We’d like to introduce you to a new band called Local Onlys, and their debut EP Half Birthday, which you can stream below and download for free via LIPS Records. Their sound is a mix of multiple influences, but we’re really picking up on their Elvis Costello/Black Lips vibe. And of course, we love their name. The group is made up of La Salle University students Mark Lynch, Julie Gutekunst, and Jacob Smolinski, who began jamming together in the school’s chapel, where they also partially recorded their record. See – take advantage of all the perks of being in college, y’all, and get involved!
Silver Snakes announce debut album Year of the Snake
Post-hardcore quartet Silver Snakes are one of the most exciting recent signees to Bridge 9 Records, a band that combines a driving guitar sound with pummeling aggression and heartfelt yet fraught vocal dynamics. Though their beginnings had more of a metalcore slant, the songs featured in their just announced debut full-length, Year of the Snake (out of March 4th), promise to feature a darker, grittier approach. There still hasn’t been an official single released yet, but judging by a demo they shared on their soundcloud page just a week ago, Secare, it seems as if they’ll be embracing a furious, gruff tone with a slight modern rock tinge that finds a middle point between Unwound and A Perfect Circle. As they prepare for the release of the album, they’re heading out on tour for the next few months, including a stop at The Lyric Theater on January 25th. – Juan Rodríguez
DSTVV Share a Bill with DCTV and Tommy Dietrick of Sky Parady Tonight at El Rio
Local San Francisco trio DSTVV dub themselves as "grungegaze" among many, many other things. With hollow-sounding, subdued vocals layered over powerful, industrial riffs, they have developed an eclectic and almost eccentric sound. Such sounds can be heard on their latest EP, Underground Product (Wormhole Records).
When people usually think of Los Angeles based French-American post-punk trio DTCV, they think of Guided By Voices, simply because the former Guided By Voices bassist James Greer is a member of this band. DTCV, as an agent separate from GBV, and offers airy pop-infused post-punk tunes. Greer, sharing vocal responsibilities with the multi-talented Guylaine Vivarat, both differ in vocal stylings. While Vivarat’s voice can be compared to Debbie Harry of Blondie, Greer maintains rougher monotone vocal stylings, and trading off responsibilities has proved effective in their latest full length album, Hilarious Heaven (Xemu Records).
For those interested in catching DTCV, DSTVV and a solo set from Tommy Dietrick of Sky Parade, they’ll be playing TONIGHT at the El Rio in San Francisco. –Erin Dage
I Love Rich “Respect The Rich”
I Love Rich walks the thin line between pure glam rock and faux or mock rock. Regardless of if their desire to "save rock ‘n roll" is genuine or a joke, the 8 tracks of the and’s new album "Respect The Rich" truly do rock. It’s title like "If You Don’t Take Your Clothes Off, Tonight’s Gonna Suck" and "(You’re So Hot) I’m Gonna F*** you with the Lights on" that make you wonder if you are in on the joke or being mocked for banging your head and pumping your fist.
Dot Dash to perform 2/1 @ Comet Ping Pong (with Russian ballet dancers).
DC super-group Dot Dash (ex Julie Ocean, Youth Brigade, The Saturday People, Minor Threat, etc.) will be playing a show at Comet Ping Pong on February 1st. Dot Dash describe themselves as “post-punk pop,” combining and contrasting familiar “alternative” elements– melodic and dissonant, sharp and jangly, stern and whimsical—in earworm after engaging earworm. They will be joined on the bill by History Repeated (ex Government Issue) and a band from Russia called The Gumbas, who are described as “a band featuring professional male Russian Ballet Dancers from the world famous Mariinsky Ballet Company, who will also be performing earlier in the evening in Swan Lake at the Kennedy Center Opera House.” I’m intrigued. –Natan Press

Tuesday Tune-Out w/Olive Drab & Smoother at PhilaMOCA Jan. 21
While this current gentle snowfall is lulling us to believe performances won’t be cancelled tonight, I don’t really think that will remain true, but we’ve seen stranger things happen at PhilaMOCA. In a "show must go on" attitude, DIY PHL will be presenting another Tuesday Tune-Out this evening with Ruben Anree’ Polo as the guest curator. His featured acts will be Olive Drab [and if you just look up a bit at the top of our page, you’ll see that they are our current Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner], and headlining the bill will be loud pop-punk four-piece Smoother, who just released their debut album Guys Till We Die last month. A hint to the film that is planned to be screened this evening is a video of R Kelly’s "I Believe I Can Fly." Could another showing of Michael Jordan’s Space Jam be happening at PhilaMOCA? Well, here is a list of other movies that the song has appeared in as well: Drumline, Ice age: The Meltdown, Fun with Dick and Jane, and The Hangover: Part III. Teen Girl Scientist Monthly releases ‘We Run With Gangs’ album at Mercury on 01.27
When walking through New York City, the one thing you notice is the variety of people, places and things. As you walk down the city streets you’ll pass many different stores, restaurants, parks, personalities, and landmarks with various purposes, influences and flavors. Teen Girl Scientist Monthly is a 6-piece group from Brooklyn that embodies this essence. When popping on their new album ‘We Run With Gangs‘ each track jumps through various vibes, instrumentation, and styles all while keeping the same rock presence. They even shift vocalist from female to male leads on most tracks, which highlights this group’s multifaceted personality.
While they’ve been described as "Ra Ra Riot and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah making out in the bathroom" we are closely reminded of the band Enon, who also had very distinct stylistic changes throughout their records. Join the party at their release show on January 27th at Mercury Lounge. – Joe Fish
Animals and Shapes spread well wishes on latest album
Are you missing As Tall As Lions since the band parted ways in 2010? Then take a listen to Salisbury, Mass.’s Animals and Shapes. With spacey guitars and radio-ready vocal hooks, the band certainly takes a few cues from the former Long Island indie rockers. It’s clear that the sound has connected with fans: Animals and Shapes is now in the running for The Deli New England’s Best Emerging Artist of 2013. For first-time listeners, we suggest the jazzy “Ghosts in the House” or “Numbers,” which comes complete with a synth-aided bridge colossal enough to fill an arena. – Jake Reed
Zula wins The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s Open Submissions (PSYCH ROCK/DREAM POP category)
We gave Brooklyn based psych pop band Zula quite a lot of attention recently in this blog and we are glad to see that our non-NYC editors agree in seeing potential in this band. The quartet was voted by our editors as the best Psych Rock/Dream Pop artist to submit to our year end Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists. This is a band that’s been churning out a lot of good material in the past two years, and the new album "This Hopeful" released in the fall of 2013 under Inflated Record’s wing shows a reached maturity. Check out beautiful dream pop single NRGZ streaming below, and see them live at Shea Stadium on January 30 and at Baby’s All Right on 02.06.
