Kodacrome qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (3rd place in ELECTRONIC category)

Posted on:

Named after one of the first successful color processes in photographic history (Kodachrome – with an h – is the term Kodak originated form), Brooklyn-based Kodacrome‘s first video ("Strike the Gold") soundtracks a young female riding horseback in half-speed, matching each step with a kind of dreaminess that defies modern digital rapidity, even as it embraces its cool. Recalling ’90s band Everything But the Girl, whose lazy house music backdrop gave techno something of a folk air, Kodachrome employs all the twitchiness of dubstep without losing any of the casual elements that Elissa Pociask’s vocals so boldly evoke. Five-song "Perla" EP dropped in ’13 to similarly stunning results – check out opener "The Bug," also streaming here. – Brian Chidester

PUSHMETHOD qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (3rd place in ALT ROCK category)

Posted on:

Since we are now witnessing a Brooklyn grunge/90s guitar rock revival, I guess a funk/rap-rock revival was to be expected since the original genre had its climax during those same years in the early 90s with the release of Rage Against The Machine’s debut album and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ "Blood Sugar Sex Magic."

NYC’s PUSHMETHOD brings the genre to new frontiers by effortlessly combining virtually every contemporary style of music into each song, from blues to metal to hip hop (check out the streaming single "Box Me Up"). A band that is sure to turn many heads (teen ones in particular) in the very near future with a wide variety of talent, it seems their destiny is truly in their own hands. They’re also not a afraid to throw a ballad in for good measure. – Joe Fish

The Prophet Nathan is Nashville’s contribution to math rock, cranking out razor sharp tunes with fascinating song structures. “Musicmol” is off of their November 2013 release “Secret Teachings.”

Radiator Greys to Play Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar on January 18th.

Posted on:

Ambient music feels like you’re either floating or drowning in the chords. The slowed down reverberations (often miscateogrized as "minimalist") are usually unsettlingly beautiful. Don’t believe me? Listen to Justin Bieber’s "U Smile" slowed down by 800%. It will make you a Belieber. Josh Levi’s solo project Radiator Greys takes the genre’s ethereal nature and runs it through a horror movie soundtrack machine. Shrouded behind a dark veil of hair he churns out, what he dubs, "experimental noise." Not necessarily something you can float to, but it is easy to drown in. You can check him out and his haunted music on Saturday, January 18th, at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar. –Alexandra Noghaven

Storyman Wins the Deli NYC’s Year End Poll SONGWRITER Open Submissions

Posted on:

It take a special kind of craziness for a band to reach a certain level of success, only to then completely reinvent their sound and style entirely. For Storyman, they’ve been remaking themselves ever since moving to NYC from Ireland several years back. Now they’ve moved from the folk purity of their older unit (Guggenheim Grotto), to the kitchen sink of pop-tastic noise and fireworks of latest incarnation: Storyman. Yes, these guys are still the intimate singer-songwriters they’ve always been, but now they’re unafraid to let everyone join the party: from pounding drum machines, to rocktastic ukulele parts.

For a band that’s been together now for 15 years, Storyman is just getting started. Watch their video to ‘Coming Home’ below and see the city through bizarre cue cards… and a special guest appearance from Chewbacca. Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Album of the Month: Sleepy Kitty

Posted on:

Sleepy Kitty’s sophomore album, Projection Room, is wonderfully adventurous release from this talented duo. As a front woman Paige Brubeck proves that she has ability to wrap her vocals around a wide array sounds and styles. From the piano pop of "What Are You Gonna Do When You Find Bigfoot?" to the slow strut of "Batman: The Ride" to the driving garage sounds of "Nothing = You" Brubeck shines.

Providing the rhythmic backbone through is the other half of this duo, former Bound Stems drummer Evan Sult. Also a former member of Harvey Danger, Sult is a vet and consistently lays a steady and interesting foundation for Brubeck. The duo while Brubeck was attending the Art Institute and playing with Stiletto Attack. Since then the two have combined to create amazing music, art and more.

You can catch Sleepy Kitty @ Township to celebrate the release of Projection Room on Jan. 18th.

Sentry unleashes split release with Thera Roya

Posted on:

On the two new tracks from its split release with Thera Roya, Sentry explores the boundaries of psychedelic rock. The band’s three members share vocal duties on the new songs, recorded at Brickhouse Studios in Brooklyn, as well. “Diamond White” begins with a dissonant riff that cuts like a knife and drums fit for a rap album before moving into a messy (in the best way) chorus. The track is capped off by a high-energy guitar solo that falls far into the red – again, to the best possible effect. “Torches” is another loud number best heard when blasted through car speakers and, if you can bear the cold, the windows rolled down. The full release includes two songs by New Yorkers Thera Roya as well, including a cover of “Money” by Pink Floyd. Take a listen on Bandcamp now. – Jake Reed
