Richmond’s doom metal power-trio Druglord is releasing a new album, Enter Venus, on February 22nd (STB Records). The cover art alone makes me so happy. Druglord is streaming a track so you can preview the sonic assault (or buy the digital album), but there are THREE (3) versions of this release (follow link for a temporary full stream of the album as well) including a very limited edition with clear vinyl (with “dopesmoke” green splatter) and custom artwork. Garrett Morris, of Richmond metal legend Windhand, produced the record, and there’s pretty much nothing more appropriate to listen to on Valentine’s Day. So listen to it. –Natan Press
The Spyrals Wymond Miles and Quilt Play Bottom of the Hill TONIGHT
Two solo albums deep, Wymond Miles has risen as an ardent songwriter and performer who stands confidently as a separate entity from his long-time band, The Fresh & Onlys. Though threads of his band’s garage rock sound can be heard throughout his own work, he uses his solo project to weave a decidedly prettier, poppier and more outwardly emotional sonic tapestry. Despite its pristine packaging, his sound is also darker than Fresh & Onlys’ music and still driven by his characteristic guitar textures. Miles is playing a rare solo set tonight at Bottom of the Hill, and he has promised, via his Facebook page, that there will be roses, so get ready for some romantic, post punk vibes.
Joining Miles is San Francisco’s own burgeoning rock and roll band, The Spyrals, who have been spreading their jangly, psych-tinged and blues-rooted music around The Bay Area since the late 2000s. Though the band initially established a wandering, sinister sound with its eponymous debut LP, the three-piece outfit injected its music with a fresh sense of urgency to create the tighter, faster compositions of its sophomore record, Out of Sight, which was released last year with Mock Records.
Rounding out the night will be Boston-based outfit Quilt. Currently on a North American Tour that will eventually become a European excursion, this dreamy pop band has captured the hearts of indie and psychedelic audiences alike with its surfy riffs, psychedelic fuzz and three-part harmonies. – Lauren Espina

Punk rockers Your Skull play Mercury on 02.20
If you are lucky enough to have a boyfriend/girlfriend who cringes at the idea of spending a "romantic" St. Valentine’s day, try playing him/her this electrified track by Brooklyn punks Your Skull, entitled "Special Feelings,” from their latest EP ‘Make Elegance.’ Yeah because this band’s mission is to “resexualize the nation’s college rock scene” – so maybe he/she might want to "resexualize" your relationship after listening to it! (Let’s stress the might, just in case…)
At it since 2008, the trio, who molds their sound after the the tradition of 90s inventive punk rockers like Fugazi, tends to mix precise upbeat electric riffs with raw/raspy vocals that range from whispered to full lung screaming. Catch them live at Mercury Lounge on 2.20, when they’ll open for Kansas City’s Deli darlings Radkey. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Drone Rock Brooklyn trio Woodsman releases new album
Brooklyn’s drone rock institution Woodsman celebrated on 02.08 at uncompromisingly DIY venue Death By Audio their new CD’s release party – the band has been around since the late 00s (ions for a project of this kind) and has a bunch of releases under its belt.
The trio’s music challenges short attention span – a disease common to many music fans – with drawn out, instrumental psychedelic tunes that are best enjoyed under the influence of your favorite illegal substance – not sure alcohol will do. The new self titled album merges Dub elements in the form of syncopated delays with shoegazer stylings, noise rock moments, and ambient atmospherics, for a sonic experience that ranges from delicately textural to ear-damagingly full on.
New England Music Awards Week: Bad Rabbits
To cap off New England Music Awards Week, we spoke to Salim Akram, guitarist of Boston’s own Bad Rabbits. Nominated for Best in State: Massachusetts, the nod comes at the end of a huge year for the band. The guys opened the inaugural Boston Calling Music Festival in May and played late night gigs like Jimmy Kimmel Live and the Arsenio Hall Show, and of course, released their debut album American Love. Next, the guys will take the stage at Warped Tour this summer. Here’s what Salim has to say about their crazy year.

New Track: “Violet” – Wilbur
Below is a new, heartwarming little ditty from Wilbur just in time for Valentine’s Day called "Violet." It serves as an introduction of electric guitar and bass by the band as well as drums played by Howe Pearson (Big Tusk). The track was recorded at The Boom Room, and mixed and mastered by Max "Prime" Morgan at SoundButter Audio. Wilbur will be performing next in Philly on Friday, February 21 at Connie’s Ric Rac.
Album Review: Feedback Revival “Feedback Revival”
Feedback Revival released their self-titled album on January 30th. Friends and fans packed into the High Watt that night for an album release show with el el, Kim Logan, Bones Owens, and Queens Boulevard. It was a tremendous and well-deserved show of support for the band’s sophomore effort. The album is a brick of visceral rock ‘n’ roll covering all the bases: gypsy women, whiskey, and outlaws. Cellar Doors Denney Joints and The Shivas Support The Warlocks For Two Bay Area Shows – 2/14 & 2/15
Cellar Doors, Denney Joints and The Shivas will be supporting the influential neo psych band, The Warlocks this weekend at DNA Lounge in San Francisco on Friday, February 14th and at Eli’s Mile High Club in Oakland on Saurday, February 15th.
Cellar Doors are a San Francisco based band that musically blurs the lines between post-punk and psych rock. They seamlessly mix both genres, which makes for a dark, haunting and ultimately enveloping sound. Denney Joints is an Oakland solo act with a taste for ‘80s goth vocals, dream-like choruses and a drum machine. Last year, he released an album called On Repeat on Exitos Gnosis Records. The Shivas are a Portland based band that takes joy in creating surf rock riffs, reverb-heavy vocals and psych rock breakdowns. Known for energetic performances, they put on a raucous and rowdy show.
And with those bands in tow, The Warlocks play chaotically dreamy psych rock songs that embody a drone rock style within their elusively genre bending sound. What makes The Warlocks’ string of Bay Area shows so special is that they’re throwing a San Francisco release party for their most recent album, Skull Worship. Skull Worship is their first release in five years. Currently a quintet, the Los Angeles based band has been compared to the Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3 and Jesus and Mary Chain. With ties to Brian Jonestown Massacre (vocalist Bobby Hecksher was a former guitarist for BJM), the band has gained cult status and has established themselves as one of the most impressive psych rock bands to date. – Erin Dage
Blackalicious Performs at Slim’s – 2/14
The bay’s preeminent indie hip-hop duo, Blackalicious will be performing this Valentine’s Day at Slim’s in San Francisco. Pioneers of The West Coast Underground Hip Hop, Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel have been making eccentric, soulful hip-hop for more than two decades. Like fellow west coast “alternative” rap groups, the Pharcyde and Jurassic 5, Blackalicious favors classic R&B and jazz samples and lofi sounds to the overproduced beats of mainstream hip-hop. Xcel’s funky beats combined with Gab’s complex rhymes and uplifting messages, make the group one of the most charismatic and compelling hip-hop groups touring today.
The duo will be performing classic cuts from their deep and extensive catalogue, as well as new tracks off their upcoming album Imani, which is set for release in June 2014. Joining the group at Slim’s will be special guests Lifesavas, Kween, Myron and Mission-based musical collective Jazz Mafia.
Bring your Valentine to Slim’s for a night of some of the Bay Area’s best hip-hop. – Ethan Varian
