Some may think it’s tough to compete as a vocalist in a town full of songwriters, but Tameca Jones has the rare ability to turn a cover that you’re sick of hearing into a brand new, soul squeezing work of art and people everywhere love her for it. Born and raised in Austin, this powerhouse of a vocalist often teams up with other local artists like the charming rapper, Phranchyze, and singer/soulwriter, Ray Prim. Jones shines brightest, however, when backed by her own band, running up, down, and all around familiar melodies and making them her own. See her this weekend, along with a bunch of other kick ass female fronted bands at Spiderhouse Ballroom, Saturday, January 18th. –Written by Jodi Lang
Holiday Mountain Will Make You Dance at Austin Deli’s Well-Being for Women Showcase This Saturday, January 18th
Holiday Mountain play hard. Dancing, glitter and matching neons are just a few staples that comprise the band’s energetic live show. What else would you expect from a psychedelic funk band? Holiday Mountain don’t take themselves too seriously and as a result, nobody in the audience does either; their crowds aren’t afraid to follow suit and bust a move.
Holiday Mountain plans to release new music in early 2014 and was named Austin’s No. 1 Band of 2013 by Sonic Vault. (They have also been nominated for our poll so don’t forget to vote!) Take part in the revelry this Saturday, January 18th at Austin Deli’s Well-Being for Women Showcase at Spider House Ballroom. –Written by Gillian Driscoll

Grace London Plays Austin Deli’s Well-Being for Women Showcase This Saturday, January 18th at Spider House Ballroom.
Grace London is a 14 year old singer, songwriter, guitar player and foot stomper. The Austin native writes witty lyrics reminiscent of Kate Nash and sings with drama: incorporating repetition, breathing and warbling into her delivery, like a young Merrill Garbus. London released her debut EP, Rocketship Girl, in 2012 to much acclaim (including landing a slot at 2013’s Austin City Limits Music Festival and official showcase at the 2013 & 2014 SXSW Music Festival), and plans to release a full-length in the spring of 2014.
London not only has a big voice, but a generous heart. Since 2010, the singer has used her music to raise money for causes including the GLSEN – National Safe Schools Program, and A Glimmer of Hope Foundation, to aid relief efforts in Ethiopia. This Saturday, January 18th, London sings out for women’s causes as she performs at the Austin Deli’s Well-Being for Women Showcase at Spider House Ballroom. Check out this talented young star and learn about issues affecting the women and youth in our city this Saturday. –Written by Gillian Driscoll
KC Open Submission Results for The Deli Magazine’s Year End Poll, 2013
Miss Geo, Atlantic Thrills and Mals Totem qualify for next stage of our Year-End Poll
Now that we’ve taken a closer look at the top three bands in our Open Submissions, here are the runner-ups. In fourth place is Miss Geo, an indie pop duo from Newport, Rhode Island. The pair’s song “Waves” is a groovy, fun ditty with synths lifted straight out of the 80s, and they’re preparing a new album to be released this spring.
Atlantic Thrills was the fifth place finalist. To drum up noise for their upcoming album, set for release on February 4, the band recently released the video for its single “Day at the Beach.” The song is a catchy surf rock tune and its video will have you longing for summer.
Last but not least is Mals Totem, in sixth place. The band’s self-titled EP, released in September, has its share of quiet moments, but the band is best when it’s at its loudest. For the best example, just take a listen to the driving chorus in “Gargantuan.” – Jake Reed
New Track: “The Flames” – Dan Svizeny
Dan Svizeny has been stepping out from behind his moniker Cough Cool with his most recent releases, but his signature fuzz and knack for pretty melodies still remains. You can check out his latest single, "The Flames," below, which will appear on his upcoming LP. Enjoy!
Down Dirty Shake Alamoon Style Like Revelators Buzzmutt Play Uptown in Oakland – 1/10
Are you ready for a night of ’60s influenced rock n’ roll? If so, we’ve got an event in mind! This Friday, the Uptown in Oakland will host a show with the likes of Alamoon, Down Dirty Shake, Style Like Revelators and Buzzmutt. Here’s the lowdown on the bands: Alamoon is a female-fronted psych rock project with lyrics that give nods to Jefferson Airplane, but with a contemporary twist. San Francisco based, Down Dirty Shake posesses a heavily influenced 60s soul and rock n’ roll vibe. Style Like Revelators, a fuzzed-out blues rock outfit coming from the Central Valley, plays their own style of heavy-hitting, long-form compositions. And last, but certainly not least, Buzzmutt is a psych-tinged, noise rock band hailing from San Francisco.
They’re all amazing bands with an awesome sound. If you’re up for a night of vintage rock n’ roll fun, let these bands be your guide for the night. You’ll have a great time! –Erin Dage
Featherface Releases New Single, “Ourselves Together”
With a little help from Converse Rubber Tracks, Featherface has recently released an amazing studio track to 7” vinyl. "Ourselves Together" opens with an eerie soundtrack feel, but the piano driven tune quickly evolves into a sweet sounding psych pop song adorned with beautiful harmonies. Brush back all that beautiful hair in this Houston band to reveal a carefully calculated effort at an epic new single. Then, head out to Empire Control Room on February 6th, 2014 to see them with Ghostbunny and The Sun Machine. –Written by Jodi Lang

Congratulations to Pale Cowboy for placing first in the Open Submissions for our Year-End Poll. Based out of Northampton, Mass., the five-piece band finds the happy medium between American and indie rock. 2013’s Shelter EP has all you could ask for: unpredictable chord progressions, harmonized vocals, glimmering synths that never try to steal the show, and some truly unique production – and daring tempo changes – shown off on the set’s title track. Album Review: Mujahedeen by Ali Muhareb
Local professional chiller and former bass player of Talkative, Ali Muhareb just released a solo album, Mujahedeen, and it rips. The album displays a remarkably more dynamic musical genius than was showcased in his role with Talkative, and sounds surprisingly different than his previous group to boot. Sonically resemblant to some stoned fusion of Animal Collective and Hot Chip, Mujahedeen adds a solid new layer to Portland music that contends with the best…. Read the full review here!
