Radiator Hospital Opening for Potty Mouth at The Boot & Saddle Jan. 9

Posted on:
I first learned about the goodness of Radiator Hospital, a.k.a. Sam Cook-Parrott, when Chrissy Tashjian of Dangerous Ponies, at the time, suggested for him to be the opener for our collaborative New Year’s Eve party last year. Being an English grad and lover of lyrics, I was instantly captivated by his earnest, heartfelt words, but unfortunately, he was unable to perform at our soiree and now Dangerous Ponies is no longer a band. Well, I was really looking forward to finally getting the opportunity to experience Tashjian and Radiator Hospital on the same bill when her new garage-punk project Thin Lips, consisting of former DP bandmate Kyle Pulley and Tigers Jaw’s drummer Pat Brier, was announced as part of the lineup for tonight’s show at South Philly’s The Boot & Saddle. However, once again, the rock gods must be conspiring against me because I just saw that Thin Lips have dropped off the bill at the last minute and have been replaced by Le Yikes Surf Club. Well, the show must go on, and both local acts will be opening for buzzing Northampton, MA quartet Potty Mouth. The all-female garage-pop crew has accumulated much praise from major media outlets like Pitchfork, NPR and The New York Times for their latest release and first LP Hell Bent. It’s warming up, and I know that you are ready for a good night out! The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Magic Island take second place in New England Open Submissions

Posted on:

After being featured on our site in November, Magic Island has placed second in the Open Submissions for our Year-End Poll. This year, the band made noise with its second EP, “Falling Through Space.” Opening track ”Himalayas” is layered with texture, from harmonized vocals, icy keys and gruff guitars, while “Hang High” features groovy riffs and a sneaky-catchy chorus which finds vocalist Drew Valera singing, “I just wanna get you on your own, I don’t wanna leave you all alone.” The band is hard at work on new material, so it’s pretty certain they’ll keep up the momentum in 2014, but "Falling Through Space" is available on Bandcamp and iTunes now. – Jake Reed

Big Big Buildings places third in New England Open Submissions

Posted on:

Scoring an 8.17 in the Open Submissions portion of our year-end poll, Big Big Buildings has placed third amongst all submissions in the first round – and will be moving ahead to the Readers/Fans Poll. In June, Big Big Buildings (real name Adam McElreath) released Full Color Pharmacy, his third full-length album, and its name is a testament to the spectrum of sounds across its twelve songs. On album opener “Just Over Young,” he touches on the sonic weirdness of Animal Collective and later the sparkling guitars of post-rock giants Explosions in the Sky. “There Is A Wall” is straight-up indie rock, while “Polyhimalayan” is pure ambient, with bubbles providing texture beneath a slow, resonating keyboard melody. Check out the album on Bandcamp to hear what other colors the album is stocked with – Jake Reed

Big Ups celebrates LP release party tonight (1.9) at Shea Stadium

Posted on:

Big Ups – who played our 2012 NYC B.E.A.F. Fest – have been getting a lot of attention lately as a result of their highly anticipated and forthcoming LP titled ‘Eighteen Hours of Static’ due out on 1/13 via Dead Labour & Tough Love Records. They recently scored a much hyped review from Noisey.com, that’s currently streaming their entire album. The local punk masterminds portray a hardcore vibe of Black Flag and Kill Your Idols, fused with melodic post-punk and sort-of-indie rock verses. The LP release show (where you can snag an early copy of the record) will go down tonight at Shea Stadium, so be there if you’re into punk madness – because these guys really ARE crazy when on stage. Washer, Mannequin Pussy & Flagland are also on the bill. Listen to “Goes Black” from the upcoming LP below! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

New Track: “Patience Makes” – Bum Fashion

Posted on:

It seems like Peter Helmis has been keeping pretty busy after the breakup of Algernon Cadwallader, playing in various bands around town and starting new projects of his own. Here is his latest with Brian Baksa called Bum Fashion, whose style is befittingly lo-fi slacker rock on their first original track, "Patience Makes," which was recorded at Big Mama’s Warehouse, mixed at Headroom Studios, and mastered by Ryan Schwabe at Maniac Mansion.

The DC Rap Scene According to Javier Stark

Posted on:

If you ever wondered if Wale is the only rapper in DC, look no further than Javier’s song “Ctrl-Alt-Delete.” His music ranges from top 40 worthy to insightful. “Ctrl-Alt-Delete” is the latter. He blames the city for being “excellent at overlooking excellence.” He also attacks those who rap solely about the money they have a acquired. That theme has become a cliché, if not dishonest for those just starting out in the rap game. He is not trying to dethrone Wale as the DC rap king either. He’s just clearly frustrated by the abundant comparisons. “Don’t compare me with Wale,” he angrily raps. No one will, after they hear his fervor. Hopefully Javier will be one of the acts to raise DC rap community to the ranks of the city’s jazz and punk legacies.

The Silver Liners — New EP and shows.

Posted on:

D.C. natives, The Silver Liners, took their band name from the old adage, “Every cloud has a silver lining.” The name seems very apt these days—after losing a few original members, the band revamped their former pop rock sound and released a new EP, Bliss. The EP features electronic tracks, with synthesizer backings and distorted vocals—a much more mature sound than before. Since the release, The Silver Liners have had enormous success, receiving airtime on MTV and local radio station DC101. The Silver Liners have a show this coming Saturday, 1/11 at the Rock & Roll Hotel. — Katie Bowles
