Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Austin Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Austin Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it of with remarkable flair! Kudos to Holiday Mountain for winning it!

First, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Austin scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Austin produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Such Hounds win The Deli’s Best of NYC 2013 Poll’s Open Submissions (FOLK ROCK/AMERICANA category)

Posted on:

We are all looking forward to warmer weather on days like today, but rock Americana quartet Such Hounds has a few reservations about the coming Summer season they’d like to share on their latest EP ‘I Hate Summer.’ Compared to their previous self-titled EP, their latest record has a welcome sense of urgency ready to shit-kick any barn-raising party into high-gear (assuming you attend barn-raising parties of course). Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good old-fashioned heartland rock jams, whether you hate the summer or not. Check out their single "Sold My Soul" below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best Rootsy songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Review – My Russian Princess

Posted on:

My Russian Princess create charming, upbeat pop songs filled with soaring harmonies, mellifluous whistles and discerning violin. Fronted by Meggan Carney, the singer/songwriter has a knack for stringing words together in an evocative way. From the sweet ballad “Green Winter Love” to the howling “Nautica”, My Russian Princess is royally talented. Check them out at one of the many shows they regularly play around Austin. –Written by Gillian Driscoll

I Kill Giants takes big step with last show

Posted on:

As we reported last month, Boston hardcore math rockers I Kill Giants embarked on their final tour in December. For its last show, the band will return to the Democracy Center in Cambridge this Friday, and they won’t be alone. The band will celebrate with Old Gray, the Hotel Year, Everything Ever and Fall Risk. Hailing from New Hampshire, Old Gray is a screamo/punk band that’s gained a national (and international) following since forming in 2011. Worcester-based The Hotel Year has a similarly rough-around-the-edges sound and a new album, "Home, Like Noplace Is There," coming out in February. Everything Ever, from Staten Island, plays an energetic blend of indie rock and pop punk, and Boston’s own Fall Risk describes its genre as "heartfelt frustrated punk." Witness the end of an era and a great night of music beginning January 24 at 7 p.m. – Jake Reed

The Last Bison: Third Place in The Deli’s 2013 Best of DC Area’s Year End Readers’ Poll

Posted on:

The Last Bison are authentic “mountain top chamber” indie-folk. The seven member band is comprised of family and friends from southeastern Virginia, thrilling audiences with their live shows as did the country troubadours of a past century, and moving modern listeners on record. While similar bands have been successful in the mainstream, The Last Bison have an original edge, representing the musical history and community of Virginia. Check out their video for Setting Our Tables below.

New Track: “Bent Nail” – Nothing

Posted on:

Check out heavy, nihilistic shoegazers Nothing‘s new single "Bent Nail"! It popped up on the internet earlier today, but was then mysteriously pulled down. Now, we know why. The track just reappeared as a Fader premiere. It’s off the band’s forthcoming album Guilty of Everything, due out March 4 via Relapse Records. You can catch them live on Sunday, February 2 at The Boot & Saddle co-headling with Whirr.

Urban Wildlife Record Release at the Secret Society 1.24

Posted on:

After nearly a year of developing and growing as a band, Urban Wildlife is ready to release the latest incarnation of their fluorescent indie-folk stylings, a record by the name of Strangers. The eight tracks within carry an emotional depth portrayed through poetic lyricism, swelling instrumentation and Emily Logan’s unwavering vocal melodies. Songs like “Alchemy” and “Salton Sea” descend upon the listener like a fog, with an ethereal air that surrounds their dynamic arrangements. Warm and tranquil sounds produced by “Witchcraft” and the melodic builds of “The Merchant” show the range of Urban Wildlife’s style, which seems to run parallel the range of a human experience. The extremes on either side of their musical spectrum are stitched together by various undefined and unique shades of gray. Urban Wildlife will be celebrating the release of Strangers at the Secret Society on Friday, January 24th, get over to the show to see them at their best. – Benjamin Toledo

GUNK Opening for R. Stevie Moore at JB’s Jan. 22

Posted on:
I kept coming across the band name GUNK in DIY listings numerous times last year before any music or information had surfaced from the group, which obviously piqued my interest. The band feautures Josh Mackie (Your Children is Beautiful) and Nate Dionne (Glocca Morra, ex-Snowing), and you can check out their impressive debut LP Gradual Shove HERE that is available for purchase via local indie label Ranch Records. GUNK will also be hauling their fuzzy, punk-ish garage-indie rock up from Philly basements and out of its warehouses to Johnny Brenda’s stage this evening to open for eccentric grandfather of lo-fi recordings R. Stevie Moore as well as Jimmy Whispers, the new project from solo project from former Light Pollution frontman James Cicero. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Alexis V.

NYC Folk Duo Hannah & Maggie Debut New Single The Final Straw

Posted on:

With just over a month until the release of their upcoming album, ‘In The Company of Strangers,’ NYC Folk duo Hannah & Maggie release their brand new single ‘The Final Straw.’ Intricate guitar lines and spot on harmonies decorate the song which tumbles along perfectly capturing a tension between two lovers on the verge of a break up. The girls’ voices blend beautifully and effortlessly shift from soft and sweet to gravely and fierce to add further punch to powerful, weighty lyrics.

Keep an eye out for the album, out February 25th, and check out their live show on March 1st at Union Hall! – Bianca Mascheretti
