Video: Jesus Sons, “All These Furs”

Posted on:

With the passing of Leonard Knight, the artist behind Salvation Mountain, this video for Jesus Sons‘ "All These Furs," feels more than appropriate. The cinematography captures a nostalgic beauty that not only honors the late artist and his work, but pairs like a fine scotch with the song’s celebratory energy. Following the migratory pattern of myriad garage rockers in their class, Jesus Sons transplanted to LA from San Francisco, only to enrich our rock scene further. If you want to get nerdy about gear, these boys can stand up to the test. While the aesthetic may seem a bit on the nose, Jesus Sons pull it off with pure authenticity. You get the impression that they really do drink their whiskey straight out of the bottle while riding motorcycles through the desert searching for raw life experiences. Snag their debut LP released last month on Mock Records, peep the video below and catch their raucous live set tonight at Harvard and Stone. – Jacqueline Caruso

New Track: “Endlessly” – Nothing

Posted on:

Philly’s very own Nothing just premiered another new eardrum-bursting track callled "Endlessly," off their forthcoming LP Guilty of Everything, over at Rolling Stone. Frontman Domenic Palermo tells the publication, "’Endlessly’ is a song about a seasick family who squeezed out a dizzy baby." (Haha…we highly doubt that they were expecting that response – way to keep Philly’s reputation for being weird intact, Nicky.) The album was produced by Uniform Recording’s Jeff Zeigler, and is coming out March 4 via Relapse Records. Nothing will begin their tour down to SXSW with a record release show on Sunday, March 2 at Kung Fu Necktie.

ICA@50 – Free For All: Mitral Transmission at Institute of Contemporary Art Feb. 19

Posted on:
Data Garden is helping the Institute of Contemporary Art kick off its ICA@50 anniversary celebration with the launch of Greg Fox’s new album Mitral Transmission. “The temporary installation and performance uses human biorhythms to generate live music.” The former drummer for Dan Deacon and Liturgy developed the technology that generates music using the organic rhythms of the human heart for his latest project. He’ll be joined by Jamey Robinson (Man Man, Buffalo Stance) on keys, while Batsley Adams provides the visuals. Guests are encouraged to try out Fox’s creation as well as Data Garden’s previous experiment with plants and sensors, used to make sounds from human-to-plant interactions, that you may have experienced at the local electronic music label/event production collective’s Switch-On Garden or Data Garden Quartet, which was on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There will be an accompanying installation entitled Personified, where you are encouraged to use the interface that was originally developed for the plants on your own body. At this evening’s event, you can also take home a print made of plantable paper, consume festive wintry snacks and refreshments, try on a virtual reality helmet, and listen to the music of your own body. Do something different tonight! Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 S. 36 St., 6:30pm – 8:30pm, Free, All Ages (Flier by Jason Killinger) – Q.D. Tran

Stream: FIM “Fast Cars”

Posted on:

Approahcing humor in songwriting is usually looked down upon, as if not taking things seriously makes you a goof in a musical climate where you’re more respected for being brooding and woundedly self-absorbed. At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss dance punk trio FIM, who willingly define themselves as extraterretrial psych rockers. Staying true to that sill descriptor, the foursome just released their most outlandish track yet, "Fast Cars", a brainy, robotic synth pop romp that is actually backed up by some considerable skill. Meaning, they take their humor seriously. It’s tempting to instantly raise the "novelty" flag, but when you’re incorporating an infectious rhythmic energy with such care there’s no reason to embrace the weirdness and let your inhibitions flow. FIM will be playing this and other songs off their latest EP "Alien Beach Party" at the Satellite on February 24.

The track is off Moon Bounce’s forthcoming EP, Dress Rehearsal, due out February 25 via Grind Select, a new imprint owned and operated by Regensberg and his manager Jeremy Garber.

Old Age Release Wildlife 2.20.2014

Posted on:

What has 8 legs, weighs half a ton and sings like John Lennon? Old Age, and they’re releasing their first full- length album, Wildlife this Thursday February 20th at Mississippi Studios.

This is a big deal for those in the know. Considering the explosion of growth Old Age has shown in both their songwriting and live performances throughout the releases of The Whale EP (2011), Ancestors (2012), and The Rain Won’t Ever Come (2013), a first full length recording is certain to blow minds. The album’s nine tracks were recorded, mixed and mastered by Adam Harney at Deep Search and Flora Studios.

The boys were rad enough to share exclusively with The Deli track 8 off of Wildlife, ‘My Prerogative.’ This is a tune I have had the pleasure of enjoying live somewhere in the double digits, but the recording is on another level. Take a listen for yourself.

Sharing the stage with Old Age Thursday night are the tremendously talented Nick Delffs (of The Shaky Hands, Death Songs and Tiburones) and Paulo Zappoli. I’ll see you there.

Review – Annie & Kate – Running Out Of Time

Posted on:

I’m guessing that teenage twins, Annie & Kate, never have time to be bored. High school is hectic enough, but somehow they manage to play ten instruments between them, write songs, and play shows left and right. If they’re this efficient now, I’m excited to see where they’ll go! The world needs more girls like Annie and Kate Brogdon, unafraid to pick up guitars and start a rock band. Their debut CD, Running Out of Time, is online to stream and its physical release is coming on the 21st at Roots Bistro in Georgetown. –Written by Marie Meyers

Chairlifts’ Caroline Polachek unveils anti-pop solo album under Ramona Lisa moniker

Posted on:

Chairlift, brainchild of singer/keyboardist/composer Caroline Polachek, has been one of our favorite NYC pop bands since they broke out back in 2008, when they graced the cover of our Best of NYC issue – those were the times of single "Bruised," blessed by an Apple ad.

Caroline is now announcing the release of a solo album – to be released on Terrible Records in April – under the moniker Ramona Lisa. Preview single and video "Arcadia" (streaming below) shows us an unexpectedly gloomy atmoshpere, so much so that we are tempted to think this is not just a parallel project, but alsmost a Chairlift antithesys – a necessary outlet of somebody who starts feeling curbed by pop music’s brightly colored straitjacket? Gone are the upbeat rhythms and the uplifting melodies, gone the meticulous and somewhat intricate production. A completely anti-pop 2 minute drumless instrumental intro guide us to the haunting vocal melody, which betrays Gregorian influences. The song is rather uneventful, like a beautiful, intimate chant that listens to itself, rather than being projected out to others. And that’s exactly what pop music is not.

We realized that Caroline had serious balls when we saw this video, this record only comes as a confirmation.

Softspot announces “MASS” LP + unveils single + plays Shea Stadium on 02.28

Posted on:

Like sailing through an indigo sky, surrounded by deep darkness that you have the power to penetrate, SoftSpot‘s sophomore record ‘MASS’ and its lead single ‘You / Yours’ (out April 8th) is full of the dramatic intensity. Architecturally transient, it swoops acrobatically through seductive guitar work and sometimes sinister drums, in a sort of dreamy but certainly never sleepy fashion, the instruments cavorting with Kinlaw’s sometimes Bjork-esque vocals. Two minutes into ‘You / Yours’ there’s a blistering culmination of all its assets, swooping grandly together to a drum dalliance before filtering down into gentle tings. Glorious. Other album highlights include the punctuated chimes of ‘Black Room Blues,’ the dual layered vocals on ‘Gathering,’ (an initially slow moving song that builds and blisters with its looping lyrics) and the garage rush of ‘Pick Up Lines,’ its ominous delicately picked bass line and Keller’s vocals adding a tense dark counterpoint to proceedings. The Bushwick trio, joined by recently permenent member Blaze Bateh play the Shea Stadium on Feb 28th and Piano’s on March 11th. – Francesca Baker

Where Is My Mind?: The Districts’ Rob Grote

Posted on:
I’ve been going back through our earlier posts about The Districts to put together the intro to this interview. It really almost feels like yesterday when I came into the old HotBox Studios to check out our first collaboration together with Lushlife for our Choice/Cuts video series. Matt Smith was excited to show me footage of an in-studio session that they did with a high school band from Central Pennsylvania. Obviously, we now know that they were The Districts, and the video was their performance of “Funeral Beds,” which eventually went viral two separate times on Reddit. Soon after, they were victorious in our bi-monthly Featured Artist(s) Poll. The band also won the hearts of our Deli editors in other cities in the Open Submissions round of our Year End Emerging Artists Poll 2012. In 2013, they spent a lot of their time winning over the Philly music community with each fiery live performance, and then came the big news that the group had signed to well-respected indie label Fat Possum Records. Since then, the floodgates have opened with offers to open for their hometown heroes Dr. Dog at the Electric Factory and tour with Austin rockers White Denim, who they are currently on the road with right now. So it wasn’t really a surprise to us, here at The Deli, when the votes came in, and The Districts unanimously became our Philly Emerging Artist of 2013. We had a chance to chat with frontman Rob Grote, before he left on tour, about the amazing experience that they had last year since moving to Philly, what’s next, and more, which you can check out HERE!
