New Music Video: “Hot Dad Calendar” – Cayetana

Posted on:

To honor Martin Luther King Jr. yesterday, we took the day off from writing about music to help out with a little painting so forgive us for still playing catch up. Now, we already knew Cayetana‘s "Hot Dad Calendar" is a helluva catchy tune with an absolutely rad song title, but the South Philly power trio really brings you into the party with their new music video for the single. This has been on serious repeat. Why? Simply – it makes us feel young and alive, which is obviously a good thing. Cayetana are supposed to be kicking off their mini-tour with Waxahatchee and All Dogs tonight at The Mercury Lounge in NYC, but we’ll see if the weather allows that to happen. The tour will be closing out in Philly this Sunday, January 26 at the First Unitarian Church. (Photo by Mary Ferrigno)

Whiite Walls Runner-Up in The Deli’s 2013 Best of Austin Year End Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

Dedicated to making the people dance, four-piece disco outfit, Whiite Walls, finished in the top three of our Best of 2013 Readers’ Poll. They played in some great company last year and I can only see them gaining momentum going into 2014; they’ve got an EP coming any day now. If its tracks are anything like the jangly, slick-beat demos they’ve put out so far, the release is sure to keep you boogying wherever you choose to spin it. You can get the full experience on the 24th, when they’ll play The Parish in support of The Black & White Years’ CD release. –Written by Marie Meyers

Isaiah The Mosaic Runner-Up On The Deli’s 2013 Best of Austin Year End Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

Psychedelic space rockers Isaiah The Mosaic blew Austin’s mind this past year. The proof? They landed second place on the Deli’s 2013 Best of Austin Year End Readers’ Poll. The five-piece build atmospheric soundscapes paired with pensive vocals to create a sound that’s as dreamy as it is trippy. Isaiah The Mosaic plan to record a full-length album with Danny Reisch (White Denim, Okkerville River, What Made Milwaukee Famous) this year, so stay tuned for more space anthems from these rockers. Before that, catch them building on the buzz at SXSW. –Written by Gillian Driscoll

Album Review: Seventeen Evergreen – Steady On, Scientist! + New Live Show Dates and Music

Posted on:

Seventeen Evergreen – the name just flows from the tongue and flits away leaving a smile on your stereo’s face. SF based duo Caleb Pate and Nephi Evans have returned to the scene with a follow-up to their 2007 debut, and it certainly does not disappoint. The 2012 release, “Steady On, Scientist!” features eight tracks ranging in sound from something you’d hear reverberating and rattling a hardwood dance floor, to a perfect backing track for star-gazing. "President Clavioline" leads with an upbeat, intricate drum and bass vibe while the vocals bellow like anti folk prince, Adam Green. The next track, "Wasting Time/Castlefield" mellows out but still entertains with a trancy beat that tells a story from underneath a light show. "Fluorescent Kind" sounds like exactly what the title promises, beginning with vocals that sound straight out of Apollo 13 (minus any system failures) that smoothly transitions to an alien discotheque style, where poetic lyrics take over…. “Steady On, Scientist!” is an instant staple for any experimental music collection. –Kat Collins

NYC Artists on the rise: Niia’s mellow, dreamy soul

Posted on:

Former Jazz singer Niia has gone from singing torch songs, to singing soul jams about burning. The latest video for ‘Generation Blue’ shows the artist igniting an otherwise slow and dreamy work into an explosion of well-chosen instruments (produced by Hannibal), complete with all the strings and guitar bends you’ve ever wanted to hear, and tastefully placed beneath Niia’s ghostly alto. Taken from her forthcoming record, the song takes a cosmic dreamworld and makes it your daily paper’s headline. Check it out below, and see a live version of it here. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Big Ass Boombox Portland 1.24-25

Posted on:

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired of waiting for summer to catch loads of rad live music? Beat your boredom this winter busting a move at Big Ass Boombox Portland, which is back with it’s third bringing of bodacious bands and brainy wordsters. This free, two-day festival takes place at five venues downtown (including two all ages venues) and features 40 local bands and 15 litterateurs.

As always, young Jedi, you must choose your own adventure, but here is my tentative agenda for the weekend.

Friday, January 24

Start at the Ash Street Saloon for Hands In at 10:30 pm followed by The Autonomics, then split over to Dante’s to catch some of The No Tomorrow Boys all killer no filler antics at 11:30 pm. Next I’ll either stick around Dante’s for Adventure Galley or head back to Ash Street for Psychomagic, depending on how the substances of the evening grab a hold of me.

Saturday, January 25

This night will get a little weird. Start out at Slabtown (all ages) with The Century at 9:30. Next I’ll head to Ash Street for Coma Serfs at 10:45 pm, then stroll to Kelly’s Olympian for Summer Cannibals at 11:30 pm. For the highlight of the night, I’ll make my way back to Ash Street to watch Old Age at 12:15 am.

Your journey through Big Ass Boom Box may be entirely different than mine. Take a look at the schedule of shenanigans to decide for yourself how you plan to spend the weekend. But don’t be a dummy and not go out, after this it’s back to waiting for summer. – Travis Leipzig

Salamanders “Super Demos”

Posted on:

Although I haven’t heard Salamanders’ name around town lately, I know there still sneaking around somewhere, which is why you should check out their EP "Super Demos" and spam them with fan mail about playing a show again soon. The four-track release is a laid back mix of rock, pop, and doo-wop that seems to care about little except for having fun. The standout track off the EP, “Gotta Get A Hold of Myself,” is a nod to early rock’n’roll doo-wop that your Dad used to really like. In its entirety, Super Demos is an album that you can just put on and let it play through without worrying about picking songs. Hopefully those elusive slimers find their way out from under the deck soon. -Michael Perry

The Cool Kids are Back!

Sir Michael Rocks also released a video for "Memo" from his upcoming solo project Banco. It looks like 2014 is going to be the year of The Cool Kids.

Cassandra Jenkins qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s final stage (4th place in ALT FOLK category)

Posted on:

It starts with a crashing cymbal and ends with moonlight twinkle. In between we find a gentle halcyonic rolling wash of guitar and precise yet eerie keys, perfectly placed percussion dissipating into Cassandra Jenkins‘ bittersweet tones that tell tales of a queen and a king that seem somewhat disillusioned but tinted with hopefulness. There’s a langour to precedings, at least to start with, before a teasing frivolity and back and forth gasping vocal scales. "Rabbit" (streaming below) has just the right amount of production at the touch of co-writer Sam Griffin Owens of Celestial Shore.

The song is dedicated to Jenkins’ goddaughter in memory of her parents’ now deceased pet rabbit, and comes with the following note: ‘After Rabbit passed away in 2004, her body was sent to North Carolina to the teenage taxidermist, Amy Ritchie. She returned to New York beautifully preserved with one peculiar detail. On one side of her face she bears a neutral expression, and on the other a beguiling smile.’

Recognition came in the form of playing bass in Eleanor Friedberger’s band, but solo talent will carry Miss Jenkins far. Catch her at Glasslands on tonight) January 20th.

Leverage Models qualifies for The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s Open Submissions (4th place in ELECTRONIC category)

Posted on:

Former Stars Like Fleas leader Shannon Fields took off for Cooperstown, NY in 2008 following his band’s final folk freakfest, "The Ken Burns Effect." A self-titled debut by his new act, Leverage Models, marks Fields’ return to NYC and the beginning of a second act. Channeling the spirit of soaring ’80s synthpop by OMD, Tears for Fears and David Bowie from the "Let’s Dance" years, the album boasts ten tracks of crisp production, featuring guest appearances by Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle and BK darling Sharon Van Etten on vocals. The album’s tapestry of retro soundscapes and cryptic lyrical sentiments is quite unique in the current musical landscape, something that sure got Pitchfork’s critical juices flowing.- Brian Chidester
