From The Deli NYC’s submissions: Inner Outlaws

Posted on:

With something reminiscent of Destroyer’s uncanny ability to reveal hidden meanings in otherwise placid seeming events, there’s more than meets the eye in Brooklynites Inner Outlaws‘ self-titled EP – the third they release in 2013. Like in the record’s cover, everything appears well from the surface; The band’s practically begging you to jump in… but watch out. There’s an underlying sinister tone here in tracks like ‘Bodies of Water’ that might make you think twice before taking a dip yourself. And that’s all the reason to listen to all 9 minutes of vaguely Pink Floydian (circa 1975) track ‘Bodies of Water’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Guy Fox Releases New Single – The City Line

Posted on:

San Francisco based alternative indie rock band, Guy Fox has released a new single entitled, The City Line. This quietly eerie, reverbed anti ballad is an ode to city living. The City Line breaks down with a funk style bass line and intricate atmosphere changes that brings a gritty and sensual feel to this well produced, dense song. This single, released on December 5th is a great segway to what Guy Fox will be bringing in the future. We’re excited to hear this new track and look forward to hearing new music, from this eclectically funky rock ensemble. –je

Ryley Walker @ Saki

Posted on:

The name Ryley Walker is poised to become one of the more talked about names in Chicago. He just released his debut 12" EP via Tompkins Square and the first video, "The West Wind", had a major premier. Walker is a ’70’s throwback focusing on psych-folk. Walker is just 24 but has spent several years in and around the city’s experimental noise scene. His transition to folk sounds has been smooth, but you can still find traces of his former passions.

Walker full-length debut is due out in April 2014 also through Tompkins Square.

You can catch Ryley Walker at Saki with Pillars & Tongues on Friday, December 13th.

Video: Levels “Regrets”

Posted on:

Levels sport a frustratingly Google-unfirendly name, so let me shine a light on their background – the trio of Florida residents Cody Wilson, Mikey Rollingchild, and Roxor Evensen have been longtime friends ever since they met 15 years ago, and through thick and thin they finally stopped at California and made it their home. The sludge-pop enthusiasts like to bridge a gap between noise and melody, employing jerky guitars and vibrant choruses that incite listeners to stand up and shout. Check out the payfully sinister promo cut for their song "Regrets", which accentuates their pop tendencies in both their tasteful riffs and call-and-response vocals. – Juan Rodríguez

“Nothing Works” for Mike Bell & The Movies at The Boot & Saddle Dec. 10

Posted on:

Mike Bell & the Movies are currently on tour with Amherst’s Pachangacha in support of their latest LP Nothing Works. As a songwriter, Bell wears his heart on his sleeve; however, his tunes don’t come off like just another sadsack singer-songwriter but rather a self-deprecating protagonist who can find humor in his flawed life. Backed by his band The Movies, who consists of ex-members from Algernon Cadwallader, Dangerous Ponies and Bandname, the power-pop quartet simply want you to sing-along and have a good time at their expense. They’ll also be joined this evening at the Boot & Saddle by Philly indie rockers Kite Party and lo-fi, bedroom indie popsters Manors. The Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8:30pm, $7, 21+ – H.M. Review: Mute Message – 5th Dimension Sessions

Posted on:

When you think of a cello, ambient experimental music may not be the first thing that comes to mind; but after a listen to vocalist, Jordannah Elizabeth and cellist Kate Porter’s new collaboration, your ears will thank you for the experience. This bi coastal, Baltimore/San Franisco based duo, has created a four-song project that features a striking range of themes, all of which sound like they could be components of a soundtrack to a new-age historical epic. The longest track at 6 minutes and 28 seconds, "You Won’t Regret It," begins with a somber cello solo that slowly builds and gains power, soon to come back down and end with an ethereal two minute extended decrescendo. "What You’re Hiding" opens with an exciting hook that conjures up images of a sly, calculated tango that is quickly joined by layers of an equally beautiful, melancholic voice that adds a silvery airiness. The final product without a doubt piques interest, spurs inspiration and offers a view into perhaps the future of experimental music. – Kat Collins

NYC Artists on the rise: Misterwives, live at Rough Trade on 01.07

Posted on:

I kinda wish I could be in Misterwives. Where other groups take themselves a bit too seriously, these guys obviously know how to have fun, even when living off PB&J alone on tour (or so says lead singer Mandy Lee). They had one of the most talked about shows during CMJ, and haven’t even released their debut yet! With an electro-disco backdrop set against Lee’s roof-raising vocals, this is not a band that shies away from the spotlight. So I’m looking forward to listening to their EP ‘Reflections’ when it comes out early next year. See them when they play Rough Trade NYC on Jan 7 at the album release party, and listen to their single "Twisted Tongue" below, from the upcoming EP. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Water Knot unveils new video, lands song on Stallone’s ‘Homefront’

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s ambitious contemporary alt rockers Water Knot bring you their bluesy, piercing guitar stabs, tense power chords and rock’n’roll antics in this sexually-charged video for the song “Lust" (below), off of their debut EP titled ‘Sometimes.’  The band just released the 5-track EP in November and the video was premiered on MTV Europe earlier this month. The song is also featured in the new Sylvester Stallone movie ‘Homefront,’ which premiered on Thanksgiving. Although there doesn’t appear to be any tour dates scheduled, keep an eye on these guys for more to come! – Michael Haskoor(@Tweetskoor)
