

Bay Area grunge-pop band, Happy Diving has recently come out with a video for their song Never Been. Similar to Pinkerton-era Weezer and Dinosaur Jr., the song is melody-laden and filled to the brim with angst in the best ways possible. In the video, Happy Diving plays the duration of the song while photos from a projector flash rapidly on the wall behind them. Much like the song, the video’s shots are layered and create a hazy atmosphere. We at the Deli SF encourage you to listen to this band’s wonderfully sludgy style of power pop. With dead pan vocal delivery and a healthy helping of feedback in tow, Happy Diving will be releasing a self-titled EP on cassette on local label Father/Daughter Records on February 18th. –Erin Dage

Harsh Vibes Releases Three Songs from Their Upcoming Album

Posted on:

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the intensely dark, screamcore metal band (and SF based band Happy Diving‘s side project), Harsh Vibes has graced us with three songs from their upcoming album. This collection of songs which is appropriately titled, III showcases the tracks, LOVESICK, ENDLESS and UNTITLED. It’s hard to say if or what the full length upcoming album is going to be titled, but the three songs that the band has released are disturbing, loud and awesome. III is aggressive and the instrumental basis of the songs are tighly composed and almost traditional with their metal stylings.

Keep an eye out for Harsh Vibe’s complete album. In the meantime, they’ve shared an insanely strong example of what to expect, and the level of the new material they have to offer. –je

INTERVIEW WITH THE DELI’S BEST OF NYC YEAR END POLL WINNERS: BIG UPS

Posted on:

Big Ups – winners of our latest Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists – are a versatile band. Sometimes their lyrics are delivered in a deadpan, monotone way. Other times they’re delivered with madness, loudly. Similarly, their content is not limited to a stale laundry list of themes (growing up, love, what it’s like being a Millennial). A wide range of emotions are trampled upon: anger, apathy, drunken conversations, ontological inquiries, relationships gone to hell, and more. And just when you’re getting tired of the talking, the pondering, the action returns: There’s as much chaos as there is navel-gazing. Their live shows are equally cathartic, with the same purging, purifying quality to them as the recorded music. – LINKS: John McGovern interview with BIG UPS.
