The Chapin Sisters tour with She & Him next summer

Posted on:

Nieces of ’70s folk legend Harry Chapin, The Chapin Sisters (Abigail and Lily Chapin) have set several Everly Brothers songs to new harmonies, and new personalities. Where once these tracks sounded sugar-coated, The Chapin Sisters have instead poured some bitters and molasses over these hits, and reconstructed them to hit some notes The Everly Brothers probably didn’t expect to hear when they first penned these tunes.

It looks like their experiment worked. Funding the record entirely through Kickstarter, the ladies are now set to take it on tour, supporting She & Him on the road next summer. See the sisters in the video for ‘Who’s Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet’ below, where they sound (and look, in a cold defying way) great. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Dead Leaf Echo supports The Ocean Blue at Bowery this Saturday (12.21)

Posted on:

After maintaining a relentless touring schedule in 2013 that saw them play hundreds of shows all across the country, Brooklyn’s Dead Leaf Echo close out the year in New York City this Saturday night (12.21) supporting 90’s dreampop legends The Ocean Blue at Bowery Ballroom (on the bill also NYC rockers Dead Heart Bloom). The release of DLE’s debut album “Thought & Language” was a long time in the making, but proved to be well worth the wait. Literary in both scope and vision, the sonic qualities accompanying themes of conception, birth, childhood and ultimately a "Kingmaker" (see video below) are enveloped in a shimmering quality. Bringing in legendary 4AD producer John Fryer to mix the tracks showed a serious level of commitment to the overall sound quality. The album is now being released on vinyl, and can be ordered via their website. – Dave Cromwell

Video Premier: The Smoking Flowers “A Bow and Nothing More”

Posted on:

The Deli Nashville is thrilled to premier this original Christmas song by The Smoking Flowers. Titled “A Bow and Nothing More,” it’s a swinging tune that wholeheartedly embraces 60’s camp. Featuring the ethereal Kim Collins as Sexy Housewife, Sexy Drummer, and Sexy Woman-Only-Wearing-a-Bow, it indentifies and fills the need for more innuendo in holiday music. The video was co-directed by the husband and wife duo, and filmmaker Davis Adams. It’s a fun mini-film, and black and white bits make it classy, despite the vignette ending with Scott Collins (‘Hipster Santa’) scrambling out of the frame in a dash for some Christmas nookie. This one goes out to all those who just can’t hear "Jingle Bell Rock" one more time. –Terra James-Jura

Artist to Watch: Bedouin

Posted on:

As her name implies, Bedouin is a citizen of the world. With no country to her name, she found the inspiration for her latest musical efforts right here in LA. Collaborating with producer Jake Blanton (The Killers, Father John Misty) on her self-titled debut EP due out January 7, the anonymous songstress cultivated a tapestry of influences that meld into a hypnotic and soulful offering. Her voice is enchanting, her songwriting filled with whimsy and intrigue. There’s a thread of longing throughout the EP, almost a distant, far away dreamy-ness, that intones her gypsy nature. Stream "The City" here and catch her live tonight at The Standard in Hollywood. – Jacqueline Caruso

Sonic Posse provides a resource for student musicians

Posted on:
There was Bassoon Club and the Society for Trombonists.

But what about rock and roll?

UMKC transfer student Hannah Copeland asked herself this question while combing the university’s Student Involvement website. She was looking for a group that supports the kind of music you wait in long lines for, cram yourself into basements for, and go out every week searching for like it’s your job. With no such organization—but undoubtedly a niche for one—Copeland and her friend Kevin Coon founded Sonic Posse: a UMKC student music collective.

Sonic Posse exists as a resource to unite the talents and passions of local musicians and fans at UMKC, as well as the KC community. The club plans monthly concerts and puts together compilation albums every semester. Sonic Posse continues to gain momentum by holding weekly meetings to plan concerts and discover up-and-coming talent.

At Sonic Posse’s very first concert on Friday, December 6, an attentive crowd huddled together at FOKL Center—partly because the DIY venue was literally freezing cold, but mostly because of the music.

UMKC music therapy student Tarissa Keating kicked off the show with eclectic renditions of acoustic pop songs. After her set, Keating beamed at the warm applause she received from playing her first ever “real show.” Singer/songwriters Max Griffith and Tornado Head (Joshua King) carried on the show with their own original music. Though the first three acts were acoustic soloists, each show was a refreshing reminder of just how diverse sounds can be depending on who holds the axe.

Making certain every minute was filled with quality music, K-ROO student radio DJs Laura Hopp and Brian Will spun vinyl between acts, the familiar vinyl crackle warmed the air. Closing the evening was post-rock band Riala. The members’ Conservatory background shined through with their talented use of instrumentation along with a spirited stage presence.

Sonic Posse meets every Monday to discuss its next monthly event. To gather more campus exposure, some concerts will be held at UMKC; others in various Kansas City venues. Copeland has made plans with City Ice Arts for an outdoor music festival in May 2014. For this event, Sonic Posse aims to create a lineup of popular KC bands and talented UMKC student bands. If you have any questions or suggestions about Sonic Posse, send them an email at sonicposse@gmail.com or catch them on their Facebook page

Congratulations to Vandella for Winning The Deli Magazine Artist of the Month Poll

Congratulations to the Americana-soul rock group, Vandella for winning The Deli Magazine San Francisco’s Artist of the Month Poll! Vandella worked particularly hard on promoting their nomination, and even made a youtube video to let their fans know they were the right band to choose to win this month’s poll! Not only did Vandella win because of their promotional creativity, but their mixture of Motown soul and homespun Americana style could coax anyone into supporting them. We wish them the best of luck on their future musical endeavors!

Crooked guitar rock from Brooklyn: LVL UP plays Silent Barn on 12.21

Posted on:

LVL UP is a combination of members of Sirs and Spook Houses, and deliver a natural blend between alternative rock and heart felt singing / songwriting. Juxtaposing melodic ballad-like material with some very tight heavy rhythms, they manage to maintain a tension that sounds like it could all come crashing down at any moment. Their sound truly resonates a 90’s era "crooked guitar pop-rock" vibe – think Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement. Nic Corbo’s delivery specifically reminds us of Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters, at times the similarities are uncanny. The LVL UP live shows tend to be raucous sing alongs that are bound to be a load of fun. Check them out at Silent Barn in Brooklyn this Saturday Dec. 21st with Julia Brown, Alex G, High Pop, Pill Friends, and Olive Drab. – Joey Fish
