Posted on:

Just Lions have brought in a ton support from fans in their second Deli poll (they were our Artist of the Month way back at the beginning of 2013) and have taken silver in the Best of 2013 readers’ choice poll. Their rocking, at times anthemic compositions have worked their way through most every venue in town over the past year and garnered them attention for their dynamic hooks and tight arrangement. Listen to their music below and be sure to keep an eye on them this year; it’s bound to be an exciting one for Just Lions. – Benjamin Toledo

Adam Brock Takes 3rd Place in The Deli Portland’s Best of 2013 Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

Taking third place in the readers’ choice segment of our year end poll is Adam Brock, who you may recognize as the winner of this year’s open submissions segment. His tasteful blending of indie pop, folk and electronic elements combined with the pristine production of his recordings have brought him support from the Portland music scene (as well as few choice Deli editors across the country) that continues to grow. The creativity contained within his songs may only be exceeded by his passion for the music in general, which has shown through every interaction I’ve ever had with him. Congrats, Adam, may 2014 be your most successful year yet. – Benjamin Toledo

Me Like Bees wins The Deli’s 2013 Best of KC Year End Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

Congrats to the winner of The Deli KC’s 2013 Readers’ Poll, Me Like Bees!

Me Like Bees has been making waves in the Midwest for a few years now, and has more recently found success by taking home the award for the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands competition, earning them a coveted spot on Warped Tour, a three-song EP produced by Goldfinger’s John Feldmann, and a lot of other fine swag. The four-piece Joplin group’s strongly developed indie rock sound draws comparisons to bands like The White Stripes and Modest Mouse, but Me Like Bees has cultivated its own melodic, quirky, upbeat style to stand on a national stage.

You can catch our Readers’ Poll champion in Kansas City next on Friday, February 28. Me Like Bees will be at The Riot Room with Not A Planet and The Electric Lungs. Until then, they’ll be playing a few dates in St. Louis, Columbia, and Joplin. Check out melikebees.com for more info.

Me Like Bees is:
Pete Burton – guitar, vocals
Nick Bynum – bass, vocals
Luke Sheafer – vocals, guitar,
Timothy Cote – drums, synths, vocals

Playground Etiquette release new album, The Marionnette. Show on February 7th.

Posted on:

Baltimore’s Playground Etiquette released their new album, The Marionnette, on January 18th, during a sold out show at Baltimore’s Metro Gallery. The Marionette is thrilling from start to finish, as the band absolutely nails their ambitious prog/alternative sound. It’s hard to describe them in more specific terms, as they blend all sorts of musical ideas and genres into a cohesive whole. The arrangements are complex without being overwhelming. Each song engages the listener, at times to jump around, at others to head-bang, and always to grab your nearest friend and scream “this band is awesome! Why aren’t they huge?” Don’t let them sell a show out from under you again. Playground Etiquette plays the Velvet Lounge in DC, on February 7th. –Natan Press

Where Is My Mind?: The Extraordinaires’ Matt Gibson

Posted on:
The Extraordinaires are one of those wonderfully odd acts that seem like they could only come out of Philly. And they totally kick-ass live! You’ll find their fans head-bobbing and stomping around with such genuine joy that the feeling is rather communal and infectious. The band’s camp was rather quiet in 2013 as they worked on new material in the studio and dealt with more lineup changes. Drummer Evan Smoker left the group, and was replaced by Mike Harkness (ex-Armchairs, ex-Arrah and the Ferns). However, there was the welcomed return of co-founding member Matt Gibson, who had left the band to tour with Man Man when they were on the road in support of Life Fantastic. The Extraordinaires are set to celebrate the release of their new EP Pen Pals tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, and we are happy to get a chance to talk with Gibson about his return, his time with Man Man, the band’s future plans to make a kids show, and much more HERE

Rippin’ E Brakes steer rock in new directions on self-titled album

Posted on:

From the envelope-filtered opening bass line of "Easy As Bicycles," it’s clear that Rippin’ E Brakes’s self-titled album is not a cookie cutter rock set. "Propane," despite its references to Japanese guitars and Canadian whiskey, is an ode to country music, complete with banjos and Americana guitars imported straight from the South. Later, the band honors a “Big Woman” that keeps them protected from the cops – and well fed in the meantime. On “Bailed,” the guys experiment with a funky synth and a Spanish guitar-tinged guitar solo that hints at Santana’s most popular work. With four vocalists and an endless barrel of sonic surprises, we can’t wait to hear what’s next from this New Hampshire five-piece. For now, you can check them out at the Bucket Deck at New Hampshire’s Water Valley Resort on February 8, or their Valentine’s Day set at Chen Yang Li in Concord, NH. – Jake Reed

Color War releases video for ‘SOS’

We alaways welcome good videos here at The Deli. We highlighted Brooklyn darkwave duo Color War a few weeks ago, after they announced debut album "It Could Only Be This Way," out in March. The two are actually both visual artists so it’s no surprise they came up with a stunning video for single "SOS" – check it out below.
