Dear Georgiana Wins the Deli NYC’s Year End Poll SONGWRITER Open Submissions
One-half 1960s confectionary pop, one-half folk whimsy, Dear Georgiana’s debut record just might be one of the best albums of the year. With a voice sure to possess you, placed on top a facade of candy-coated pop fun, it’s no wonder she’s won Deli Mag’s open submissions for the songwriter category this year. Check out her single ‘I Wanna Be In Love’ below, and fall in love with Brooklyn-by-Alabama songwriter Lauren Balthrop yourself. Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

Top Bands from the Year End Open Submission
I was excited to see so many local bands that I love had submitted their music to be reviewed for our Year End Poll (see right), but what excited me even more was seeing who came out on top once the reviewing process was over (see here for more details on the reviewing process). The post-indie stylings of Rare Monk, hook driven songs written by Just Lions, progressive musical experiments conducted by Sama Dams and the dreamscapes that only Soft Shadows can create deserve inclusion in our Best of 2013 list as much as any band nominated by our jurors. Be sure to check these bands out and vote for your favorites here. – Benjamin Toledo
The Verner Pantons at Club 21 1.18
The Verner Pantons play with a style that’s rooted in ‘60s psychedelia, venturing through fluid compositions to make the sonic splashes that can be heard on their debut EP, Melancholy Girl. Each song on the release has a different flavor; from the reverberating hooks complemented by driving beats on the title track to the surfy lead lines and lo-fi spanish vocals on the closing track, “Dejame”. The EP is well worth a few listens, as would be catching these guys live at Club 21 this weekend for a free show with Psychomagic and Hollow Sidewalks. Be there for a most rocking psychedelic party. – Benjamin Toledo
New Video: “City Lights” (Acoustic) – The Hundred Acre Woods
We’ve shared plenty of words with you lately about The Hundred Acre Woods so here’s an acoustic performance of "City Lights," one of our favorites from their new EP Cold In The Morning, which is now available on vinyl via Lame-O Records. It was recorded in their van by Table Three Media, and should be a nice warm-up for the band’s release show this evening at Golden Tea House with Alex G, SHMNS, I Kill Giants, and Au Revoir.
Volutes
Volutes is the work the of Christina Dennaoui. She recently released her new EP, Elegant Grey. The album is dedicated to her mother who recently passed, and it is a beautiful, elegant, and at times haunting album. Dennaoui uses an array of sounds and samples to create an intimate but ever expanding universe of sound. These are tightly packed slow jams custom build for your inner ear and your inner self.
New Music Video: “I Hate Change” – Tender Vision
With all the drama happening at the bass position and the output of subpar new tunes, you are probably thinking like we are. What the fuck happened to the Pixies? Well, here’s an adorable little ditty from ex-Catnaps frontwoman Adrianne Gold and bassist William Sallee’s new project Tender Vision called "I Hate Change," which might help express how you are feeling into song. "I hate change. Kim, why did you leave me? I miss the Pixies." Tender Vision are currently working on their debut album entitled "Trust Lust."
Soft Speaker @ Beat Kitchen
Just before the holiday Soft Speaker dropped a new free EP called Blown From The Road. It features remixes of the song "Blown From The Road" by Cian Ciaran of Super Furry Animals and The Warmth.
Soft Speaker will make their 2014 stage debut at Beat Kitchen on Saturday, January 18th, with Indiana-based Cooked Books and Sleeping Bag.
Briar Rabbit “From Your Bones”
Briar Rabbit (aka Phillip-Michael Scales) is releasing his new LP, From Your Bones, on January 21st. The albums is thoughtful, introspective, and beautifully played "Thought-Pop". The album’s first single is called "So Long" and is an upbeat (in melody) croon about escaping the ghosts of life and looking forward to better times. It is a fitting track for the New Year and a sign that there a big things ahead for Briar Rabbit.
You can catch Briar Rabbit at Martyrs’ on January 25th with Julia Klee & The Dirty Pigeons.
Stream: Bart Davenport “Wearing the Changes”
Singer/songwriter Bart Davenport has always been a man of many faces. Having dabbled with different kinds of projects throughout the years, the Bay Area crooner finally decided to settle in LA under the command of his bass player Jessica Espeleta, and discovered a newfound reverence for West coast pop with a tinge of soulful exuberance. "Wearing the Changes", from his upcoming full-length Physical World, is a sleek, lurid jam with a ’60s pop fixation that highlights the uptempo feel of northern soul (jangle arrangements brought to you by Dream Boys member Wayne Faler), its lively chords beating at an unhurried, steady pace. This is tuneful pop of the highest order, handled with a sophistication and ease that, at least for three minutes, sets back the clock into the golden days of AM pop radio. Physical World is out on March 4 via Burger Records/Lovemonk. – Juan Rodríguez
