Psych NYC band on the rise: Baked plays Shea Stadium on 12.05

Posted on:

Baked’s sound is like second hand smoke lingering in the air – the good kind. The 4 track ‘S/T Cassette’ takes us to the days of back seat blazing with a chill stoner vibe that itches to chase Steve Malkmus as much as it teases the manic changes of Foxygen – or Syd Barret’s beautifully disconnected melodies. They give off a very comforting laid back vibe, giving the impression to understand themselves more than they know. Their music is an effortless experience, like that scent coming from your neighbors apartment late at night that you really don’t mind. See them live on 12.05 at Shea Stadium for the second Big Snow Buffalo Lodge farewell party with Porches, Krill, Lost Boy?, Lvlup and Bueno. – Joey Fish

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best psych songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

NYC World Pop singer Nasimiyu releases ‘dirt’ EP in January

Posted on:

Nasimiyu’s latest single ‘Raise Your Arrow (The Hunt)’ comes out swinging at the fences in a tireless groove pointed sharply at its kill. Taken from her upcoming EP ‘dirt’ to be released on January 24, the track shows off the singer’s huge range and bottomless well of whoops and hollers to keep you on your toes.

You may be afraid to find yourself in Nasimiyu’s huntman-like sights, but being in the direction of her voice is electrifying. Listen below to ‘Raise Your Arrow’ and find out why. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

New Track: “Passionate Kisses” (Journey Chapin Carpenter Cover) – Josh Jones

Posted on:

Univox‘s Josh Jones recorded a cover of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s "Passionate Kisses," except he changed almost all the lyrics and added some by Journey. Oh yeah…now it’s a homoerotic tale about a criminal who falls in love with the cop who puts him in jail. Enjoy!

Posted on:

After nearly a year of working on their first full-length release, local alt-punk group Blue Matches is set to drop their hefty 17-track album "Starting Over" on December 10th. Blue Matches invoke the raw energy of The Distillers and wrap it in an accessible pop blanket.  "Starting Over" ranges from upbeat pop-punk numbers like “Down and Out” to more laid-back tracks with string accompaniments, like “Tumbleweed.” You can catch Blue Matches at their upcoming album release show with Arkansas Elvis and The Simpletons at The Rutledge on December 13th! -Michael Perry

LA Font Record Release tonight at The Echo

Posted on:

A celebratory atmosphere will be tangible at The Echo tonight as local favorites, LA Font, will be officially releasing their sophomore full length along with a raucous cast of noisemakers. The band has been slowly teasing out songs from the new album for several months. The official video for the title track, "Diving Man" encapsulates the band’s straight forward, non-nonsense approach. Apparently the video is a 3-minute version of a larger mumble core film frontman Danny Bobbe and director David bores created together. Frontman Danny Bobbe is devoid of pretention and so the songs come across as such – sincere, vulnerable, and undeniably catchy. Head to The Echo tonight to catch the band in their element along with Spaceships, Washing Machines and Wax Children. ‘Diving Man’ is out now. – Jacqueline Caruso

NYC Record of the Month: Porches’ “Slow Dance in the Cosmos”

Posted on:

Porches‘ lead singer Ronnie Mystery may be pleading for some personal space when he sings "pay no attention while I’m getting spaced out" in ‘The Cosmos‘ (the closing track of the band’s recent LP "Slow Dance in the Cosmos") but we couldn’t disagree with him more. Having just listened one time through to the new record we are only just beginning to crack the beautifully intricate mythology behind this mysterious and multifaceted album. We are hoping the band will treat us with other similar releases for awhile, or we might never fully appreciate the number of sounds and visions they’re working with.

With ragers like ‘Skinny Trees’ packed next to breathless ballads like ‘Franklin the Flirt’ and the prom-ready ‘Intimate,’ this group keeps you guessing even while you find yourself jumping up and down. It’s folk whimsy with a rebel’s frustration and a yacht rocker’s heart. You might listen to the track ‘Xanny Bar’ and be convinced Ronny wanders into railroad boxcars to entertain hobos on his free time, then come back to ‘After Glow’ and be convinced he’s the second coming of Phil Collins. This record is a huge leap ahead for the band, and we are looking forward to hitching a ride up to New Paltz tonight to see them when they play at Oasis Cafe. If that’s too far for you, they have 3 shows scheduled in NYC in the near future (list here on the top right). Listen below to ‘Headsgiving.’ – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Who’da Funk It singer breaks out on her own

Posted on:

At just 17, Deja Carr has made a name for herself in the Western Massachusetts music scene as the frontwoman of Who’da Funk It. With the band taking somewhat of a breather after a successful 2013, Carr has taken on another ambitious project: her own solo work under the name Mal Devisa. After playing several smaller local shows, Carr will bring her signature stage presence and impressive pipes to the Parlor Room in Northampton on December 3, opening for Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. Look for her own creations plus possible covers of "Honey Honey" by Feist and Beyoncé’s "Deja Vu." – Jake Reed

New Track: “Exhale” – Has-Lo

Posted on:

It feels like a minute since we’ve heard new recordings from emcee/producer Has-Lo. Well, we are happy to share his latest stoner-friendly head bobber "Exhale." Has-Lo’s bars feel effortless and razor-sharp. The instrumentals are simply hypnotic, and were produced by Culture I.

Lapland’s new video for “Unwise”

Posted on:

In all likelyhood loosely inspired to 1999 cult horror movie "The Blair Witch Project" (but featuring a way sexier ‘witch’), Lapland‘s new video for single "Unwise" turned out very well for a DIY family experiment: the ‘witch’ isone man band Josh Mease’s wife Lauren, and the director is their friend James Kuhnert. The video was shot in a wooded area in Queens – we would have never guessed.
