Steelism, “The Intoxicating Sounds of Pedal Steel and Guitar”

Posted on:

Steelism’s 7’ single "The Intoxicating Sounds of Pedalsteel and Guitar" features their two tracks “9 to 5 Jive” and “Lewis & Clark.” If you haven’t gotten the word on Steelism yet, they are composed of Jeremy Fetzer and Spencer Cullum Jr., who both back some of Nashville’s forefront artists, like Caitlin Rose and Andrew Combs. Steelism takes the energy of Allman Brothers licks and throws a western swing onto it with the pedal steel guitar. “9 to 5 Jive” is a lively jingle that’s as catchy as a commercial, while “Lewis & Clark” stays laid back, embracing that slow beat that conjures thoughts of wooden doors swinging in the wind and cloudy whiskey. -Michael Perry

Scavenger Hunt play the Lyric Theater 12.17

"Lost" couldn’t be a more apropros title for musical soulmates Scavenger Hunt, the confident new single by a duo of non-LA natives who moved to the city and found each other by way of happenstance. It all started when multi-instrumentalist Dan Mufson moved from Philadelphia in search of a luminous set of pipes, and he finally struck good fortune when he first heard trained jazz/folk singer Jill Lamoreux. He couldn’t pass the opportunity, so called her up, invited her to his studio and well, the rest is history. Theirs is a meeting a two like minds, who opted to take the electro-pop route with a pulsing pop anthem laced with scorching synth lines and effervescent call-and-response vocals. Have a listen to "Lost" below, and check them out tomorrow night at the Lyric Theater.

Felix Da Housecat’s Chicago Blakkout

Posted on:

Felix Da Housecat continue to be the man of many phases. He seems to always be on the pulse of dance music and is able to blend his own brand and style into the current sounds while remaining the constant historian. His latest project blends current and classic EDM with his surprising sense of humor. Chicago Blakkout is a new weekly podcast from Felix. Who better than Felix to create a weekly showcase for the best in EDM.

Felix is also working on his 13th album, with Nile Rodgers and other legends, coming in early 2014. My favorite Felix track will always be "Silver Screen Shower Scene" from his 2002 album Kittenz & Thee Glitz.

The Younger Lovers Release Sugar in My Pocket + Play The Night Light in Oakland TONIGHT

Posted on:

The super talented bubblegum pop group, The Younger Lovers, has recently released its latest album, Sugar in My Pocket on Southpaw Records. As a project of Oakland garage rock stalwart, Brontez Purnell, the band mixes lo-fi vintage style riffs with ’60s pop flair. The album is short and sweet, cramming in 12 songs in just over 20 minutes. The Younger Lovers use vocals that blur the line between poetry and banter, similar to Television Personalities with simplistic instrumentals to support this experimental vocal vibe. They have certainly polished their sound to near perfection within their last three albums. We’re very into this new release!

Sugar in My Pocket covers themes of love, heartbreak and existential crisis all in a short period of time. Some tracks that stand out are: Hey Now, The Man From Orange, the cleverly titled I Can’t (Kim) Deal With It and the last song on the album, My Tears Are Wasted (So Am I). Even as some of the song’s subject matter can appear bleak, Purnell maintains his popcentric composure throughout it all.

Screw Your Workweek w/Radiator Hospital at Golden Tea House Dec. 16

West Philly via Michigan recording artist Sam Cook-Parrott, a.k.a. Radiator Hospital, hasn’t really been living in Philly all that long, but he has managed to demonstrate to a growing number of listeners that he is a unique songwriter that shouldn’t be ignored. With poetic diction, upbeat, brain-burrowing melodies, and a distinct vocal styling that bleeds earnestness, I continue to listen in awe as he churns out release after release of songs that simply touch the heart and charm the senses. And the fact that all this is done holding true to his unpretentious DIY/punk ethos, it’s no wonder why we love him so much here at The Deli. Sam recently booked his bus tickets to head out on tour throughout most of next month before making a stop home for a rad show on Sunday, January 26 at the First Unitarian Church with Waxahatchee, All Dogs, Cayetana and Heavy Bangs. So if you really don’t want to wait until next year to see him perform live, then screw the rest of your workweek and make a trip out to the Golden Tea House tonight. It’ll totally be worth it. Album Review: Live in the Map Room by Three for Silver

Posted on:

Three For Silver has the wonderful ability to transport you through time and space to the beautiful warm simplicity of a bygone era, but once you’re there the simplicity stops and the enticing melodies and vocals begin. Three For Silver’s latest EP, “Live in the Map Room” is a hypnotic adventure of rustic storytelling told by a sultry, mysterious voice that quite frankly will leave you wanting, nay needing more. Tension in the songs waxes and wanes under a slew of instruments that take you out of the everyday mundane and into a black and white dream reminiscent of San Francisco in the 1920’s. I was particularly smitten with a track by the name of “Light in the Shade”. The intro is wonderfully serene and unique leading into a song that focuses on melody and elegantly strong vocals. Three For Silver draws on time-honored traditions while turning out a beautifully unique sound. Frills are put to bed and musicianship takes center stage on “Live in the Map Room”. Make sure to check these guys out live and pick up a copy of the new EP. – Cory Huennekens
