Show Review: The Daily Howl at The Watt 12.1

Posted on:

Nashville pop group The Daily Howl closed out the Ugly-X-Mas Sweater Show at The High Watt last Sunday Night with an energized set full of pogo-bouncing and hip-snapping. Their take on cautious, “Button-Up-Rock” (as I like to call it), reminded me of an even more radio friendly version of Jet, and who knows, you might be hearing the title track off their latest EP "Revolver" at Titans’ kickoffs, instead of the Melbourne rockers. The Daily Howl has been causing some buzz around town lately and just had a short clip of “Revolver” on ABC’s “Nashville” on December 4th. Although I don’t buy into The Daily Howl’s self-proclaimed title as the “Revival of Nashville Garage Rock” (because how do you revive the living?), they do know how to have fun on stage and subsequently create a good time for everyone. -Michael Perry

The Intelligence plays Los Globos on 12.6

Posted on:

I can’t even begin to fully scratch the surface of The Intelligence. In their latest release Everybody’s Got It Easy But Me, listeners get a feel for how the album will sound, garage mixed with revival punk and 60’s psychedelic rock. The guitar strums last for days, tripping out every listener as the Casio piano enters stage left with its mellowed transitions into a lazy Sunday afternoon. Lars Finberg is a great musician, and is less than simple with his instruments, but his quirky perspectives brings back the lost art of trippy garage punk rock and feels like you’re listening to a throwback album circa 1986. The band can help you find peace in your week while getting down to their unique musicianship at least for a good 40 minutes. They’re a loud, backyard concert that never ends, and you kind of don’t want it to. – Kayla Hay

Fat Possum Announce Release Date for The Districts’ New EP

Posted on:
Fat Possum just announce that The Districts’ new self-titled EP will be released on January 28 (in North America and January 27 in Europe). Below is its first single, a remastered version of “Funeral Beds.” Our readers should already be familiar with the song since it originally appeared on the band’s 2012 LP Telephone and was featured in their viral in-studio performance video with our friends/collaborators HotBox Studios. “Lyla” and “Long Distance” from Telephone have also been remastered, and will be on the Fat Possum release alongside two brand new tracks, “Rocking Chair” and “Stay Open,” which were recorded at Waking Studio this past summer with producer Bill Moriarty. The band will be hitting the road this February/March with Austin’s White Denim, and are scheduled to make a stop in Philly on Thursday, February 27 at Union Transfer.

NYC bands on the rise: Haybaby plays Grand Victory tomorrow (12.06)

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s raggedy indie-rockers Haybaby are great for rocking out to, but their songs are also very catchy and tense at once, in a way that’s at times vaguely reminiscent of The Breeders or, depending on the song, Pavement. The lively trio offers a refreshing alternative yet punk/thrash sound, something that molds the techniques we’ve all heard before into something new and exciting. Leslie Hong’s adorable female vocals pair nicely with Zach & Sam’s counterparts. They just released a noteweorthy 4-track EP titled SUPERPRESENT in October, which you can listen to below via Bandcamp, and they’re set to play The Grand Victory on Friday 12.06 as part of a stacked lineup including Low Fat Getting High, Hunktronik & Jangula. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Myrrias Combines Forces at Ortlieb’s Dec. 5

Posted on:
Myrrias is a new all-female project consisting of Mikele Edwards (Arc In Round) on lead vocals and keys, April Harkanson (The Downtown Club) on guitar and vocals, Emily Robb (Lantern) on bass, and Casey Bell (Break It Up) on drums. At The Deli, we’re admirers of all their bands so the combining of these forces is certainly welcomed. Unfortunately, there are no recordings of them online yet so you’ll just have to go to Ortlieb’s tonight where they’ll be headlining and hear for yourselves. How would they describe themselves? “Light as a feather, stiff as a board.” Ortlieb’s Lounge, 847 N. 3rd St., 9pm, $7, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Storyman releases debut album ‘This Time Around’ + plays Webster Hall tomorrow (12.06)

Posted on:

When we heard The Guggenheim Grotto changed their name to Storyman, we wasn’t expecting much more than that, a new set of clothes on a well-worn groove. But the Brooklyn-by-Ireland alt pop group has done far more than updating monikers. The songwriting duo of Kevin May and Mick Lynch has expanded from their coffeehouse roots to include a huge landscape filled with abstract imagery and moving lyrics. It’s quite a stylistic shift, and is captured well by producer Chris Kuffner for the band’s just-released debut ‘This Time Around.’ Check out the video for first single ‘Coming Home’ below to see the duo decorate the city with word bubbles held up by a cast of tourists and oddities you’ll only find in New York. See Storyman Live tomorrow (12.06 at Webster Hall. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

The EP was recorded, mixed and masterd by Will Yip at Studio 4. Cop Problem will be performing this Sunday, December 8 at Kung Fu Necktie.
