Brooms qualify for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (3rd place in ALT FOLK category)

Posted on:

In case you missed it, Brooms’ latest release from last year, ‘Fuzzy Waters,’ is about as close to New Orleans as you’re liable to come while still being stuck nearer to the Hudson. If lead singer Matt Cascella’s hoarse tenor doesn’t pull you in with his enchanted screams in tracks like ‘Something Happened Along the Way,’ just wait until you hear some of the brilliant orchestrations behind band mate Brett Crudgington’s horn and string arrangements (and I think I may have heard a toaster in there somewhere too) found throughout the ride. This is singer-songwriter music for fans of early Randy Newman, or late Tom Waits, operating by a simple and effective policy: just because you’re baring your soul, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun. Check out ‘Front of the Plane’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Greg Banks qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (Hip Hop/Other category)

Posted on:

Greg Banks, hailing originally from Louisiana, has been infusing the airwaves with his Big Easy sultry croon since 2007. Silky and soulful, he vacillates from a classic R n’ B lilt in “Magazine Street” to a more robust vocalization reminiscent of recent Andre3000 in “Brooklyn Girl.” There is definitely a 90’s vibe that permeates his catalogue, a nod to the New Jack Swing pioneered by Bobby Brown with hits like “My Prerogative.” The vibes of the 90’s may be making a comeback, but Greg Banks is way ahead of the curve. – Open Submissions Hip Hop category full results here. – BrokeMc

Charly Bliss release new single “Clean” + plays Muchnore on 01.12

Posted on:

The four piece band of indie pop-rockers and one of the newer additions to the local Indie scene known as Charly Bliss, take the raggedy but radiant vocals of Eva Grace Hendricks and combine them with the band’s inherent knack for tense power rock. Their newest single released and recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks last month titled “Clean” exemplifies this, with its stinging turns, distortion and catchy rhythm and lyrics. They are set to play Brooklyn’s Muchmore’s on 1/12 with Big Tusk and The Rotaries. Listen to the staggering single below! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Mohican Taking Over at KFN Jan. 7

Posted on:
Instrumental rock trio Mohican is quickly becoming a favorite in Philly among its musicians and bookers/promoters. It’s quite understandable as their emotive jams wax and wane from beautiful, airy strolls to epic crescendos. The band is getting ready to release their next album The Abuse Is Character on January 16. They’ll be taking over Kung Fu Necktie tonight when the group headlines its main stage with support from D.C.’s Myrrh Myrrh, Village and Timbers. But the night won’t end when the bands unplug because Mohican will also be hosting an after-party where they’ll be spinning tunes to keep everyone warm. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Aloud to play at Great Scott alongside Brooklyn’s Cold Blood Club

Posted on:

In advance of its fourth album, It’s Got to Be Now, set for release in April, Boston-based Aloud will take to Great Scott alongside Brooklyn’s Cold Blood Club. While the retro rock four-piece will likely debut some new material at the show, you can expect plenty of the classics as well: the band’s first three discs (and especially its most recent, Exile) were critically acclaimed by publications including Driftwood Magazine and Stereo Subversion. Eight-piece indie dance outfit Cold Blood Club will play in support of a new album as well, previewed by recent single “Down.” If you want to get a taste of Aloud’s sound before the show, check out Elmore Magazine’s premiere of the new single “A Little Bit Low” here, then check out both bands at Great Scott on January 11. – Jake Reed

Vacant Future “The Spirit of Spite”

Posted on:

Vacant Future is leading a hardcore punk invasion and their coming for your house. Vacant Future implements all the best parts of my favorite heavy genres: the aggressive downbeat in hardcore punk, thrash guitar in speed metal, and death metal vocals that make your throat sore just listening. “Spirit of Spite” is by far my favorite track off their self-titled demo. It’s the perfect mix of punk and classic speed metal in the vein of Lemmy. Like so many punk bands used to, they even have a title track song, “Future is Vacant.” That’s how you know you’re listening to real punk, right? -Michael Perry

Twin Peaks

Posted on:

Twin Peaks released a new "cassingle" late last month on Tripp Tapes, "Flavor". The band also has a 7" coming soon via Jeffery Drag Records.

They recently announced on their facebook page that they have big plans for 2014 which started with dropping out of school to pursue their music career. We will have to see as the year unfolds if that was a wise decision, but their dedication has to be admired.
