Answerman experiments with garage, punk and shoegaze on “The Way You Want” EP

Posted on:

Released earlier this month, Answerman’s The Way You Want EP is a fun, short dive into the worlds of shoegaze and garage rock. The EP’s six songs are full of simple yet catchy and gripping riffs and chord progressions, with vocalist Sam Pitino’s talk-singing often filtered or muffled to become part of the instrumental rather than something shoved into the foreground. On this EP, it works: just take a listen to “Pie Eater Starfish.” The Way You Want has its surprises as well, such as the grinding guitars that drop on slowed-down track “Bad Arm” and the dinky drum machine tick on the final bridge of “Fall.” – Jake Reed

iiii ends 2013 on a high note

Posted on:

iiii (pronounced “four”) capped off 2013 with two releases: its self-titled debut album in November and the EP Run iiii Cover in December. The group’s brand of R&B is breezy, jazzy and fun, carried by Laila Smith’s smooth, skillful voice. “Sweet Talk,” from its December EP, will have you dancing without even realizing it – jumpy piano and jittery drums give the song an effortless, inescapable groove. If you’re in the mood for something slower, check out the ballad “A Case of You,” wherein Smith sings, “I could drink a case of you, darling, and I’d still be on my feet.” On the other hand, if you like the classics, download closing track “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which the band makes its own with the help of time signature changes and an extra dose of upright bass. – Jake Reed

Spirit Animal wins The Deli’s Year End Poll ALT ROCK Open Submissions

Posted on:

Spirit Animal breaks out on their latest fun filled party anthem record with ‘The Black Jack White’ (streaming). We wish this would have came out in the summer because it’s begging to be blasted out of our windows. In the 4 track EP Kingdom Phylum, it’s sometimes funky and always fun. We wouldn’t be surprised if Beck (Midnight Vultures era) is the king of this realm, and Alexis Krauss (Sleigh Bells) is the Queen – but Spirit Animal are definitely the party makers.
You can join in on the fun and pledge your lineage to their kingdom, and maybe even find your own Spirit Animal in the process on January 31st @ Webster Hall. – Joe Fish

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: The Cartwheelers

Posted on:

There’s nothing wrong with a little fun right? There could be worse reasons to love the music we do, and The Cartwheelers already know this about you. And expressly for this purpose: this Jersey punk duo for their latest EP ‘Hot Socks! It’s… The Cartwheelers’ have compiled the fastest set of party tracks we’ve heard in awhile.

From a friend’s attempt to hide his heroin habit (‘Heroin’), to losing money to sketchy characters (‘Loan Shark’), this band may deal with the some uncommon situation (although we all have occasional money issues), but for them… it’s just another part of life’s bizarre, crazy, and very weird journey. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: Todd Kramer

Posted on:

Meet Todd Kramer: one part country, one part singer/songwriter, and one part blue-eyed heartbreaker. Though it seems all he can sing about these days is the damage done to his own heart.

New EP ‘One Pair of Eyes’ carries a torch for broken hearts everywhere in songs like ‘Empty Cup’ and ‘Numb.’ Honest expressions of what it’s like to lose someone you’re close to, but Todd’s also ready to turn up the knobs and let a burning guitar solo rip through whatever’s troubling you too. Check out closer ‘Redeye’ for more on that. Listen below and check him out January 16th when he plays at Sidewalk Cafe. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Connan Mockisan Disappearing People Faux Canada Play Bottom of the Hill – 1/15

Posted on:

Are you yearning to see an awesome psych rock show this week?? This Wednesday, Bay Area darlings Disappearing People and Faux Canada will be joining New Zealand psych-pop act Connan Mockisan at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. Opening the show is indie-pop trio, Faux Canada, who embrace synthesizers and give an electronic update to indie rock bands of yore. Oakland’s duo, Disappearing People will change the pace of the show, blending elements of psych-rock and fuzzed-out lo-fi music to create durational musical compositions. This band is nothing short of trippy. And last but not least, there’s the headliner Connan Mockisan who has made it to California from across the pond. Mockisan crafts slowly building, twee-like, psych-pop. The artist has been making waves with his most recent album, Caramel. That said, catch Mockisan before he flees the states! –Erin Dage
