A Million Billion Dying Suns – Strawberry EP
We may never achieve contact with aliens, let alone find out what they’re listening to; fortunately, thanks to A Million Billion Dying Suns, we can take a guess. Perhaps the matured lovechild of Animal Collective and The Flaming Lips, AMBDS delivers synthy beats and airy vocals in the form of a fresh EP. Reminiscent of a spacey sci-fi flick, the tension-building intro to Strawberry Letter 23 launches the listener into the milky way and out of their usual zone. The raging guitars wail on amidst a whirlwind of sound, twisting and twirling through a hurricane of good vibes. Plush is not only a perfect adjective for the third track listing, but also the title; with a rich beat that makes you want to dance and a sick guitar solo, you may feel as if you’re inside an 80’s discotheque rapidly orbiting around the sun. Wonderfully foreign yet blissfully cozy, AMBDS certainly transcends earthly limitations. – Kat Collins
New Music Video: “Outside” – Red Martina
Though Red Martina didn’t win our most recent Featured Artist(s) Poll, we are happy to give props to the hip-hop group, which is made up of Noesis (Philadelphia Slick), Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind (Jedi Mind Tricks), Ish Quintero (Quintero) and Hayley Cass, for waging such a hard-fought battle. Please check out their latest single, "Outside," which you can also find on their debut LP Intransit (Badtape Music), and music video below. Enjoy!

Big Snow Buffalo farewell party at Silent Barn tonight (12.03): Twin Sister, Leapling, Ava Luna, Celestial Shore, Zula
Tonight Silent Barn will host the first farewell party for Big Snow Buffalo Lodge, a small Bushwick DIY venue whose life was abruptly cut short this July by a freaky shooting accident involving co-owner Yoni David. The lineup is nothing short of breathtaking, with adorable electro pop Brooklynites Twin Sister, two bands previously featured on the cover of our mag (Ava Luna and Celestial Shore), and two very interesting up and comers we recently covered (Zula and Leapling). Empress of is DJing.
A second farewell party is scheduled for December 5th at Shea Stadium with a bunch of cool newer bands we’ll cover very soon.
Album Review: Rockoon by Noble Firs
For those with a hankering for island/psych/surf jams, direct your attention to Rockoon, the newest effort from The Noble Firs. According to front man Jeremiah Brunnhoelzle, these Portland based boys were formed due to a serendipitous mix of craigslist and “lots of Portland mingling.” After adding a new drummer Nic Kohagen (contributor to hip hop project, SMAK BANG) in July, the band was itching to release some new material. This combined with the opportunity to record with producer Nori Lockhart (of Cambrian Explosion) made for a promising release. The group describes their sound as “major key chill with a splash of surf”, but there seems to be more beneath the surface. The record boasts shimmering intricacies of guitar and drum work fastened tight like stained glass into quick-pulse rhythms. The first track, “Love’s For The Birds” successfully splices a subdued, pulsing verse with an epic, cascading crash of a chorus full of vocal and guitar harmonies that verge on post rock. “Boy in a Man Suit” features lots of nice, tight rhythmic interplay between guitars and bass with even a little percussion (kongas/bongos) break in the middle. The “surf” influence is most potent in “Feathered Feet”, a throwback romp of 60s surf rock/Beatles mash-up and “Lemming Long Jumps” which features nice guitar/vocal doubling and a mid-break into a surf-groove bridge. The Noble Firs are DIY at the moment, so support the sound and the movement by popping over to their bandcamp page and checking out their tunes! – Ted Jamison
Domino Kirke starts residency at Ace Hotel on 12.08
Domino Kirke has a lot on her plate these days. But with her imagination and endless spirit, the Brooklyn based singer/songwriter finds inspiration in her rich life for more imaginative work than we’ve heard from her yet. After the birth of her son Kirke took some time off, Domino became Williiamsburg’s hottest new doula, and has now come back to music with new EP ‘The Guard,’ revealing an inner calm and directness that can be both surprising and arresting.
The English/American transplant has done a lot in a very short time, but comes away from it all sounding more in touch with her form than ever before. And it doesn’t hurt that Jorge Elbrecht (Violens and Lansing-Dreiden) collaborated on the EP as well. Check out the title track below, and see her when she plays at her Ace Hotel residency on December (12/8, 12/15, 12/22 and 12/29). – Mike Levine @Goldnuggets)
We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best mellow songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
New Video: “She’s Your Baby” (Ween Cover) – The Lawsuits
We have a hypothesis that Bucks County peeps love Ween – particularly Doylestown folks; however, we are basing that on a bunch of our Doylestown friends. Well, helping to further move our hypothesis to a theory are Brian Dale Allen Strouse and Vanessa Winters of The Lawsuits (who once called Doylestown home before making their adoption of Philly official via the band’s Facebook and Twitter pages), and they’re recent performance of Ween’s "She’s Your Baby," off the LP White Pepper. The rendition was captured by Root Down in the Shadows for their Covers Club series, and this session was recorded at Break Neck Studios in Newtown, PA. The Lawsuits will be performing this Friday, December 6 at Kung Fu Necktie for the Levee Driver’s EP release show.
Clear Plastic Masks “Baby Come On”
Clear Plastic Masks have released this video for their first single “Baby Come On.” It’s a bluesy testament to the soul-deep gratification of the late night. They have a four-song EP with an album in the works to be released early 2014, and critics are already slobbering over them. The band first sprouted in the depths of Brooklyn, NY, and carries to Tennessee the haze of that one golden year at the start of the millennium when it was okay for your band’s name to start with “The-.” But Clear Plastic Masks go so far beyond garage rock, employing all necessary noise and feedback to get their point across. They have a messy righteousness that is shared by drunks on the stumble home: veering, sweaty, incoherent, but completely assured that their aim is true. They are currently on tour with the Alabama Shakes, with more dates to be added, so keep an eye out for a Nashville show. –Terra James-Jura
Twinterviews Session One: Papi Fimbres
In the debut session of the new web series, Twinterviews, hosts Colette and Meggyn sat down with one of the busiest drummers in Portland, Papi Fimbres, who you may recognize from one of the 21 bands he currently collaborates with (seriously). Probably best known for his work with experimental indie-rockers, Sun Angle, Papi reveals his early influences and more in what proves to be an enlightening interview. Watch the video below and keep your eyes out for the second session of Twinterviews in the future. – Benjamin Toledo
Mark Matos & Os Beaches and Harry and the Hitmen Play Amnesia – 12/29
SF based Portuguese, psychedelic folk band, Mark Matos & Os Beaches will be performing live at Amnesia on December 29th in San Francisco. This invigoratingly tripped out ensemble which includes former members of Brian Jonestown Massacre and Acid Mothers Gong will take the stage and share the bill with the equally creative Motown soul quintet, Harry & The Hitmen. This band puts their own psych folk spin on legendary Motown hits. This show is going to be nothing but a blast. We recommend you make it out to check out this awesome line up.
NYC electro-goths I’m In You release LP ‘Trust’ + video for ‘Call Me When You’re Drunk’
I’m in You is that missing link between post-punk and electo-disco that’ll slide nicely between your vinyl collections of Duran Duran and Joy Division, with an energy and class that could only be fueled by a band self-described as ‘yacht goth.’ The band’s third record, ‘Trust,’ is full of their trademark spare drum machines, and aloof vocals courtesy of Chris McHenry.
Popular track ‘Call Me When You’re Drunk,’ charts perhaps the most hellish evening spent late at the bar I’ve ever seen, if their dark dance video is to be believed. But our fave is ‘Tinnitus‘ (added to our playlist of great electronic songs by NYC bands) where McHenry sings of disbelief, while tackling a dangerously dissonant band of violins. Watch the video to ‘Call Me When You’re Drunk’ below, which includes some very special dance moves by Alison Clancy. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
