Album Review: St. Even

Posted on:

The eponymous album by St. Even may be your perfect solution to enduring the gray, rainy days of winter. It breathes the type of nostalgia that reminds you that with the right musical remedies, lazy days are the best thing about cold weather. The songs on this sophomore album are full of instrumental arrangements that are put together in orchestral fashion and all tied together with an acoustic guitar. St. Even’s voice carries a storyteller’s tone and the music behind it moves around in beautiful whimsy. It’s a combination of Greenwich Village folk and Fantasia making sounds extremely fitting to the Portland landscape.

The album starts out reminiscent of the various folk songs of the Magnetic Fields, complete with horn and string sections that move slowly into the music behind his vocal build ups. You can hear a variety of instruments such as trumpet, trombone, violin and piano. About midway through on the song “Really Real” beautiful female vocals shine through while melodic piano riffs dance in the background. And the piano keeps going on the bluesy track, “Don’t Hold Your Breath” while the words are sung like a Southern ballad.

In the end, all these songs are cultivated with folk roots and brought together with eloquent and classic songwriting. The music is perfect fitting for any kind of day, but especially nice with a warm cup of coffee on cold morning. – Colin Hudson

Blank Paper wins The Deli NYC’s Year End Poll ELECTRONIC Open Submissions

Posted on:

When I first heard synth pop quartet Blank Paper, the first thing to cross my mind was: this is a band that knows the value of deep sleep. With tracks like ‘Tape Dreams’ and ‘Wishing Well’ off their last EP, this quartet awakens a wide sonic palette, all while sleepwalking through lucid lyrics fitting perfectly with the record sleeve’s giant, fold-out unicorns. New song ‘Ambien’ revels in this state of unconsciousness, when singer Marie Kim pleads repeatedly with you to do whatever you want, just don’t wake her up. Perhaps the band’s catchiest track to date, the song asks for somnambulance, while synthesizing one of the group’s more urgent sounding synth-pop jams yet. Check it out below, and see them plug in their keyboards live when they play at Music Hall of Williamsburg on January 17th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Electronic songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

WHAT’S NEXT: Now that the first stage of the poll has come to a close, the next step is to unveil the artists nominated by our local jurors: venue promoters, bloggers, etc. (In other words, the people who know the scene best.) Then, our readers and writers will get a chance to vote on the poll.

A big thanks again to all of the bands who submitted their music. We hope to see you all continue to write the music that makes Bay Area such a rich and diverse local scene.

Late Cambrian qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (4th place in ALT ROCK category)

Posted on:

Anyone with reservations about how awesome this year is going to be, need look no further than Late Cambrian. A band that needs no convincing of how great things are. From the crashing rock theatrics of ‘Ryan Gosling,’ to the dance-ready ‘The Year I Cut The Cable,’ the good times are here right now… and dammit… they’re here to stay. Think of a much more optimistic Strokes, or a less French Phoenix, and you’re close to the sound of this excitable trio. Late Cambrian is all this and more, and just might make you smile too. Check out their popular track from Converse Rubber Tracks, ‘Walk of Shame,’ below. Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

New Music Video: “Loot My Body” – Man Man

Posted on:

Man Man just premiered a new lyrics music video over at The A.V. Club for the track "Loot My Body," which contains a lot of great tour footage. They’ll also be heading on the road again soon keeping them quite busy through February. Unfortunately, no Philly dates on the schedule yet which isn’t surprising since they already did a two-night run for Halloween at Union Transfer followed by a more intimate show at Underground Arts on their last trek around the country in support of their most excellent LP On Oni Pond.

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: Sri

Posted on:

There’s a big world out there waiting for you, and I can’t think of a better way to start exploring it, than by throwing on Sri‘s latest song ‘That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate,’ a Mission of Burma cover, evokes a lost world of possibilities, that Sri’s hauntingly crisp vocals make clearer than I’ve heard the track done before. Check it out below and get lost in her world yourself.

Eternal Summers releases new single “Gouge”

Posted on:

Roanoke’s celebrated Eternal Summers are preparing to release their fourth album, The Drop Beneath (on Kanine Records), and their first since 2012. The “dream punk” trio has provided the world with the single “Gouge,” a synth-poppy rocker reminiscent of the Cure, with Nicole Yun’s delightful voice, and the aggressive yet dreamy guitars that are Eternal Summers’ hallmark. The Drop Beneath will be released on March 4, 2014. –Natan Press

New Track: “American Dreamless” – Ryshon Jones

Posted on:

This weather has us feeling a little doom and gloom today so Ryshon Jones‘ new single "American Dreamless" is helping us to relieve some that angst. Or maybe it’s making us feel worse. Either way, it’s a standout from the local spitter’s latest fifteen-track release Hope Is A Dangerous Thing, which you can download for free HERE.

Chicago

North By North @ Empty Bottle

Posted on:

North By North is Nate Girard (Guitar/Vocals), Kendra Blank (Keys), and Dylan Andrews (Drums). This trio is releasing a very ambitious debut double LP called Something Wicked. The album is ambitious not just because it is a double LP, but because of the incredible storytelling and massive rock sound. An easy comparison is to early White Strips, but there is more depth to the writing and a little more fury to the sound.

You help celebrate the release of Something Wicked at Empty Bottle on January 23rd.

Okapi

Posted on:

Consisting of cello, bass, percussion and vocal, Okapi is presenting a sound they are calling post-chamber. The trio released their debut self-titled EP this week, and it is available for whatever you willing to pay. The overall feel of the EP is slightly on the dark side, but that is mostly related to the deep sound of the instruments and the hushed vocals of Scott Gorski. Overall it is a refreshing look at composition making Okapi a band to watch this year.
