Concert Review: Two Gallants at The Sweetwater Music Hall

Posted on:

On a rainy Friday night in Mill Valley a few hundred soggy concertgoers packed into the Sweetwater Music Hall for a muggy but invigorating evening with Two Gallants. After a fiery opening set from the Once and Future Band, the sold out club welcomed the freaky americana-rock duo and their raw mix of country-blues and grungy rock and roll to the Marin suburb for their first Bay Area show in nearly four months.

From the opening moments of the set, it was striking just how much sound the band got out of only two instruments. Frontman Adam Steven’s distorted fingerpicked guitar and Tyson Vogel’s punk-virtuoso drumming interlocked seamlessly, enveloping the dance floor and transfixing the crowd. As the band kicked into their signature anthem “Steady Rollin,” the audience inched closer to the stage, swaying and singing along with Steven’s gravelly vagabond vocals.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the night came as Stevens grabbed an acoustic guitar and harmonica while Vogel hopped off the kit to perform “Broken Eyes,” a plaintive folk ballad whose delicate harmonies revealed the intense chemistry between these two lifelong band mates. To close out the show the duo ripped through the cathartic “Nothing to You,” a manic waltz that gave everyone one last chance to sing along before finishing their beers, finding their coats and wandering out into the blustery winter night. –Ethan Varian

Review – Lisa Marshall – Stay Right Here

Posted on:

We met at a networking meeting for women in music where I received a stack of CDs from hopefuls, but from the moment I pressed play on my kitchen stereo Lisa Marshall stood out. The needle in the haystack of talent, in a scene recently overcome by soulful wannabes, this voice is genuine and true. Her lyrics hit home. Her guitar flows freely. Stay Right Here presents a force to be reckoned with. –Written by Charise Sowells

New Music Video: “Impregnable” – Reef The Lost Cauze

Posted on:

Here’s a new, lengthy music video from hip-hop veteran Reef The Lost Cauze for the track "Impregnable," which will appear on his upcoming release The High Life 2013, due out December 17 via iTunes. If you happen to follow him on Twitter, then you probably know about his love weed (which probably had an influence on the album’s title) and his love for his son. Well, the latter is definitely apparent from this footage that brings together images of a younger Reef and the realities of his life today wrapped up in a Griswold-type adventure. The video was directed by Sick Six and Erik Tha Viking (Sleep-E). (BTW: We love Munchos too! :o)

Falside chills out on “Platypus”

Posted on:

As EDM and trap continue to infiltrate popular hip-hop, Falside offers a nice alternative. On his latest beat tape, “Platypus,” the self-proclaimed “beatsmith” crafts jazzy, chilled out grooves that rarely reach the two-minute mark. It’s the perfect soundtrack to your next smoke session – or to keep you calm when you’re stuck in traffic on the way to that big job interview. Check out standout track “Good Grief” and download the EP for free on Bandcamp now – Jake Reed

Sharkmuffin celebrates release of “1097” EP at Shea Stadium tonight (12.11)

Posted on:

Hopefully one day will come when we won’t act surprised when we find an all-female band that truly rocks. We apologize profusely for that instinct just in case, and proceed to introduce you to Sharkmuffin, a Brooklyn female trio that plays garage-rock propelleded by some seriously high octane sonic fuel. The band will be celebrating the release of new EP "1097" at Shea Stadium tonight (12.11), a show that will in all likelyhood generate a lot of mosh-generated heat, which can’t be bad considering these days’ temperatures. Check out "Foul Play" below, and ‘meet’ the ladies in the band’s recent video for "Mermaid Sex Slave" here.

NYC Artists on the rise: Glass Gang plays Glasslands on Friday the 13th

Posted on:

If you are looking for ways to spend an unsettling Friday the 13th, Glasslands gives you the perfect opportunity with a show with Brooklyn’s Glass Gang that night. The electronic band’s repertoire is all pretty dark and tense, but new track "Sell It All" (streaming) gets downright into disturbing territory, with sped up ghostly sampled voices that create bizarrely nightmarish melodies, on top of a macabre, plodding arrangement, dominated by suicidal vocals, droney synths and snappy drum machines. There’s enough crazyness here to blow up anybody’s mind – we dig!

New True Gold Album Available for Streaming & Free Download

Posted on:

After releasing two attention-catching singles, "Undulate" and "Final Fantasies," it has been quite some time since we’ve heard any new material from shoegaze-y psych rockers True Gold. There were talks of a release via Parts Philly (which may still be happening on vinyl or cassette); however, earlier this week, the band posted an eight-song self-titled album to their Bandcamp page. You can listen to the record in its entirety below as well as download it for free. Enjoy!

The Dead Towns “Permanent Midnight”

Posted on:

If you ever have to ask yourself whether or not you should stay for the rest of the show, the best practice is to just. Stay. The cat is not going to starve, your problems will not be solved by returning to your hovel half an hour earlier. Really, if your cat was worth a rip, it would figure out how to solve them for you.

Those 30 minutes are better spent seeing The Dead Towns for the first time at Exit/In last Sunday, 12/8. Taking the stage after Georgia boys Silver Palms, and the always entertaining Them Vibes, The Dead Town’s set was sharp and bouncy, and played like a mixtape dedicated to every skate punk bands in California in 1982. Their self-titled summer release offers a slight departure from what I witnessed, leaning closer to Brandon Flowers than Jello Biafra. Its still a slick collection of tunes; "Permanent Midnight" is loaded with the same personality that won me over at Exit/In.  Here’s hopes that 2014 is a good year for these boys.  -Terra James-Jura
